I just downgraded my iBook G3 600 from Tiger to Panther to see if it would increase the machine's performance. I did a clean install of Panther, upgraded to 10.3.9, and now for some strange reason, when I boot the machine (even cold) the fan comes on and constantly runs, which it never did before. However If I wake the machine from sleep the fan doesn't come on -- it only happens from a full boot-up (every time).
My G4 iBook's goes full blast when ever I open it (waking it from sleep mode) or when I turn it on. I don't remember this always happening. The fans are really loud, it bothers me. Not the end of the world, but if there is a simple solution I'd like to do it. Also the fan dies down pretty fast so I don't think its a huge deal, but if its going to lead to a big problem I want to fix it now.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an iBook g3 running Tiger that I bought second hand almost two years ago that has been working perfectly up until yesterday. I use it for uni during the day and usually turn the machine off overnight while it charges. The other night I left it 'asleep' while charging instead of off. When I came to use it in the morning it would not wake up and was totally silent although it's pulsing 'on' light in the front part of the casing was on. The charging cable was still connected and was green, indicating a full charge, but the battery-life light display, when pressed, showed only a single light, which flashds a few times, indicating the battery wasn't fully charged.
While trying to get the thing to do something I removed the battery. This caused the ibook to turn off the pulsating light - it was completely off and apparently not drawing power from it's adapter, which was still plugged in. I have been trying since then to get the computer to turn on. No matter how long it is left charging, the battery never indicates anything other than a single light with a few flashes, the computer will not turn on and the cable of the charger stays green when plugged in. I have tried inserting an older battery - which I know worked, it just only used to hold an hour's charge or so - and it will not charge at all. I have also tried resetting the PMU, which appears to have done nothing
I just change the name of my computer and now when I restart I don't have the login window. The computer just keep going in the Mac OS window with the blue line forever.

It went into sleep mode and never woke up. after complete reboot 1 long beep and silence. after taking the battery out and disconnect for about 4 hours I get the beep, but inbetween absolute nothing. Anyone has tips or a solution. there is no additional memory installed.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm relatively new to Macs and I wanted to try a clean install (or erase and install) on my ibook. I recently purchased a MBP and since Leopard is on the horizon, I wanted to do a "trial run" of installing an updated operating system. I know that you can just hit update instead of doing a clean install, but I've been reading that things run better when you do a fresh install. My old ibook still has Panther on it and I figured I could try to install Tiger on it from my MBP disks.
I know that this represents a violation of the license, but I thought it would be worth it to ensure that I don't make any major mistakes when I'm doing the same procedure with my brand new MBP when Leopard gets released. When I tried booting from the disk from my ibook I got a kernel panic which I interpreted as a sign that it was not a good idea so I abandoned the project. Now every time I try to start my ibook I get another kernel panic and I'm afraid I just broke my old computer.
Purchased this notebook used, but very nicely cared for, excellent condition. I ran the Apple Hardware Test and everything passed including the logic board.
The battery has 500+cycles. The problem is laptop shuts down at 50% or less of battery. Clock is wrong at startup but is correct a few seconds later.
Runs forever and very nicely on ac power.
My iBook will not display anything on its screen. Rather, it just remains black. One time, the screen did come on, but then shortly after booting, it flickered a lot and then went black again. A year ago, something similiar happened and when I took it to be serviced (when I had AppleCare), they had to send it away and have a new logic board installed. Now this machine is out of warrenty and and I am not sure what to do, or even if it is the same problem. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
My hard drive on my old B&W finally crashed the other day. I got a new hard drive for it a few days ago. I upgraded the graphics card from a rage 128 to a radeon 7000 sometime ago. Do I need to put the old rage 128 in when I reinstall OS 10.3? Or is it ok to install it with the Radeon 7000 in it?

I bought a Mac G3 Blue and White upgraded to G4 500mhz and 1gb ram. Now it currently has OS 9.1 running on it I got a copy of Tiger I wanted to throw on it cause. I Heard it would run according to lowendmacs site so what the hell I'll give it a try so pop cd in turn computer off restart and nothing just starts up like normal in chinese. I just want Tiger english or hell even english at this point would be awesome I know like 4 symbols in kanji that is no where near enough to get by. HDD space is 40gig.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.
I'm having my pb repaired from my casing warping. I brought it and the and they agreed to fix it. He ordered the parts and said when they arrive they would call me to bring it in. I guess they could do it at the store ( )i'm surprized it wasn't sent out. ne woot on the order sheet it says "Board, Logic, 1.5 GHz 64MB VAM". Now my question is I did a BTO and upgraded the VRAM to 128. Did he order the wrong part? Will it still work?

How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?
I just bought a parts ibook from ebay, but I managed to fix it, except there was no hard drive. I currently have a 6 GB HD in it with OS X.3.9 on it, but I want tiger. I have the tiger family pack, so I have a license for it. It only has a CD-ROM drive, so I am wondering if I can buy a 40 GB HD, and clone the one from my G4 onto it.

I just upgraded to OS X Lion 10.7.3 and now it's telling me I can't open the application Quicken anymore, because PowerPC applications are no longer supported! I sincerely hope someone knows how to resolve this. I'm in big trouble! I get the same message when I try to open Excel, Word, and a game called Mah Jong.

My hard disk is 320 GB & I've only used 111 GB so far so why is this message popping up & what can I do about it without deleting my precious files?
I'm a fairly naive mac user and got my friend to instal my new harddrive.
It's big, with 320GB.
However, he set up a startupdisk partition, with a size of 20GB, called OSX.
For some reason this is now full and slowing down my MAC which is particularly annoying as I have college essays to submit very soon!
I've checked what is on my startupdisk and it is as follows:

I don't understand what this means but I have copied applications, library and system to my HD and tried to delete off startupdisk but it won't let me. say it is require by mac.
