My 5 y.o. aluminum iMac recently went kaput on me. Problems it has:
-Freezes on any program after startup
-Freezes during safe boot mode; grey line won't progress past first 10% or so
-DVD stuck in optical drive and nothing works to get it out, so I can't boot from my install disk
-fsck -fy doesn't complete, and keeps timing out
-Migration Assistant either stalls the receiving computer, or just gives me "network" errors (even though I'm connected to the internet), or other errors.
I can't run terminal, disk utility, or any other kind of programs. How do I rescue my files from my failing iMac??

I just had my iMac hard drive replaced due to some corruption found on it. I had it into the genius bar because of this same issue - beeping three beeps and then locking up requiring a manual shut down. Just got it back this week. Happened again after about 6 days.Running presentation software my system was purchased optimally to run.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn every restart, Firefox opens by itself and installs itself in the dock no matter what I do. I've made sure the settings in Lion are correct for re-opening apps. Also, I tried to delete a line from a Stickie and it reappears on startup. It's just in my user profile. I created another test user and it didn't happen.

I was off of my iMac for an hour or two so my screen saver when on. I went to wake the computer and it was frozen. I tried using the keyboard and mouse to wake up the computer from the screen saver, but it would not work, so I powered the iMac down manually from the button on the back. I let it sit for 15 minutes, then I tried to start the computer up again. Now at start up, I get to a blank white screen with the spinning moving pin wheel, and that is it.

A key stroke or mouse click won't remove the screensaver. However dragging the mouse across the screen reveals the login screen behind. Any fixes?

You'll try several times to boot your laptop before it will succeed to open. (it's a 5-times boot to succeed - average) I've tried several times: P-Ram reset, repair the permissions of Macintosh HD with latest Lion recovery & from an external boot too.None of this has solved this issue. I'm sure I'm not the only one who saw that issue. Have to boot 5 or 10 times his Macbook Pro to succeed a boot is not a normal use

I have a Early 2008 Mac Pro running Lion. Its been running well but then last night it froze while I was on the internet. Pretty rare that this happens so I held the power off button and turned it off. Turned it back on and it made the chime noise, apple logo came up, a grey spinning wheel came up for about 30 seconds and then it stopped spinning and the computer froze there.
I tried a bunch of different things. I tried rebooting in safe mode, Recovery mode, From time machine external hard drive, Tried booting in the Windows partition that I have (its on the same as the boot drive I'm trying to boot in Lion off of).

I have a 2009 iMac that I have tried previously to upgrade to Lion. I remember that it was severly unsuccessful. I do not remember why.

I do remember that I tried both an upgrade and a fresh install, but both were unsuccessful. Problem is that there are games and software that are coming out now that are only compatible with 10.7. It is time to get up to date, but either I get an dupgrade working or I buy a new iMac. Buying one just for the upgrade, seems a little counter customer centric.

I replaced my hard drvie in my A1208 iMac yesterday, and didn't have the OS disc or a keyboard. After installing the HD, I booted the computer to make sure everything was working. I got the "?" screen, and everything seemend to be working just fine. So today, I picked up a keyboard from the Apple store and dug out the disc After I got back home, I booted the computer to install the OS, and the screen went black a few seconds after the chime and grey screen, but was still running. (I could hear the fan and disc spinning) I've tried to restart, but i'm still having the same problem. I've tried to research other issues, but haven't found anything comparable.

I am running OS X Lion on my startup disk is full. I checked my storage in the about this mac window. 49.72GB of my HD space is taken up by Other. Also in Disk Utility under the partition almost the entire rectangle is light blue. I am worried that my MacBook is to old to run the software. I use my machine to run Adobe CS4. The error turns up when I run Photoshop so I am unable to run the program at all.

I just downgraded my iBook G3 600 from Tiger to Panther to see if it would increase the machine's performance. I did a clean install of Panther, upgraded to 10.3.9, and now for some strange reason, when I boot the machine (even cold) the fan comes on and constantly runs, which it never did before. However If I wake the machine from sleep the fan doesn't come on -- it only happens from a full boot-up (every time).
I am Using a new Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook. After having used, and been pleased with Firefox for years now, I find that it just isn't up to snuff on this system. It's super slow most of the time (whereas Safari isn't). It isn't optimized for some websites, like eBay.. Can't upload photos using Firefox. And each time I try to quit Firefox, I have to go in and manually "Force Quit" Because it freezes and won't quit on its own.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy new 13 inch MacBook Pro keeps on freezing. I'm only on iTunes and FireFox. Anybody else have these problem?.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having a constant laptop freeze issue with both Safari and Firefox. Laptop freeze occurs upon page load followed by most laptop functions being rendered unresponsive and a forced power reboot becomes necessary. In most cases, the cursor remains the only active item on the desktop and I am sometimes able to click on other open applications and bring them forward but that is the limit of their functionality. I can't force quit them via keyboard command either and the system clock is almost always frozen.
During the forced power reboot, the laptop does not seem to go through a permissions correction process (i.e., the long delay that you experience during gray apple screen start-up.) The reboot process is fairly quick and sometimes the only abnormality occasionally noted after reboot is that the desktop background has gone back to a default setting. Not sure if related but sometimes the iTunes library is damaged and has to be rebuilt if application was open prior to freeze. I've run complete diagnostics via Disk Utility, fsck, Applejack and TechTool Pro and no problems are noted.

I'd switched to Firefox a year or two ago from Safari after some frustration with Safari's bugs...but since I'd updated to Firefox 3.0.7 it has become ridiculously slow. Here's a typical scenario: Opening Firefox is no problem. Google page appears in a jiffy. But as soon as I clear the address bar and attempt to type in a URL, the beachball comes and Firefox literally freezes for a few minutes, even making it hard for me to switch to any other app that's open. I attempt to type in a complete URL regardless, and it takes Firefox forever to receive the input. The only way I can describe it is like the computer was typing in super-slow motion.
On top of that, I can hear this intermittent "grind/whir" sound of the processor while it lags, I suppose struggling to process the input. BTW, if I clicked on any of the bookmarked pages in the bar beneath the addy bar, it goes directly to them w/o problem. It's only when I attempt to type anything in the address bar that the lag occurs. This has become a total frustration of mine, especially now that I'm doing web design and need Firefox's Firebug add-on to identify CSS elements on the fly in the midst of tight deadlines. In the meantime, Safari works, but it doesn't have that feature.
