my intel imac is coming up on 3 years old, and ive never done any kind of maintenance on it.
this is my first mac, is there anything i should do or need to know?
it is still running pretty smooth, not slow or anything... just seems like i should empty the cache or something... is all that stuff really automatic on a mac?
Does taking the front glass off of the imac display to clean behind it void the warranty? I am noticing some particles behind the glass and would just like to do it myself. I am still under warranty but i dont feel like bringing my imac to the store if i dont have to.

Are there any regularly scheduled maintenance jobs which I should be carrying out? If so what programs/tools do you recommend to keep my system in good running condition? I get a fair amount of email which I delete regularly. I know with PC there are all kinds of diagnostics which you can run.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using a 20" white intel iMac and cannot manage to remove a linux boot disc from the optical drive.At first, the only way that i managed to boot to the linux disc in the first place was from the Startup Disk menu in OSX. I could not even get to the Startup Manager ('opt' at boot) or boot straight to the disc ('C').Now i'm in a position where no matter what i do, the system boots to the linux disc. I cannot even force the startup into OSX to try to eject the disc from there. I've tried holding all of these keys/combinations at startup
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been researching for a while on upgrading my white intel iMac from a "Core Duo" processor to a "Core 2 Duo" processor. The processor I would like to use is a Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T5750 processor, which would give me 2 additional cores as well as a small speed bump from 1.83 ghz to 2.0 ghz. I figured compatibility should be fine considering the FSB speed (667 Mhz) is the same. Has anyone tried this? Can anyone tell me if this will work for sure?

View 21 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel IMAC, which is now out of warranty as I have had it for 16 months (and I was dumb enough not to get AppleCare). A few days back, my computer would not startup and everytime I hit the power button, I would hear some spinning noise but no chime from the iMAC. Yesterday, I tried it again and this time I heard the chime but the monitor did not start. I was then able to SSH into the MAC and see that it is indeed connected to the network and booted up, but the screen is still dead. Any ideas what I should do before the painful trip to the apple store ?

In the pic attached is that a iMac G5 or intel. I see spot light on the top right so it's either running tiger or leopard. I thought I saw a apple remote magnetic thingy on the side. Recently my iMac had been experiencing problems, I took apart and checked everything and put back together. Problems were gone but the screen suddenly started gradienting from brighter on the top to darker on the bottom. Brightness overall is also lower now.
My question is what can be creating this? The black tape that was around was ripped, I've heard it's creating static isolation, can that be it? Also I possibly pulled power cord too hard, can it be possible that display is not getting enough power?
Yes I plugged in the block heater.....
Tried to reset the SMC (apple's only advice)
Tried to kick it into boot menu... no luck
managed to boot to Leopard install disk. backed into Disk Utility.... Verify System Disk produces: "Invalid B-tree node size...Disk Verify / Repair fail".
too bad too sad... no more information.
I don't know enough to know whether this is a SW failure or a drive failure, and my searches has led me here.

My intel 2006 iMac recently died, and I'm wondering if I could one of the 1GB RAM sticks into the a G3 iMac I own. And more importantly: If I could put the hard drive from the intel iMac into the iMac G3.
The intel iMac was made in late 2006 and the iMac G3 was made in 1999, 1998 or 2000.
I had re-installed of all my mac disks and then eventually installed Leopard and my ram had shrunk from 2GB to 1GB !
View 5 Replies View Relatedi've got an iMac from late 2006. and i'm trying to upgrade the ram..here's the specs...iMac intel MA589LL/A 20in 2.16 1GB ram 250 gig ect so on the box it says upgradeable to 3 GB of ram... but the computer has two slots... which currently have a 512MB card in each of them. so my question is how do i install three gigs of ram? a 1GB card and a 2GB card? this doesn't seem to make sense, because i thought you were always supposed to keep them balanced.... so should i just install 2 - 2GB cards... for a total of 4 gigs... even though the computer will only used 3 gigs?

