Intel Mac :: CPU Fan Speeds Up To Max Speed On Either OS X Or Bootcamp?
May 19, 2012
after a while, my iMac starts running its cpu fan at max speed. This occurs on OSX and in Windows. The issue does not seem to be temprerature related. I messured the temperatures via software and even if the cpu is at 30 degrees C , it runs full speed. I can't throttle the fan via SMC Fan Control or something. It just keeps running at full speed. I tried resetting the SMC multiple times without any help. How I tried to reset the SMC:Â
1. Shut down
2. Pull all plugs for 15 secs++
3. Reconnect evertything
4. wait at least 5 more secs
5. boot the systemÂ
Apple Hardware Test reported no problems.Â

i've got a 6 year old 12 inch powerbook G4 1.33 ghz that has internet speeds around 5177kbps, but overall its a bit dated sooo I wanted something a bit more new. I recently picked up a white 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook, HOWEVER the internet wireless speeds on it is dismal in comparison. I'm getting download speeds on average around 405kbps and upload speeds are pretty much non-existant! I've matched both of them to the same internet settings and they are both running 10.5.8. So again I'm stumped and if anybody can give me some idea as to what to do, Id greatly appreciate it!

After installing Windows Vista and running both OSX Leopard and Vista I started noticing a slow down from my Firefox and Safari both. Up until now I have had really good speed and great browsing and torrent downloads using Transmission,,I switched over to Vista and it was fast so I thought "what the heck is going on here", checked out the forums for some advice on different DNS etc, tried all of those with no results so finally called my ISP and they ran a traceroute with me from utilities and the first ping was coming back that I was behind a firewall. Checked the Mac's firewall and turned it off still no luck, made sure Little Snitch was off, still nothing. Thought how is this possible.
ISP(Time Warner Cable-Roadrunner) advised me to take the cable modem back and switch it out for a new one because they said my speeds were definitely not right. Well I decided to check my Vista and sure enough the windows firewall was on,restarted my iMac and used trace route again from network utilities and the firewall was gone. So some how even though I was running Leopard only at that time still with bootcamp somehow the firewall in Windows was bleeding over into OS X. I'm not a computer engineer but I thought they (Vista/OSX Leopard) were running independently from each other in bootcamp. Just wanted to let you guys out there know about this because it seems that some of the quirky issues that you can't find answers to might be attributed to this.

As you can read as the topic title, my shutdown speed is now SLOW after installing Bootcamp. Is Bootcamp the problem? I've tried to repair disk, repair disk permissions and all that stuff. What can be the problem?

I have a 3-year-old-plus iMac8,1 with two GB RAM running OS 10.6.8. Hard drive is 320, with 172 gigs free. It used to be almost full, because i had a lot of video on it, but I transferred a lot to external hard drives. I emptied cache of safari, which improved performance, disabled time machine, disconnected two external hard drives, which has improved things some. I downloaded Tinker Tool, but not sure what to do with it. Sometimes I can hear the hard drive struggling in the background, doing something, not sure. I ran disk utility. Everything seems OK there. Still running slowly.

After many years on PC's, I just got myself a 21.5 iMac. Everthing is great so far except for my ftp downloads. Last week on my pc the download speeds would vary from 2 to 12 Mbs per second depending on conditions. Now on the iMac I am lucky to get .5 to 1 mbs. Could some longtime Mac user share a few tips on network settings to improve my ftp downloads?? I ran the speed test on my Comcast support site... and it showed my download speed as 23Mbs.Â

Returned home this evening to hear my iMac fan making lots of noise, upon checking it was the HDD fan that was operating at 5500rpm. Both other fans were normal. Ambient temperature was 23c and HDD temp was 36c. Normally it's almost silent. It's a late 2009 21.5" base model that has never had an issue in the 23 months that I have owned it. Any idea what the problem is has it gone bad? I restarted but the problem remained I had to shut down and restart to get it back to normal. On another note how do you clean off the dark grey blotchy marks that have appeared at the top of the screen. They don't appear to be on the glass. They started in each corner now they span entire screen top.

My iMac (intel core duo) after a hard drive replacement seems to be running the fans at a high rate of speed. Usually just a few minuets after startup. Before the upgrade they were almost silent and now they are very noticeable. I need to get taken care of or just a result of installing a larget hard drive?Â

Our iMac is 18 months old and three times in the last few months the fan has switched on at full speed as soon as I press the power button. If I disconnect the computer from the power source and turn it upside down before reconnecting and starting it up, the fan will then work normally. Has anyone else had this problem? I guess the answer is to take it to a service centre, but I thought I would see if there is a simple resolution to the problem first.Â

Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

I am interested in adding a webcam to my desktop Imac (power pc)- Isight is no longer available- an option that I found is the Ecamm Image- but apparently it is USB and not firewire and it will only run with high speed usb- how do I know which type is on my computer? I checked system profiler but quite frankly wasn't sure of the designations.. does anyone have any experience with this camera, by the way? is USB 2.0 by definition "High Speed"?

I have a WDS local network at my house. I use a Airport Extreme in my main part of the house and a Airport Express for my back part of the house i.e. the backyard. Now every two weeks or so my internet speed through my Airport Express slows down about half the speed but when I am connected trough the Airport Extreme my speed is normal. I know this because I test my connection very often. Now when I want the Airport Express to get back up to speed I have to unplug, and plug it back in. Then after awhile it starts to slow down again in a time period of two weeks or so.

Have an Extreme base stations and express repeater connected to my DSL services. On my primary iMac connected via ethernet I get 5.25MBps speed. The speed on this computer is always constant. On the remote MacPro I get anywhere from 1.5MBps to 5MPps speed within a half hour of testing.

I have a 27" iMac that I recently took to the Apple Store to have the LCD replaced. When I got my machine back and started it up, the fans kicked on full speed and will not stop...this didn't happen prior to me taking it to repair...it ran nearly silent. My firmware and so forth is all up to date.... I downloaded SMC Fan Control to see what was going on... my computer is operating at 97 degrees farenheit. but my CPU fan is spinning at 4035 rpm. That's crazy over the top. Optical drive fan (with no disk in it) is spinning at 3736rpm...and my HD fan is at 1098rpm (which is probably about right.Â

My iMac has had a sudden decrease in wifi download speed. Upload speed hasn't changed and all othe connected devices still work as normal (the iPad still clocks in at around 30mbps and the iMac used too, now it's at 5.0 mbps). How do I fix the iMac? We have determined that it is not the internet provider and I have exahusted my ideas on how to get the speed back.
