OS X :: Restart Computer Message During Uploading .zip File
Nov 22, 2008
I've had my imac for a few weeks now with only one problem that's recently occured and the problem is this. During the process of uploading attachments to emails or posts or uploading anything to putfile, the screen dims from the top and I get a multilingual message telling me to hold down the power button for several seconds. This first occured while uploading a .zip file.

I have a 2008 MacPro Octo 2.8GHz. Whilst I was in Vista64 (a separate drive, not visualization) I was playing a halflife game called day of defeat. The game froze twice, requiring a crtl-alt-del to release it and stop the application that was not working. When I then rebooted into OSX, the "You need to restart your computer" screen appeared in 4 languages, which I believe is the Kernel panic screen. I've done the hardware test that reports no problems (D key). I've tried re-installing the operating system, (C key), no go just panics. I've tried a safe boot (shift) lots of disk activity followed by a panic. I've even reset the PRAM, no effect.
The queer thing is it will boot into Vista64, but there is some screen corruption whilsts its booting, but once in, it works OK with the exception of playing any 3D games, they will not launch (re-installed drivers). Vista reports that there is no 3D hardware acceleration. Does OSX require 3D just to get past the login screen? I've removed some ram and removed all the other hard drives. I'm beginning to think the 8800GT is playing up, otherwise why would vista still work?, but not 3D games? Is there any software I can use in Vista to check the 8800GT? I also noticed that it seemed to be taking longer and longer to shut down.

So I did read though the previous forum relating to this problem. None of the posters were having the exact issue I am, and I could not find a solution within.
my hardware: powerbook G4. 1.33GHz Power PC. (upgraded to) 2GB DDR SDRAM. (just upgraded to) 320GB WD HDD
my OS: Just installed 10.4.11
Here's the scenario (I hope someone can help):
Several months ago my poor baby took a dive off a counter onto the tile floor, while running. Never before this did I see the "Kernal Panic" restart screen.
Immediately following the fall, I get the error if the computer is bumped, moved or if I put weight on the keyboard (palms).
I feared it was a HDD issue so I hastily replaced the toshiba 60GB HD with a WD320 HD. And at the same time I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11.
The computer seemed fine for a couple weeks, now I am getting the error again with increasing frequency. Mostly when I put pressure on the keyboard (palms).
What I tried: new HD, new OS, checked the RAM to see if it had come loose in the fall.
Could it be my video card? Is it more likely hardware or software?

So when I turn it on I keep getting this message: You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.

My imac has started to have a kernel panic all the time lately. It is where the whole screen will go darker and then a box in all different languages comes up saying I need to restart the computer. I have a couple of questions in relation to this, first if I reinstall and then back up from timemachine will I have the same issue again? If I do a fresh install and reimport all my music and vids manually will that be a better way to do things?

My girlfriend's Macbook gave her the restart computer, kernal panic message earlier today when she tried to open a .tiff file in Photoshop CS3. She did as she was told, however now the computer won't get past the apple logo when we hit the power button. Every time the message comes up. I have had a look around the net and tried the advice I could find, but haven't had any luck.
I have tried resetting pram and the other one. I have also taken out each memory one at a time to see if this makes a difference, but each time the message still appears. She has a 2007 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, which we upgraded around a month ago from Tiger. It's got 2gb of ram and I think 2.2Ghz Intel Core Duo Processor.

I have just shipped my Mac Mini to its new home and I've had reports that the panic error is appearing on boot up: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart Button." This screen appears on the blue window just after the grey apple screen has disappeared and does not get as far as the desktop at the same point each time. We have tried to reinstall mac OS from the original install disk but holding the "C" Key or the "Option" Key down on restart doesn't boot from disc. Is there a way you can view the Kernel Panic log before you boot into Mac OS so we can try and pin point the source of this problem. I'm wondering if this could have been the result of the shipping that has caused some hardware to come loose.

I'm using an upload service to upload a file that may take another 10 hours to complete. I'd like to play a game at the same time that runs off of a CD, will this pause or hault my upload in any way? The game is the Sims, and it plays fullscreen just like WoW, etc. Just wondering if Firefox will resume the upload.

I zipped a .doc file to upload to a job website as the file size was too large (would only accept 100kb max). Now it tells me that the .zip file ext will not be accepted by the website and so I tried to change the file name in the hope that this would be accepted. Unfortunately it does not seem to want to upload this and I am a bit stuck on solutions. I cannot reduce the file size by removing some info from the document as you can understand.

i start up my macbook pro (only about two weeks old, bought from apple store) and the grey screen with the apple logo and a little moving cirle underneath comes on and stays on for VERY long and then a message comes up saying there has been a problem so please restart. it does not say what error. i have tried putting in the hardware diagnostic dvd but that obviousl wont run because it doesn't get past the apple logo before giving me this message. it was working five minute before and:
-there was no new drivers installed,
-i have never opened up the macbook
-no new software installed before it stopped working
-i charged it regularly and the battery was on 90+%

I don't know what to do. I just bought a WD Scorpio 320GB 7200 to be installed in my 07 macbook. The operating system is to date with snow leopard on it. But I don't have the snow leopard disc. I have the regular (luckily). Everything was going well. Using disk utility >> I formatted the drive the MAC extended (journaled). I did a restore from Time machine >>> It saw my drive. I picked the restore I wanted. The restore looked good (1 hour process, actually faster). When it said to restart...thats when there's problems. After restart all I see is the "please restart your computer. You can do this by holding down the power button". When I restart, it just keeps coming back to this message like the HD is corrupt. But its not corrupt. I don't know what could of caused it. Could it be something to do with me using 10.5 installation disc to restore a 10.6 backed up system?

I'm frequently getting the problem that: many times the screen goes grey and a message box appears telling me that I have to restart. Often this is preceded by the fans gradually increasing in speed until they are runing at maximum speed. BUT the fans behaving that way is NOT due to overheating. I have to use the restart button to make the Mac restart. I have used reset button to reset the motherboard but that did not cure the problem. Anyone have any ideas about how to cure this problem? I'm running 10.4.9. The mac is a dual 1.8 (June 2004). 1.5GB RAM, two SATA internal HDs (Maxtor), two external firewire HDs (Seagate). All the HDs are less than a year old.

I turned up one day to teach using the Mac Pro and the message on the screen said I had to restart my computer. After many times I gave up. I wrongly thought the hard disk failed as one of the pupils saw some water underneath the Mac from the leaking roof. I checked and formatted the hard drive inside a pc and put Windows on it. After inserting the hard drive and the OSX into the dvd drive proceeded to re-install the software, only to find exactly the same problem as before. What to check next before trying to find someone to fix it.

I installed Leopard about 3 weeks ago and have been very pleased with it; however, since then every so often and when booting up my G5, it shuts off again. I boot again and a small window appears asking me to reset the date and time. Each time this happens I am able to reset the time and date correctly in System Preferences. The computer is about 3 years old so it may be the internal battery and nothing to do with Leopard. Or, could it be a bug in Leopard?
