View 2 RepliesThe idea for this quick GUIDE was thought up in this thread by kingjr3. Like the networking thread the idea of this is to have a quick point of reference for those common questions. How to Zap PRAM Zapping PRAM is simple, just reboot your Mac and hold down "Command(the Apple key)+Option(the Alt key)+P+R" while it is booting, when you hear the startup sound for the seond time the operation is complete, and you can release the key combination. Now just let your Mac boot as normal. How to Repair Permissions
- Navigte to "Applications > Utilities", and open up "Disk Utility".
- Select the volume where your OS resides, and hit the "Repair Disk Permissions" button.
If you are comfortable with using the Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app), you can also enter this command to run repair permissions - "sudo diskutil repairpermissions /" (without the quotes), just enter your password when prompted. How to run FSCK
- Restart your Mac holding down "Command(the Apple key)+S" key to enter 'Single user mode'.
- Type "fsck -f", and hit return.
- Once complete type "reboot" and hit return to reboot you Mac back in to OS X as normal.
If there is anything that you think is wrong here, or you think I have missed any vital steps out, please post and let me know so that I can ammend this.
Is there a way to get fsck to recognize a 200gig internal on the slave bus?
It seems that fsck only recognizes the startup drive.
Stellar Phoenix shows all the files are there but I cannot mount the drive through Disk Utility and I can't afford $99 right now.
im running 10.6.2 and was wondering if and how is it possible to remove bad pending sectors.
View 2 Replies View Relateddid anyone else notice that if you boot the SL disc from the DVD and go into disk utility, there is an option to Erase and Zero out sectors?
I'm just wondering if this solves the performance degradation issue of SSD's over time. Has anyone tried it and benchmarked the results before/after?
In theory it seems like it would work (albeit at the penalty of losing all data on the SSD).
Is there a way to check my hard disk for bad sectors? I dropped my MacBook off a 2nd floor balcony onto grass and I don't want to get a nasty surprise sometime in the future when it tries to write to a bad sector.
Please don't say fsck because there's nothing wrong with the file system because I dropped it when it was off.
I use Paragon NTFS to access a firewire/USB2 1TB drive. I recently noticed that some files on it, videos', won't copy to another drive. Using ViSTA and Firewire(Boot Camped) the Vista OS says the disk is unreadable, but the Mac OSX(10.5) just hangs after so many seconds. I've identified 9 large video files I really want back, what do you guys suggest for file recovery? I have Vista Ultimate 64bit and OSX 10.5

My ibookG4 won't boot past the blue screen. I have run fsck several times in single user because it won't boot in safe mode. Every time it comes back **** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED **** and never that the volume is ok. This blue screen problem occurred after trying to hook up a wireless router and changing settings in airport. If anyone knows how I can fix this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI want to upgrade one of the two 500GB HDD I currently have in my MBP 5,3 with a 1TB one. Given that I had good experience with WD, I am looking at their offerings. While their standard WD10TEVT is hardly available around here and if it's much more expensive (for what ever reason), I am interested in the WD10TPVT. Now that HDD has the new Advanced Formatting with 4k sectors which seems to be only a problem for WinXP. But could any Mac user share its experience with that HDD? Is it gonna work the same with Time Machine, backups, file transfer between disks or can issues occur when files are exchanged/transferred between disks with different sector sizes? Only want to upgrade one of my HDDs for now, so is there any preferable setup (in terms of which HDD to have the OS and which the files)?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my MBP internal hard drive to a Samsung 1TB and it crashed for the 2nd time (will never buy another Samsung). So this time, I purchased a WD and migrated my system to the new drive sucessfully. I just wanted to see if anyone knew if the migrate function simply copies files or if it copys sectors of the hard drive. Basically I just want to know if Mac Migrate will copy the crap from the Samsung drive that might cause my new WD to act up - or if that's possible?

I have a Mac Pro with several raid array and single drives attached (1x Wiebetech RTX600 Raid 5 through SCSI; 1x CalDigit HDElement Raid 5 through miniSAS; 4x internal drives).Unfortunately, due to various reasons (electricity outtage and software crashes), I'm experiencing system crashes and need to hard re-start the system. Upon restart, I am able to boot back into Mac OS X, but sometimes one, or both of the raid arrays will not mount. However, after a period of 0.5 - 2 hours, the array would magically re-appear again. Sometimes this might even happen to internal drives that I had mounted inside the chassis of the Mac Pro.

Since it is broadly acknowledged that there are no viruses for Mac (at this time) so what then is iAntivirus looking for when performing a scan?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was browsing the net for a bit of info and I clicked on a link - all above board I am just searching for info on an old friend.a small window appeared from a site called antivirus.net (or something like that) saying I was in need of software or a scan or something. I clicked CANCEL and found myself on a site "mg7a.info" that looked like a Windows desktop with a scan running (this listed in my history as "my computer online scan").

However, it was the virus scan mode for a PC, complete with all the PC icons and even box. I clicked out of it, because I didn't want to chance opening anything bad. I did some research, and everything I found said there shouldn't be any viruses for macs. I just want to be extra safe, is there anything I can do to check for viruses?

I have 13" MacBookPro running 10.6.1 with 4 G Ram. My HP Photosmart C4500 All-In-One will print but will not scan. I have unplugged the USB cable and uninstalled and reinstalled the driver to no avail. I have tried to scan from both the unit itself and the scan software on my laptop. I get messages like "an unknown error occurred, or "can't find scanner". When you look in the 4500s window it appears to be scanning but nothing happens. Any ideas? It seems to have stumped HP help so far!
