Hardware :: The Ability To Program To Keys To The One Button?

Jan 21, 2009

The following is rather convoluted but I don't know how to explain my rather odd problem adequately in a simpler way.

So I chose this mouse largely because it have the programable buttons, and I programed the two buttons on the side by my thumb to be the command button, so I can therefore open things in a new tab when surfing the wet without having to have a hand on the key board the whole time.

Here's where the problem arises.

It has the ability to program to keys to the one button. i.e. command and s (with this combo you can quickly save things).

I don't want the second button programed, so I left it blank, but now whenever I click the button the whole page I'm viewing gets highlighted for some reason. If I click the link I wanted, it opens in a new tab, no hassle. The the original tab is highlighted blue, and I then have to a regular mouse click to get rid of it.

Now I know it's not much to do a regular mouse click, but I shouldn't have to. Also it's distracting having the whole page turn blue every-time.

OS X :: Left Command Button Not Working With Bottom Row Of Keys

Aug 26, 2010

Running OS X 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro that's roughly 2 years old (maybe a little more). About a week ago I noticed that I was unable to copy/paste/undo/cut. Thought it was a total command key failure at first but other shortcut functionality is intact (cmd+t/cmd+w etc). So I've isolated the problem to the left cmd key and the bottom row of my keyboard. Separately they work just fine, but they refuse to work together.

OS X :: How To Program Function Keys

Aug 31, 2007

I'm switching from a PC to a Mac. I have a PC utility called "My Function Keys" that allows me to "program" the function keys to do a combination of keystrokes. For example, I can set up F9 to do a copy and F10 to do a paste, so I don't have to do the Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V, or I can set up F2 to type my address, etc. Is there a similar utility for the Mac? I did find some information at this link: [URL]. Which states: iBook: How Programmable Function Keys Work. This article describes the programmable function key operation for iBook and the PowerBook (FireWire) computers. The programmable function keys were created to help simplify common, everyday tasks performed on the computer.

You can use these keys to open a browser, an email application, or any other frequently used application or server by pressing a single key. To set up a programmable function key, open the Keyboard control panel. Or, if the keys have not been programmed yet, simply pressing one of them brings up a dialog box that leads you to the Keyboard control panel. Apple has preprogrammed F1 through F6 with such common control functions as screen brightness, speaker volume, and so on. F7 through F12 can be programmed for your personal choices. To help you identify what the function keys were programmed to do, Apple includes with iBook a variety of durable stickers with preselected icons. Once the keys are programmed, you can select the stickers that will best remind you of the assigned functions.

Note: The stickers should not be placed on the keycap itself, rather above them on the iBook case. To remove the sticker, use a fingernail or other non-abrasive tool to remove them and avoid scratching the plastics. The function keys F1 through F12 can be easily reset to have primary functionality. Simply open the Keyboard control panel and select Options. Then check the box that says Use F1 through F12 as Function keys. Note: Programmable function keys are not a feature of Mac OS X 10.0. So, it appears the iBook will do what I'm looking for, but not the iMac!

MacBook :: Removing Keys From New (space Bar - Arrow - Shift Button And 2 Others)?

Feb 15, 2009

Last night a friend of mine spilt a very small amount of soda onto my macbook. I immediately wiped it off and powered down the computer. Today, when I turned the computer back on, everything works fine, however, a few of the keys are sticky (the space bar, arrow keys, shift button, and 2 others). Is there anyway to remove these keys to try to clean them? This is the current generation Macbook.

OS X :: Closing A WD Button Manager Program?

Apr 9, 2010

I have a Macbook that has been running slow for the last 2 days.

I scouted the net and ended up finding out I should check my Activity Monitor, which I did. There is a "WD Button Manager" that will flash up for a second and then disappear . It says that it is using 96% of my CPU.

(Does this explain why my mac is slow? Even as I type this there is a delay for a second and then the words appear!)

I think its for a Western Digital external HD I had a while back but I never use now.

