View 7 Replieswe all know OSX keeps it self nice & neat, with automated maintenance tasks The question is: How can i tell when OSX has done its maintenance? I thought it would be in console but unsure of the task name. In Windows it would be in Event log.

Recently, after installing Messages from the Apple website, my MacBook Pro has been struggling to perfrom the simplest tasks such as switching tabs in Safari or typing out a sentence in Pages. When it happens the laptop is unresponsive and the coloured mouse wheel appears for about 20-40 seconds and then it will work. It is extremely agrivating. I have thought about reinstalling but surely there is a simple reason

Where do I find the equivalent of Remote Desktop Connection on Mac OS X Lion? I like the feature in MS Windows where I can click on the "MS orb/All Programs" and all of my programs are there? Is there a way to customize something like this in Mac OS? I hate to go to an Application folder and launch my application that way.

It seems I have no application with which to open them on my fancy desktop.... Can you recommend a software program to open or translate the files so that they are readable, and perhaps compatible with iPhoto?

I'd like to know why Apply syncing does not support notes and task syncing with the iPhone. It used to when I had a Balckberry and used a third party sync app.I bought the iPhone (4S) thinking that syncing would be smoother and have less problems than I was having with the Blackberry and third party sync software.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been shutting down my MacBook Pro OS X10.7.3 at night.I just read that OSX runs "maintenance" procedures early in the morning (between 3:15 am and 5:30 am) and that if Mac is powered off at that time, that these maintenance procedures will NOT run.True or False? AppleCare says that it won't make any difference and I won't be affected if these night procedures never run. But, if that's true, then why are they set up to run at night? ? I went to the Apple Manual but it does not address my question.

Well? Is there anyone using the 11.6" as the primary computer? If there is, post your thoughts here. Is the screen too small? How is the performance for your day to day tasks?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Mac pro has been freezing recently which requires me to hard boot and I'm not quite sure whats going on. Let me go a bit more into detail. Now when I say freeze, I don't mean beach balling, I mean literally the entire screen is motionless and I must hard reboot. Its odd really, the computer only freezing when doing certain tasks, such as when I render 3D graphics with Cinema4D, or whenever I play certain games on steam.I have recently installed windows as a partition for bootcamp, but I don't believe that is the issue. I have experienced the freezes while running my machine in both Windows and Mac. Its important to note that when booting my Mac in SAFEMODE, the freezing does not occur while performing the same tasks. So this leads me to believe there is a process going on thats causing the computer to freeze up? What I think I have managed to rule out as problems:
- Not a Hard Drive failing issue, I booted from my backup hard drive and the freezing still occurs.
- Not a Heat issue, I've installed iStat and my top temperature barely raises to 60 degrees celsius when freezing occurs.
- Not an issue with the Windows partition, as I booted from my backup drive that is without the partition and the freezes still occur.
- Not a Ram issue, I took my ram cards out and swapped them around.
One other things... Not sure if this is relevant, but upon one of the freezes, I rebooted and got this on my startup screen, It was bizaar and it froze here as well. This only occured once but I snapped a photo of it.
With a Mac Pro and Leopard, Does the maintenance run automatically at some times, even though the computer is shut down at night?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMost people here know that if you have two computers, both with the same hardware, and one is running Mac OS X and one is running Windows, the Mac is usually faster in most aspects. I know that Windows is, in general, a much less efficient OS, but specifically, why? I've heard that a lot of it is due to the fact that Windows will try to do 100 useless things if you ask it to do one simple thing, also I've heard that Microsoft wrote Windows by getting loads of people to go off and do different parts of the OS, then they would just paste it together rather than taking off the useless parts, fitting each part together and optimizing it. I just need a more straightforward answer as I will be using it in an essay.

Looking at "activity monitor" I can see that "kernel_task" is using up 95% CPU when I have no apps running. So what can I do to bring the ol Mac back into the land of the living? Please please please remember I'm now into unfamiliar territory and don't understand any computer type jargon.

I'm planning to use my Mac Mini media center to replace an old Ventrilo/TeamSpeak server (Winblows). Since I do not plan to have keyboard/mouse access to the Mini, I need to find an easy way to launch the TeamSpeak and Vent server binaries on boot.Since the media center is set to auto-login and run an Automator workflow that mounts 3 AFP volumes and opens Plex, I would like to add upon my script to launch TeamSpeak and Ventrilo server. However, this becomes problematic when I add a Shell Script action. The script keeps running because it is looking for Terminal to complete its action and quit so it can move on to the next process. If I terminate the script, it kills the Ventrilo Server application.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 21.5 inch iMac and am running Snow Leopard. I am familiar with Safe Mode and I understand that it does a disk check and repair and also does some cache clearing during a startup process that allows the user to startup into a system where certain kernel extensions, etc, are disabled to allow for trouble shooting. Then the user can do a restart and end up back in normal mode.
My question is whether starting up into Safe Mode could prove beneficial as some sort of routine maintenance?
Does taking the front glass off of the imac display to clean behind it void the warranty? I am noticing some particles behind the glass and would just like to do it myself. I am still under warranty but i dont feel like bringing my imac to the store if i dont have to.

I was thinking about how nice it would be to see an Excel-style layout of my tasks in iCal with rows and columns for the quick editing of properties.
Individually editing each task with + I is frustrating.

so I wanted to change my documents icon to a really fancy icon so I found this site called [URL] and followed the steps to change it into a suitcase of some sort. But my documents wouldn't open, and a dialog box popped up and said something about how no application can be run with this and it had the option to choose an application. So I deleted the suitcase, and now the folder has turned into a UNIX file which is not accessible.
Two months ago I switched web hosting providers/services from a Linux server to a UNIX server. For the most part the functionality is fine but the ability to upload files using any FTP client is near impossible. We've tried Fetch (4.x and 5.x) Filezilla, Cyberduck, Dreamweaver, and an old copy of GoLive but it takes 6 minutes or more to upload a 230byte file!. The upload is relatively fast but it hangs up on the exiting handshake, or drops the connection and has to reconnect.
We spoke with Fetch and tested both copies on their UNIX server---no problem. We've tried our other clients on other UNIX, Windows, and Linux servers---no problem. We've had the web host and our service provider look at DNS blocks, etc. and all seems to be fine. Pings and trace routes seem fine. The web host company indicated that they believed that it was an issue with their server but eventually threw up their hands and said that they couldn't figure it out (not Mac friendly I suspect). My questions is two fold:
1) Can anyone give me an idea what IS the problem?
2) Can anyone recommend a good 'Mac-friendly' web hosting service that doesn't have issues with Mac's, will allow installation of a variety of CMS, eCommerce solutions, and of course seamless FTP access with variety of clients.
I'm such a n00bcake with this I don't understand it at all. Can someone help me install this program (link) in Mac OS X? I looked all over and just don't get it. It says any Unix system running X11. >.> [URL:...]
