Have an Extreme base stations and express repeater connected to my DSL services. On my primary iMac connected via ethernet I get 5.25MBps speed. The speed on this computer is always constant. On the remote MacPro I get anywhere from 1.5MBps to 5MPps speed within a half hour of testing.
View 1 Repliesso i have a 802.11n airport extreme, but it just seems really slow... i was streaming a movie from a hard drive i have connected to it and it was choppy and it would cut out, i have it set on 802.11n 5ghz only and i have the latest firmware but im not getting very good throughput.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever i open an application both of the fans go to 6000+ rpm in a couple minutes give or take.Strangely web browsing doesn't cause this speed but if a youtube video is played it gets up there fast.Applications such as quicktime and logic gets up there no matter what is played.I have fan control and smcfancontrol, 40GB free, software updated, tried the reset thing (turn off, hold power button, boot), cleared printing operations.The only thing smcfancontrol does for me is it slows down the fans quicker whenever i close all my applications.

I could probably get used to it in the end but it is very annoying and would prefer not to use it. Does anybody know of a tool which allows for constant tracking speed?
View 7 Replies View RelatedDual 2ghz Power PC G5 with Leopard 10.5.8Recently had it in for a repair, not with Apple (that expired a longggg time ago) because it would only turn on intermittently. They fixed this problem, citing bad components and also replaced the broken optical drive. However when they gave it back to me it was incredibly loud, they stated that they had to reconnect a fan and that was probably what caused the power problem in the first place. I'm pretty sure though that I had disconnected it unwittingly about a week after the power problem started when I opened it up to change the battery... believing that may be the problem at the time.

I let it run for awhile and it was still constantly loud. Then I tried rebooting twice and still the same problem. My room is only around mid 60F. Is there some function I'm supposed to turn off? Or did I get a lemon macbook?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI only started noticing my fan running a bit on the fast side this evening after installing the new Safari 4.0.5 update. I looked at iStat Menus for temp and CPU. And I was seeing about 190 degrees F for CPU temp with lid closed running ext display. Also there was a constant usage of the cpu (about 30% User and 20% System). There's not one particular process I can see in Activity Monitor that acting out of the ordinary and using a lot of CPU. Just stuff like coreservicesd, WindowServer, launchd that are shuffling around and using about 1-4% of CPU.I ran repair disk permissions and verify disk. Verify Disk found errors and said I need to repair my Macintosh HD, which I have now done successfully.

i currently backup using just the standard usb drive but its not always plugged in & gets annoying so i want to make it simpler but if the speed isn't there, there is no real point.

I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

I checked system profiler but quite frankly wasn't sure of the designations.. does anyone have any experience with this camera, by the way? is USB 2.0 by definition "High Speed"?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a WDS local network at my house. I use a Airport Extreme in my main part of the house and a Airport Express for my back part of the house i.e. the backyard. Now every two weeks or so my internet speed through my Airport Express slows down about half the speed but when I am connected trough the Airport Extreme my speed is normal. I know this because I test my connection very often. Now when I want the Airport Express to get back up to speed I have to unplug, and plug it back in. Then after awhile it starts to slow down again in a time period of two weeks or so.

I'm using Data Rescue III on a USB powered hard drive with and it's taking a very long time with my iMac G5... It says 42,291 hours remaining (about 5 years) If I did it on my Mac Pro would it go faster, or is the recovery speed based on the hard drive speed?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi have a 1.5 Mbps AT&T DSL connection, and multiple speed tests show a download speed of 1.2 Mbps (and 200 Kbps upload). when i download files, such as software updates from Apple, various podcasts, and even Silverlight from Microshaft, the speed is always between 140 - 160 Kbps. i contacted AT&T, and the rep said it was because of buffering by the servers i was receiving the files from. is this a reasonable explanation? is this an accurate use of the term "buffering"?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have a desktop PC wired into an Airport Extreme and then my macbook pro wirelessly connected. We are both running at the same speed - slower than dial up! I had Time Warner talk me through checking the connection and everything is fine on their end. They said it the problem was airport. I called Apple and was suggested to "change channels" to an odd number instead of using "automatic" through manual set up. Tried that - just as slow. I also upgraded to 7.4.2.