So i tried to find the program and did, I tried to drop it in the trash and delete it but it gives me the message, cant trash because it is open.

But I cant open it when I click on the icon, it opens omnioutliner? (no idea what this program does!)

IMac :: System Ability To Run Fine For Gaming?

Dec 9, 2010

For the longest time (since 1998) I have built my own PC's for gaming. I finally decided to try a Mac for the first time two weeks ago. I wont go back. I have the 1499 3.2 ghz core i3 21.5" model and I am having a blast. This is what computing should be like. I play World of Warcraft on mine and enjoy it. I am selling the gaming PC I just gave my wife to get her a 3.02 ghz core i3 1199 model iMac with the ATI 4670 at 256mb, 4 gigs of ram.

I am thinking this should be able to run World of Warcraft ok. Not expecting the settings maxed, more on fair or good. I am just looking for a good playing experience. The 1199 is more in the budget for what we can do. Other than that it will be used for basic writing and email surfing. I know the 4670 is not much by todays standards but with a i3 in a mac I am thinking it should run fine, and work for at least 4 or so years down the road.

MacBook Pro :: Losing Ability To Use Two External Monitors

Jun 18, 2010

The hardest thing moving away from my 2.4MBP was losing the ability to use two external monitors. Previously I'd been using a Matrox Digital TrippleHead2Go, driving 2 1600x1200 SyncMaster 214T. So I was pretty upset to suddenly be part of the 'Display Port' nightmare that Apple have inflicted upon us. And not just display port, but Mini display port. Anyway, I was glad to see last week that Matrox had everything back in stock again to finally resolve this issue. 'DualHead2Go DP Edition' sounded like the perfect solution, well almost... Of course I needed a mini DP to DP cable on the input side, and since most sensible monitors still use DVI, I needed 2 DP to DVI connector cables.

2 days later the package arrived. My first disappointment was the cables, 70EUR for three 20cm cables. Wow, that's being really mean. Fortunately the kit includes a DP->DP cable of a bit more reasonable length (50cm?) which allowed me to just get the box under the desk. Although of course the 20cm output DP->DVI cables were never going to reach 2 monitors, no matter how I balanced the box. So 2 DVI->DVI cables later and the whole thing was connected. On the software side I didn't bother with the included CD since I wanted to ensure I had the latest drivers - (running on firmware 1.0.38). The software itself was better than my last experience of a head2go product, at least this time I didn't need a windows machine to configure the device! But I did spend some time double checking the specs that my GT330M was actually supported. It seemed only to offer me 800 or 1024 based display resolution. In the end I picked 1024 anyway just to try it, this seemed to trigger the head2go into detecting my actual monitors! although it still took quite some clicking back and forth between the Apple display settings (eventually set to 3200x1200), and the Matrox GXM software.

Then, as additional records come in from various providers, and I repeat the process, I would hope to have the ability to combine all the records if need be sort the entire set of records by date, or if I choose to have them sort by provider. I know it would require some manual tagging but overall I think would save a great deal of time. I cant find a single program that will enable me to do this. I'm looking to have the ability to quickly rearrange the pages of a pdf file based on tags or labels that I add.

OS X :: Ability To Transfer Files From Backup Drive To New System?

May 15, 2010

I've been a Mac user for about 2 years now. It's a great OS. I currently have a 2008 (quad-core) Mac Pro that I will be selling to a friend. I've been saving up some money and will be buying an iMac (with money from Mac Pro) and a Gaming PC with my saved money. My Mac Pro currently has three drives in it - a 230GB drive with the OS, Apps, Music, etc; a 500GB drive with Movies, Photos, etc; and another 500GB drive with Windows 7 and games.

I have all my Mac files backed up onto a 1.5TB external drive (of which I have less than 1TB filed). My question is about file transferring. Will I be able to transfer the files from my backup Mac Pro drive to the new iMac? It has a 1TB drive so space isn't a problem. I'm just kinda worried about how the files will be transferred since it was copied from two drives and is going to be copied back onto a single drive.
