Power Mac G5 :: Hard Drive Loud And Shut Down Computer Message

Dec 3, 2007

This morning the hard drive on my G5 sounded like it was at 8000 rpm's and there was a message on my screen to shut down the computer using the power button. I did this. Now anytime I try to power back up, I get the white screen with the apple and the "booting" icon, which then goes to a blue screen with the same icon, which then is just the blue screen with my mouse icon floating around. Also, on the random occasion, after booting to the blue screen it takes me to a DOS looking screen that asks for my login and password, of which I have neither.

Intel Mac :: Won't Turn On, Get Message "must Shut Down" Before It Boots U

Jun 5, 2012

My wife's iMac (about 4 years old, OS is pretty up to date) won't boot up. I turn it on, get the apple logo, gray-ness "curtains" down and I get that yucky "you must turn your computer off by holding down the on button" (or someting like that) in several languages.

Tried these, none worked:

(1) -Shut down your Mac
-Disconnect the power cord
-Press and hold the Mac’s power button for 5 seconds
-Release the button
-Reattach the power and boot the Mac as usual

(2) -Shut down the computer.

-Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously.

-Turn on the computer.

-Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

-Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the 3rd time.

-Release the keys and let your system boot up.

(3) -Power the iMac off

-Power your iMac on and hold down the "Option" key

-Choose your internal hard drive (Macintosh HD) and boot up your iMac

MacBook Pro :: Gets A Gray Screen Followed By A Message That Will Have To Shut Down

Apr 25, 2012

This started happening around the beginning of this year.  I contacted Apple Support and they worked with me on-line and over the phone.  It happened again the next day.  After it happened about 20 more times, I took it into the Apple Store and they decided to reinstall the OS.  Since then, it has happened about 10 more times.

This has happened with and without attached devices or flash drives.  It has happened on different wi-fi networks.  It generally happens when I am navigating with the track pad or with a mouse.  I don't recall ever leaving the room and returning to find the gray screen.  In other words, it happens shortly after I have moved the cursor.  I've noticed the pinwheel usually appears before the gray screen.

Intel Mac :: Error Message "The Disk You Inserted Was Not Readable By This Computer"

Jul 5, 2012

I got this message this afternoon "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with the options to either "Ignore" or Eject"  This is in reference to my External Hard Drive "Buffalo" 1TB. I just got my Mac 27inch this week and when i got it i hooked up this hard drive to it, historically used on my old windows machine, but was still FAT32 formatted. I was able to upload all my pics to Aperture and music to iTunes. Was able to surf the data no problem. This afternoon i noticed that it was no longer visible in the "Finder" and afre rebooting several times, got this message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" Neither the mac nor the HD was moved since yesterday, early this am when it worked.

Some info:I had used this external storage unit for more then a year.I sold my PC today so cant test if the hard drive still works on that. I have the latest 27 inch mac (2.7GHz)Storage is connected to a power source ( I tried both USB and FireWire, both yield the same message)

OS X :: Why Does My G-5 Shut Down My Computer In Sleep Mode

Nov 14, 2008

Could someone please explain to me why my computer is shutting down in sleep-mode. In addition, when it happens, the fan goes into hyperblow, which doesn't make sense because it would not be operating if the system were completely shut down. It acts like it is shut down but won't respond or wake up, etc. I re-loaded my system software per the Mac Store Genius' advice, but that didn't work. Is it possible that my power supply is going?

OS X :: Computer Seemed To Be Overloading From The Applications And Performed A Emergency Shut Down?

Nov 12, 2009

I was doing software update today when all of a sudden my computer seemed to be overloading from the apps I was running prior...After 10 minutes of "Circle of Death" I performed a emergency shut down. (Probably not the best idea) Afterwards I restarted and was stuck on the main loading screen, (Apple with grey swirling circle) I left this for about 20 minutes came back to check on it and nothing had happened, several restarts with no new conclusion.I popped in the startup disk and ran a diagnostic on it with everything coming back fine...What the heck do I do now?

MacBook :: Working With Some Of The Files On It And It Shut Down My Computer A Couple Times?

Dec 17, 2010

I am having a problem with my external hard drive. I was using it the other day working with some of the files on it and it shut down my computer a couple times. The second time it did this, after the computer shut down, I would turn it on and then it would go right back off until I removed the hard drive and turned it on and it was fine. Now my computer won't recognize the hard drive at all when i plug it in. The light on the hard drive will come on but it will not show up on my computer.

The hard drive is a WD 1TB Passport and it still works fine with every other computer I plug it into, PCs and macs both.I have a late 2008 13" Aluminum Macbook

OS X :: Electric Shock Reset Clock / Wireless / Shut Off The Computer?

Jun 15, 2010

I don't know if this is something to be worried about but I notice that when the tip of the display port cord ( from the ACD ) touches the metal frame of my MacBook Pro there is a tiny blue arch of electricity visible. Well, I just bumped that cord into the frame of the MBP and as soon as that happened the computer completely shut off, it just went to a black screen and turned back on when I connected it via AC outlet. When the computer started back up the clock was messed up ( 2008 date ) and it had forgotten all of my WIFI passwords.

I was just wondering why this happens?

Mac Pro :: Need To Restart Computer Message On Reboot

May 17, 2009

I have a 2008 MacPro Octo 2.8GHz. Whilst I was in Vista64 (a separate drive, not visualization) I was playing a halflife game called day of defeat. The game froze twice, requiring a crtl-alt-del to release it and stop the application that was not working. When I then rebooted into OSX, the "You need to restart your computer" screen appeared in 4 languages, which I believe is the Kernel panic screen. I've done the hardware test that reports no problems (D key). I've tried re-installing the operating system, (C key), no go just panics. I've tried a safe boot (shift) lots of disk activity followed by a panic. I've even reset the PRAM, no effect.

The queer thing is it will boot into Vista64, but there is some screen corruption whilsts its booting, but once in, it works OK with the exception of playing any 3D games, they will not launch (re-installed drivers). Vista reports that there is no 3D hardware acceleration. Does OSX require 3D just to get past the login screen? I've removed some ram and removed all the other hard drives. I'm beginning to think the 8800GT is playing up, otherwise why would vista still work?, but not 3D games? Is there any software I can use in Vista to check the 8800GT? I also noticed that it seemed to be taking longer and longer to shut down.

MacBook Pro :: Popup Message/You Need To Restart Your Computer?

Jun 23, 2009

So I did read though the previous forum relating to this problem. None of the posters were having the exact issue I am, and I could not find a solution within.

my hardware: powerbook G4. 1.33GHz Power PC. (upgraded to) 2GB DDR SDRAM. (just upgraded to) 320GB WD HDD

my OS: Just installed 10.4.11

Here's the scenario (I hope someone can help):
Several months ago my poor baby took a dive off a counter onto the tile floor, while running. Never before this did I see the "Kernal Panic" restart screen.

Immediately following the fall, I get the error if the computer is bumped, moved or if I put weight on the keyboard (palms).

I feared it was a HDD issue so I hastily replaced the toshiba 60GB HD with a WD320 HD. And at the same time I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11.

The computer seemed fine for a couple weeks, now I am getting the error again with increasing frequency. Mostly when I put pressure on the keyboard (palms).

What I tried: new HD, new OS, checked the RAM to see if it had come loose in the fall.

Could it be my video card? Is it more likely hardware or software?