The good news - the 5 Ghz band works great - I get very consistent download speeds of around 12.5 Mbps on my MacBook Pro.
The bad news, its not the same story with the other band. The speed is somewhat inconsistent and generally very slow - usually around 1-2 Mbps on my Macbook pro (although I did do one speedtest that got 8Mbps - def the exception though). On my iPhone 3g and my new iPhone 4, I am yet to get a speed greater than 1Mbps (and its been as low as 220 Kbps) its always slower than the 1.5 Mbps I get over 3g!
Can anyone tell me what the problem might be and how I might go about troubleshooting/fixing it?
For almost the last year I have been using an Airport Extreme on 2.4b/g and and Airport express in my room to extend my wireless network. I also have a usb hdd configured to back up my macbook using time machine. Well I have a new roommate moving in and he has his own extreme and two expresses.
I have some questions on what would be the best way to consolidate our networking devices. I considered us selling our extremes and getting the new time capsule so both of our macs can use 5ghz while my girlfriends dell uses the 2.4.
Is there a noticeable speed difference between time capsule backup vs hard drive to extreme connected via usb?
Does it hurt the computer... If the computer is doing something (watching flash, playing a game) that turns on the fan full speed;Does this hurt the computer? There are a few games I like to play and they turn on the fan at full speed (computer gets hot too, on the bottom.)

If I restart safari I will be able to download close to my 18 Mbps for a little bit but then it will just start to slow down and after about 30 minutes it will be down to about 6 - 8 Mbps.

My wife complains that the internet is slow & can't stream video.Th is computer is wired to a gigbit switch, then to 100 Mbit switch then to the router. I have a 24" iMac connected to same gigibit switch and have no problem with the internet speed.When I try to send a large file between my iMac & the G5, the transfer is slow. I checked in System Profiler and both computers detect the ethernet speed as 1000 Mbit (1gigabit or something like that).
Ideas on how to resolve? Gigbit ethernet cards that will work in the G5?I don't have Airport on the G5.
So I got my first laptop and decided to splurge and got a mac. Now it's great, works great, took me a while to get used to the OS but love my mac now. I use it predominantly for surfing and just basic but am also doing filmmaking. My friend has a macbook pro with 4gb ram and better proccessor, and we used that for film editing, but want to make upgrade mine into one as well (filmmaking laptop). I also may want to use it for gaming (starcraft), photoshop and just a whole bunch of apps and programs. Should I upgrade the ram, get it upgraded for me (get someone to put in the ram) should I even buy ram, is there anything I can do to make a faster processor? Also, my internet is kinda slow, anything I can do to speed it up? Finally, my mac sometimes lags when there's a lot off apps open so I was thinking of upgrading it. I don't have much of a budget (probably not even a 100) so I need something cheap, but don't want shotty second hand stuff. How much can I add, and what else can I do? On another note, Ive been using firefox as my default browser and have added a whole bunch off addons, any other programs I should get for firefox OR any programs I should get for my mac?

Recently I have been trying to burn some video_ts files ripped with MacTheRipper on to 8x Memorex DL DVD +R. I think the problem here is that my drive is only built to handle 4x speeds. I have tried decreasing the speeds in Toast this however has no effect and I still receive a drive error. I have also tried to transform the video_ts folder into multiple different types of disc images and burn them to the DL DVD from the disk utility function. The error I get from here is also a drive error

I'm trying to run an old Tiger Woods golf game on it. When I put in the CD it says the game requires a bus speed of 500 MHz and at least 1 MB of disk space free and the game will not run.
Being brand new, the Mac has almost all of it's memory space available and the speed required (500MHz) for the game is well below the bus speed of my computer (1.07GHz). Any ideas why the game won't run?
When downloading small files online they will download through Speed Download. Before I installed Speed Download it would just download through the regular downloading client. How do I change it back to using the regular one as standard? I use firefox btw

Would wiping the HD and restoring from TM using the Snow Leopard disk help at all, or would I get the same thing and have just wasted my time?
