View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 2009 iMac that I have tried previously to upgrade to Lion. I remember that it was severly unsuccessful. I do not remember why.Â
Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac11,1 Processor Name:Intel Core i7 Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz Number Of Processors:1 Total Number Of Cores:4 L2 Cache (per core):256 KB L3 Cache:  8 MB Memory:8 GB Processor Interconnect Speed:4.8 GT/s Boot ROM Version:IM111.0034.B02 SMC Version (system):1.54f36Â
I do remember that I tried both an upgrade and a fresh install, but both were unsuccessful. Problem is that there are games and software that are coming out now that are only compatible with 10.7. It is time to get up to date, but either I get an dupgrade working or I buy a new iMac. Buying one just for the upgrade, seems a little counter customer centric.

Before I tear apart my iMac, it may just be faster to ask. I am considering simply upgrading the processor on my 2009 iMac instead of purchasing a newer model. Of coure the newer models could potentially have a different motherboard, mostly to support the Thunderbolt but if the differences between new and my 2009 model are not so significant, then a CPU upgrade may be more intelligent.Â
My current specs are as follows: Model Name:         iMac Model Identifier:         iMac11,1 Processor Name:         Intel Core i7 Processor Speed:         2.8 GHz Number Of Processors:         1 Total Number Of Cores:         4 L2 Cache (per core):         256 KB L3 Cache:         8 MB Memory:         8 GB Processor Interconnect Speed:         4.8 GT/s Boot ROM Version:         IM111.0034.B02 SMC Version (system):         1.54f36 Question is, without looking, is this a "socketed" model where I can simply plug a new chip in? Of course I can open my system up and see, but that will include "down time" and I prefer to avoid as much as possible. Just as with most "Winblows" systems and MBs, the chips are socketed and can easily be replaced where the MBs are compatible. Mac can't be all that much harder, but I can't say I have ever seen a MAC CPU upgrade for sale.

I have a 2009 model Imac and I upgraded from 2gb to 4gb but now after about 20 minutes of the computer being on it will freeze up randomly. It could be 20 mins - 3 hours of use before it freezes up. I did my research and I'm didn't get any RAM my Imac couldn't handle...

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a set of Mushkin Apple 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz SODIMM 9-9-9-24 (976647A) RAM for my mid 2011 27" iMac and everything ran great for a few days. I was able to sleep and wake the machine with no problems. Last night I was doing some graphic intensive work on my machine and when I had finished, the fans were still running high but I was going to bed so I put the machine to sleep. Normally the fans would stop at this point but they kept running. I assumed the machine was still hot so it was just cooling after sleeping. The next morning the machine would not wake. I had to do a hard reset to get it to boot up again I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM but it still doesn't wake from sleep. Am I have issues with my RAM?

I recently got an 20' 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Imac. It came with 1 gig of Ram. I purchased 2 2Gig SODIMM chips from New Egg. The ram specs matches what the little manual says. ddr2, pc2-5300 667MHz. When I install the new chips, the mac won't start. Period. No beeps, no nothing. I can sort of hear it try to start, then quits.
When I put back the original ram chip. Works again. When I have the original ram chip AND 1 of the new chips (for a total of 3 gigs of RAM) it works.Swapped one new chip with the other (as long as the original is in) Works.Original Chip is on the right side, New is on the left. Swapped places. Works. The mac will start ONLY if the original is in place. I should be able to start it with the nes ones in but it won't. I know both works because I swapped them.Anybody have any ideas on what's going on? Is there a setting somewhere I need to change or something?
Here is the message I get when I load a page requiring Java:Â To open "Plugin Process" you need to install a Java runtime, but you are not connected to the internet. But I am connected to the internet. The internet is working just fine. I had no problem until I upgraded to Lion today.

I upgraded my 27" iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 duo from 4GB of ram (2x2GB) to 8GB of ram (2x4GB). I followed the instructions and removed the old ram, put in the new ram and after many restarts my computer finally came up. When it did finally come up I had the spinning wheel of death. When the screensaver came on, I heard my skype connect and I moved my mouse and wouldn't you know my computer was working! So to test to see if my computer would work again, I restarted. Same thing - came right up to spinning wheel - screen saver turned on after 30 minutes and again - Skype connected and no more spinning. Memory on Activity Monitor is looking great - but my computer is useless until the screen saver starts.

the new machines will switch between graphics chips. all very nice (at last), but my 15" MBP 2.8 doesn't and it's a real pain for me as I often go between apps than need the extra speed and then back to e.g. Word, and could really do with the extended battery life (I have the old style battery pack) any news if the older graphics systems can be worked to switch on the fly...i.e. without having to logout and shut down all the open apps, and work?

Should I go for it? There's no advantage to having two cores in two sockets versus having four cores in one socket, right?

I've got a Mac mini (2, 1) 2 GHz, 2 GB of RAM. I installed this prefpane:
/Developer/Extras/PreferencePanes/ to get a look at what is going on, like in Activity Monitor in Windows.
I opened up the Processor Palette and did some basic tasks like going over the Dock, opening Dashboard, etc and found that, at time, those basic tasks used 50% of my processing power! Also the Time Machine GUI used 90%
How can I reclaim some of this power?