After connecting the imac to a new router the system hung completely up. After each input, e.g. opening preview or a browser, the coloured turning disc appeared and nothing happened anymore. Several restarts, also in safe mode, were unsuccessful. I could not switch to another user. Restart is only possible at all from installation disc but thereafter problem remains the same.

I hope you don't mind helping a guy out in his choice in what he truly needs... so I guess I'll get down to the basics.
First off, music is my main priority when it comes to computing, I write all sorts of electronic music, I'm used to working in Windows under Ableton or FL Studio, so I'm not hip to the Mac software for these functions.
In addition to the electronic music I write, I'm also very much into music instruments, I've been playing drums for around 8 years now, bass for 5 years, guitar even... so I plan on multi-track recording... up to 16, maybe even 32?I do plan on opening up my own home studio, I would be using this PC, (not sure if the MBP or the iMac)
I'm also a lightweight gamer, playing games such as Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft, or StarCraft II (Diablo 3 will probably be my biggest gaming vice when it comes out) sparingly in my free time, which would be better for this sort of light gaming?I sometimes spend up to 8 hours on the computer, also, so if these screens are too harsh on the eyes after extended periods of time, I'd appreciate if someone could enlighten me to that.
SO, with all that said, which do you guys think would suit me better? (and I'm really thinking the iMac would)... I used to want portability, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable taking a $2,000 laptop with me around campus at the local community college.
- Needs to be able to record up to 32 tracks of audio
- Needs to be able to render high quality tracks
- Minimal latency
- Able to run some of the less graphic intensive games out now
- Easy on the eyes for extended periods of time
Oh, I'm also an amateur filmmaker, I love filming, editing, and producing, etc.Would you guys suggest the i5? i7? Oh, and what clock speed does the 2.93GHz i7 run at when in turbo-boost using all cores?Oh, and what's the resale value of the iMac compared to the MBP? we all know OSX keeps it self nice & neat, with automated maintenance tasks The question is: How can i tell when OSX has done its maintenance? I thought it would be in console but unsure of the task name. In Windows it would be in Event log.

However, the how to do it words seem to suggest that everything on the G5 should be neat. Such things as all documents should be in the Document folder, but does this mean all personal letters as well? She has asked me questions on these things that have made me stop and think. Then I realize that I really don't know the answers.
What actually is the intended structure of the Mac OSX system? What is supposed to be in the Documents, Library, etc. And does every user have there own set of these folders.

I get some fan noise occassionally on new Intel iMac .. is this normal ? Sometimes their is no noise .. apart from this everything is working fine ... look forward to some replies in regards to fan noise.

I want to know how to install it on my computer. I'm not new to opening computer and installing hardware (Was a computer tech support for IBM compatible computers).
After searching for a bit and reading the forum, i unpluged my computer and took it to my bed to examine it. According to my findings, i believe there are 5 screw (not flat head or star) that i need to take out in order for the back part of my imac to get apart from the front see thru plastic part. After looking at some pics on google i think i should be able to determine my internal hard drive.
Can anyone confirm if i need to take out those 5 screws under the imac, not the once to take out the ram, i upgraded my ram no problem.
And it would be much help to me to see pictures on take my imac apart and what to see and what to take out or cables to unplug and what NOT to unplug to install my new 500gig WD internal hard drive.
If unable to do so, many somone can direct me to a site with pics or video on how to do it. I saw one on a macbook... Macbook is different then imac.

View 9 Replies View Relateddid a quick search on Apple, and here but didn't turn up much of anything useful. I've got a friend with an iMac that won't boot up. Pressing the power button doesn't seem to do much of anything. I've tried unplugging the power cord, and re-plugging it, but alas, I got the fan to rev up for a second and then blahh, nothing again. It's a 20" model with the black bezel. Not entirely sure of the system specs, I only got a couple minutes with it last night. Do these machines have any common problems like this?
