When i try to backup data or transfer large amounts of data, like 40gb or more, between drives, the process just stops without warning or explanation. It dowsn't matter when backup i use, Time Machine or WD Smartware.

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I had to get a new hard drive put into my macbook pro because it was failing. So, I moved all my data onto an external hard drive so I would not lose anything. But now I cannot get iphoto or imovie back onto my computer. It says I cannot open it because it is a time machine back up. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have used the disk for a number of years - all appeared to work fine - I am now backing up my data and only get Very slow transfer speed using firewire 800 - 2 hrs to transfer 1.36 Gb. Disk is connected to a Dual 1.8 Ghz Power PC G5 with firewire 800 - another d2 disk is connected to it with firewire 400 and I have just connected a Maxtor disk using firewire 400 to that. I have tried Updated the firmware (it did require it), tested the device alone on both 800 and 400 connections both slow. Restarted everything and used disk repair to check and repair the disks - repaired permissions on the startup disk.
Connected all the devices together again | LaCie 800 - LaCie 400 - and Maxtor 400. It sends data to all the other devices fast (~ 3 min for 1.6 Gb) through the LaCie 800 disk connection!, but does not send data to the LaCie 800 fast at all. Tested the other devices alone as well - they are all fast. Have also performed a TechTool Pro Ver 4 test on the the disk (Disk type ST325082 3A 232.89 Gb LaCie d2 External LUN0 revision 3.03) Passed the surface scan, disk controller and read write tests. Is the disk failing?

My internal 1TB hard drive on my iMac is dead and I don't have the money to replace it at the moment. I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine Backups? It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with Time Machine only on it? Â

I'm getting a new macbook. Currently I use time machine as a backup tool and was wondering if I should use it to transfer all my data to the new mac. One benefit of a new harddrive is the fresh install without all the junk that has built up over the years right? First, the drive kept triggering a "your external device may have been disconnected improperly" message. That despite repeated erasing of the disc and restarting of the set up a Time Machine backup usinig this 500GB USB2 drive with its own power supply. Finally, I placed the drive on its fronot panel and it stopped disconnecting. Then, it started the backup. It is now 9:30 in the morning. I started this backup at 9:30 last night. so far it has managed to accomplish 23.79 GB of a 64.45 GB back up.

I noticed that TIme Machine had stopped backing up, so I looked to see what was happening and I was getting an error saying that the external hard drive I am using for my back up was having problems (sorry I can't remember the specifics right now) and that I needed to fix the drive or possibly erase and reformat the drive. So I reformatted the drive and started a new backup onto the drive. I'm not sure if that backup completed and now I don't see the external hard drive on my desktop. I've made sure all cables are attached and have unplugged and replugged them in but I still don't see the drive.Â

I am transferring my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and it is agonizingly slow. Â
I am attempting to make room on our iMac so am moving our 193 GB iPhoto library to our Seagate 2TB external hard drive. The drive is brand new AND is formated properly as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but the current copy estimate is for it be completed in over 80 hours. I dont beleive the drive is broken as data is continuing to be transferred and not completely hung up. Â
When I transfer other folders/files the process is much much faster. Problem only seems to be with iPhoto library that I have found. Â

I've had an external 1.5TB MyBook for around five years now and recently decided to backup/replace it with a 2.0TB MyBook. However I'm having a lot of trouble finding a simple, painless way to copy all my files from one to the other. The hard drive is simply an external host for my iTunes library, which contains nearly 140,000 files. Initially I tried copying the entirety of my Music folder over, but for some reason it hit a hang at 96.58GB/947.06GB and has never progressed. I then attempted to do smaller transfers and got about 1/4 of the way through my library doing so, but I've experienced more hangs along the way.
Can't cancel the copy operation once they occur, so they just sit there on my screen. I attempted to restart my computer but Finder won't allow me to shut down without first canceling the copy processes. All of the guides I have found on the internet, including the Apple website, seem to indicate that this is the only way to do things, which is beginning to really frustrate me since it also seems to be a method that doesn't work very well; in fact, it seems to succeed mostly by random chance. Is there something I could do to ensure this doesn't keep happening, preferably so that I could go back to my original idea of copying the entire folder over at once?

Just recently I decided to format my Western Digital 1TB external HD from FAT32 to NTFS, due to NTFS having capabilities to transfer single files bigger than 4GB. So before formatting it, I transferred all the data onto my MacBook Pro and then did the full NTFS format of the external HD.
Now the problem is I CANNOT transfer the data back onto my external hard drive because apparently Mac OS can only read the NTFS files and not write on there.
I do not wish to re-format my external HD back to FAT32, therefore I'd like to ask you guys whether something could be done about this? (Btw, I've seen some site like the NTFS-3G site but I'm not sure if that applies to me and how to use it anyway.) How could I transfer data back and forth from the NTFS external HD to Mac OS?
I bought a new external harddisk because my old wasn't enough. Anyway I transferred files from my computer and old external harddrive to my new one .
