Intel Mac :: Way To Speed It Up

Feb 21, 2012

I have a 3-year-old-plus iMac8,1 with two GB RAM running OS 10.6.8. Hard drive is 320, with 172 gigs free. It used to be almost full, because i had a lot of video on it, but I transferred a lot to external hard drives. I emptied cache of safari, which improved performance, disabled time machine, disconnected two external hard drives, which has improved things some. I downloaded Tinker Tool, but not sure what to do with it. Sometimes I can hear the hard drive struggling in the background, doing something, not sure. I ran disk utility. Everything seems OK there. Still running slowly.

Intel Mac :: FTP Download Speed Has Decreased?

May 17, 2012

After many years  on PC's, I just got myself a 21.5 iMac.  Everthing is great so far except for my ftp downloads. Last week on my pc the download speeds would vary from 2 to 12 Mbs per second depending on conditions.  Now on the iMac I am lucky to get .5 to 1 mbs.  Could some longtime Mac user share a few tips on network settings to improve my ftp downloads??  I ran the speed test on my Comcast support site... and it showed my download speed as 23Mbs.

Intel Mac :: CPU Fan Speeds Up To Max Speed On Either OS X Or Bootcamp?

May 19, 2012

after a while, my iMac starts running its cpu fan at max speed. This occurs on OSX and in Windows. The issue does not seem to be temprerature related. I messured the temperatures via software and even if the cpu is at 30 degrees C , it runs full speed. I can't throttle the fan via SMC Fan Control or something. It just keeps running at full speed. I tried resetting the SMC multiple times without any help. How I tried to reset the SMC:

1. Shut down

2. Pull all plugs for 15 secs++

3. Reconnect evertything

4. wait at least 5 more secs

5. boot the system

Apple Hardware Test reported no problems.

Intel Mac :: HDD Fan Speed High - Operating At 5500 Rpm

Feb 23, 2012

Returned home this evening to hear my iMac fan making lots of noise, upon checking it was the HDD fan that was operating at 5500rpm. Both other fans were normal. Ambient temperature was 23c and HDD temp was 36c. Normally it's almost silent. It's a late 2009 21.5" base model that has never had an issue in the 23 months that I have owned it. Any idea what the problem is has it gone bad? I restarted but the problem remained I had to shut down and restart to get it back to normal. On another note how do you clean off the dark grey blotchy marks that have appeared at the top of the screen. They don't appear to be on the glass. They started in each corner now they span entire screen top.

My iMac (intel core duo) after a hard drive replacement seems to be running the fans at a high rate of speed.  Usually just a few minuets after startup. Before the upgrade they were almost silent and now they are very noticeable. I need to get taken care of or just a result of installing a larget hard drive?

Intel Mac :: Fan Runs At Full Speed On Start Up Of It?

Jun 7, 2012

Our iMac is 18 months old and three times in the last few months the fan has switched on at full speed as soon as I press the power button.  If I disconnect the computer from the power source and turn it upside down before reconnecting and starting it up, the fan will then work normally.  Has anyone else had this problem? I guess the answer is to take it to a service centre, but I thought I would see if there is a simple resolution to the problem first.

MacBook Pro :: WIFI Downloading Speed Very Slow / Speed Test Shows It Is Fast

Apr 30, 2009

Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

I have a WDS local network at my house. I use a Airport Extreme in my main part of the house and a Airport Express for my back part of the house i.e. the backyard. Now every two weeks or so my internet speed through my Airport Express slows down about half the speed but when I am connected trough the Airport Extreme my speed is normal. I know this because I test my connection very often. Now when I want the Airport Express to get back up to speed I have to unplug, and plug it back in. Then after awhile it starts to slow down again in a time period of two weeks or so.

Intel Mac :: Fan At Full Speed After Apple Store Repair?

That's crazy over the top. Optical drive fan (with no disk in it) is spinning at 3736rpm...and my HD fan is at 1098rpm (which is probably about right.

Intel Mac :: AirPort Speed Slows To A Crawl After 5min?

All the other wifi devices in my house (ipad, laptops) do not have this problem at all so it must be the imac and not the connection. I'm running the latest version of Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Intel Mac :: Poor WiFi Speed On It But Excellent With IPhone 4S?

Jun 12, 2012

I've recently upgraded my internet speeds through my ISP to have 50Mbps download and 2Mbps upload.  I use my 2TB Time Capsule as a router as it has by far provided the best connectivity than any other router.  I run dual network - connect my iPhone 4S through standard network and my iMac through 5GHz network.  Since upgrading my speed, I have noticed that my iMac speeds vary greatly, but most of the time I'm struggling to get more than 10Mbps download, however on my iPhone I easily achieve almost 40Mbps.  I have tried different browsers, and ensured all other applications are closed and even switched the iMac (2009 i7 quad core) to the standard network.  At that point I noticed a slight increase in speed but it was short lived.

I am stumped on what to try next.  Does anyone have ideas? The iMac is a little hot, but nothing that isn't normal so I can't put it down to heat or anything. I recently installed Windows 7 through bootcamp but didn't expect that to impact anything, however it was around a SIMILAR time that I noticed issues, as previously I was getting a consistent connection of 20Mbps before I upgraded.

IMac (Intel) :: Fan Runs Full Speed On Shut Down

Aug 27, 2014

My iMac runs perfectly fine; more or less as it did when it was new. In OS X, when I shut down the computer, the fan runs at full speed indefinitely, unless I unplug it or boot back up.  When running, the fan is perfectly normal (increases speed a bit when doing something taxing).  I've never heard it at full speed before until this started happening.  After following the SMC reset procedure with no luck (I'd like to add that the SMC reset only says it relates to fan problems when the computer is ON), I searched a bit and noticed there are one or two cases where a problem like mine was believed to be a motherboard issue, and therefore a costly fix.

However, here's the fun part. When booted into Windows 8.1, shutting down the iMac does not cause this issue to occur.  It stays silent, as it should, even if I disconnect then reconnect the power.  This leads me to believe it's unlikely to be a motherboard issue.  However I've wiped, restored, and reinstalled fresh copies of Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Windows 8.1, and the result is still the same: if I don't want to have to unplug it from the wall, then I have to use Windows to shut it down.

So then, my questions are these:

-What is the difference between shutting down from OS X and shutting down from Windows?

-Is an operating system allowed/able to touch BIOS settings?

-Is it possible to still be a hardware problem, given this difference?

My default OS is OS X, and it makes no difference if I change that to Windows.  I also did a PRAM reset, even though that has nothing to do with fans...
