Sep 8, 2010I have a stock Macbook Pro 17in i5 laptop. I just got a new hard drive. I just did a time machine backup (to an external hard drive) of everything on my computer before i switch out the old drive to a new SSD OWC...Is this enough of a back up to where once i get the new SSD drive in i simply go to the time machine and it will put everything back the way i had it on the old hard drive correct? Or is there another step i need to take to make sure i transfer all of my data safely. I cant find my parallels product key nor my Microsoft word product key so i was wondering is this going to be an issue on the new hard drive? will the computer ask for the keys or since i backed everything up in time machine will it come back like normal.

Sep 7, 2014My trusty 6 year old mac book crashed. Took it to apple, they couldn't recover. Purchased new 15 mac book pro with 1TB. drive. Removed my HD from the old mac book and trying to transfer files via sata cable to USB directly to my new mac. Been successful with lots of files. Problem is, new mac shows old file icons from Applications, library, users, etc. but not contents. I tried copying entire hard drive... Wont work.
Then went into users, from my main folder with most of my saved stuff. The largest two folders I want to recover is the Documents folder and the Images folder. I cant open and see the files inside because for over 24 hours now it has been showing "Preparing to copy files". When I went to the images folder after about 6 hours it went from preparing, to copying with estimated time of 6 days to complete. If I could see the contents in the folders, I could simply just transfer the main Items needed?

I mean, the HD won't have an OS at all, so do I just insert my install disks, boot off them, and then install OSX on the new HD? Or will the computer boot up all? I will transfer everything over from my USD backup drive- yes, I know that will take more than a little while... (coincidentally, the Seagate Barracuda is LOUD). I'm only asking because the place where I want to get the replacement itself done charges like 30 bucks to do it, but ONLY for the physical replacement and no data transfer. If I try to drag and drop from my Mac drive to the folder of my external hard drive I keep getting this message: 'The operation can?t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0).' I tried to use a UNIX command with the Terminal $mv file.xxx /Volumes/HardDrive/ at first it seemed to work, but after a while I receive this message from the Terminal: 'File too large' I am now frustrated... I need to save this large file for backup purposes and my external hard drive is not big enough to be used for Time Machine (it has 80GB out of 160 of space left)

Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

Apr 26, 2008I have a USB 2.0 hard drive that I have been using to back up movie files. It has let me transfer files from my Macbook Pro HD to it hundreds of times without any problems.
I have this .mkv file that keeps giving me an error when I try to transfer it to my external. I get "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code 0)".
I have transferred plenty of .mkv files to my external with no problems. All other files work fine when I transfer them. It will let me move my .mkv file around my Macbook Pro's internal hard drive but it won't let me transfer it to the external.

May 18, 2009I'm new to Mac so I'm sure its user error.
I recently bought a Macbook and I have a external USB hard drive that is formatted NTFS. I copied all of the files off of external HD and pasted them on my Macbook. I slicked the external hard drive and formatted it as FAT32 so I could read & write on both a PC and Mac if I need.
Anyways, once the external hard drive was formatted I tried moving all of the files back to the external but I keep getting and error code once I paste the files on the external drive. It says: "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. Error code 0"
Now I'm not sure if the files are locked or what but I need help. I want to move them back to the external drive. It actually copies a few files to the external but nowhere near what all I need. They are just some .doc files that are on there

Dec 28, 2009I have recently made the plunge into mac kingdom and very pleased so far.
I am going through the pain staking task of transferring music, photos etc.. from my windows laptop to my new macbook pro.
I started off by setting up file sharing and copying files but it is taking absolutely ages.
Ideally I would like to use my 500gb mybook external hard drive but given an experience I just had when putting a memory stick in my mac straight after loading it up from my pc am I likely to lose all my current external hard drive data?
Complete ball ache if thats the case as all my films are on there and burning it all to DVD would take forever.

But now I cannot get iphoto or imovie back onto my computer. It says I cannot open it because it is a time machine back up. Jun 18, 2010I just bought a 2TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro drive. And I'm passing data (mostly video) onto it from a WD MyBook drive. Both use the Journaled HSF format. I'm on a MacBook Pro (10.5.8).
Problem? Every so often I get a message saying "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data......could not be read or written." And once this happens, the transfer falls into some limbo land � it won't copy any more but i can't get rid of the "copy" window showing the halted progress. I actually have to reboot just to begin the transferring process with another folder.
So what goes? In the last case, it was some JPG file that appeared to stop the action, usually it's some kind of video file. But I can't find any rhyme or reason to why this occurs, nor can I find any distinguishing characteristic of the offending files.

May 14, 2012I had mounted my drive to a G5 tower and it was severely frozen and would not let me shut down. I forced the computer off while the drive was still running and now when I try to mount it it, every computer tells me that the drive I inserted is not readable, and it gives me the option to initialize, ignore, or eject. I don't want to lose any of that data, is there anyone that knows how to recover these files?

Sep 4, 2009So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.

Aug 17, 2009Macbook pro 13' running 10.5.8 has intermittent issues with usb 2.0 mass storage drives but not jump drives. Here is the issue, my gf just got a brand new mac book pro 13'. This is great for her no more asking to use my unibody macbook. She plugs in the drive I have used for a very long time with my mac my pac etc. with not a hint of issue. The drive shows up copy's stuff off ok. However when it came time to return the data back to the drive it gets about 10% through and just hangs. Here is what I have done. I first thought ok might need a reboot. Then I went with the ok I will check her disk for issues. This is a 3 day old mac book by the way. I found random permissions errors with quick time which has never been run. After the fix the issue goes away for that boot.
The issues seems to come back after a re-boot or so. I go ok enough of this I format the mac with the system disk, then I update to the latest updates from apple. Plug in the drive and still having issues. Run the permissions repair same issues exactly format to format. I have also run the deep test off the system disk the machine checks out through that so I have ruled out ram on her system as a possible culprit. I am at a loss on this machine. I have gone so far as to format the external drive replace the data from my network server and try that. Still no luck. On my box there is no issue it time machines great it copy's data like a usb 2.0 drive should.
OS X :: Cannot See Files On External Hard Drive (Data Disappeared)
Sep 21, 2010I am trying to use my hard drive I have had for a couple years to back up some files on my computer, but the data I had stored on there already has disappeared. I previously had the hard drive connected to the Time Machine application, but have not used it in over a year when I received an error message trying to backup my computer using that application.
I know the data I already had on there is still on the hard drive because nearly half of the space on the drive is used up, but when I plug the hard drive in to my computer and open it there are no files to be found. I want to back up the current files on my computer, but I don't want to risk losing what I already had on the hard drive, so is there any way I can find and access the old files again?
I'll include my hardware information on here in case that helps to find a solution:
