Does anyone defrag their mac hd on a regular basis? I am a PC guy with a new pb 1g/1.25gb coming and defrag my PC daily...

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am looking for a hdtv, in 32 to 40 inch range, to buy this black friday and was wondering what kind of specs I should consider when choosing one. My primary use will be in logic sessions and sibelius (scoring) I understand that 1080p is a must for reading text (music note heads) and that 720 is crap. I was looking at the Westinghouse 40inch 60hz 1080p hdtv from target. Would this suffice.

It's a 2.16 intel Core 2 duo with the ATI Radeon X1600 128MB video and I'm running OSX 10.7.3. It started happening on Snow leopard so I thought maybe upgrading to Lion would fix it but it has continued exactly the same. I've had an issue for a while now where the computer would just freeze all of a sudden. It happened after a few days at times while sometimes it happen right after a reboot.
Here are the things I've tried.
1. I upgraded to lion
2. I replaced the ram
3. Look at the crash log but found nothing
4. Ram mem check utility but it found nothing
I can boot the computer in safe mode by holding the shift key and it works perfect with no freezing but I loose audio support becuase I think it's not loading the audio drivers. Question is: Can I select what drivers I want on boot when starting in regular mode not safe mode in order to try to disable drivers until I find the issue? Is there anyplace else that I can find which driver caused the computer to freeze after a freeze/crash? If I can ID the driver is there a way to update/replace the driver if it doesn't come up in "software update"? I'm thinking it's the video driver becuase I would occationally get some weird things happening on the screen that I attributed to an older display.

my intel imac is coming up on 3 years old, and ive never done any kind of maintenance on it.
this is my first mac, is there anything i should do or need to know?
it is still running pretty smooth, not slow or anything... just seems like i should empty the cache or something... is all that stuff really automatic on a mac?
I've been experiencing an incredibly frustrating issue with my MacBook Pro. Essentially, until the fan kicks on, it is performing as a computer with its specs should run. At the moment the fan kicks on, it becomes virtually useless. Really, truly glacial.
I have a first-generation unibody model (you know, the ones with the detachable battery). It has repectable specs–2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB. I have also completely re-installed the newest version of Lion from scratch, as well as fresh installs of Adobe Creative Suite + Lightroom. Everything is totally fresh. No funky drivers from God-knows-when eating up my CPUs. So here is what happens: On a regular day (I'm a photographer), I'll open up Lightroom, Photoshop, and Spotify. The computer operates at a very decent clip, nice and snappy. Without modifying ANYTHING, my fans will kick on, and I'll have about 25% of the performance I had, literally, 10 seconds earlier. I have been exhaustive in diagnosis. I'll explain. Checked Activity Monitor, and everything looks completely normal. The programs and processes that I anticipated would be eating CPUs, indeed, are the only ones that are listed doing so. Nothing funky. I have installed Fan Control to monitor the speed of the fans as well as temp of the computer. Everything looks normal there, too. Along with reinstalling my operating systems, I decided to re-build my Lightroom albums. As of right now, there is only one shoot in the entire program. No gigantic libraries being indexed. I also make sure to build all of my thumbnails in advance so when I'm working in Photoshop, Lightroom isn't doing that in the background. About every hour or so, I'll close down Photoshop and Lightroom, and re-open them to clear caches. Only the fan affects the performance. And yes, I have broken open the back of the machine and gave the fans a cleaning. ****, they weren't even that dirty. It's also important to note that, yes, the fans kick on very quickly after opening up intensive programs. Even if I am just starting up a completely cool computer, and the programs have only been open and idle for a matter of minutes. Now should Lightroom with ONE WHOLE shoot cataloged be considered "intensive" for a computer with my specs? I don't even know anymore.

How good does it work? Does Snow Leopord run as smooth with the Intel GPU as with the 320M/330M? The intel GPU does not support OpenCL I heard, so when SL will make use of OpenCL alot, you need to activate the 330M all the time then?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy bank seems to think that my Mac has a virus, as my accounts have had several attempted hacks over the last month. My computer seems to run fine and I haven't noticed any problems, but probably should buy some sort of security software before I change all my account numbers etc. I'm leary of just internet shopping for security software as I am not knowledgable enough to know if something is for real or not. What would you reccommend for as good security software?

I am thinking of getting te macbook Pro after having used one last week. I am completely in love with the OS.But things about the specs worry me. I am just asking to those who use Macbook Pro's whether the specs these laptops have are enough. I do a lot of video editing, mostly 3D animations and a lot of photoshop, along with some 3D rendering. I was wondering if the Intel's 3000HD graphics card in the 13 inch MBP will be enough for all this.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 21.5 inch iMac and am running Snow Leopard. I am familiar with Safe Mode and I understand that it does a disk check and repair and also does some cache clearing during a startup process that allows the user to startup into a system where certain kernel extensions, etc, are disabled to allow for trouble shooting. Then the user can do a restart and end up back in normal mode.
My question is whether starting up into Safe Mode could prove beneficial as some sort of routine maintenance?
Does taking the front glass off of the imac display to clean behind it void the warranty? I am noticing some particles behind the glass and would just like to do it myself. I am still under warranty but i dont feel like bringing my imac to the store if i dont have to.

My internet provider says it has a good signal. whether i use wifi or connected straight to the modem its the same, some pages load some dont, always different on what loads and doesnt. If i connect to a neighbour who has the exact same internet speed and provider it works perfectly fine. Ever since i did a software update 3 or 4 days ago it has been happening.
