OS X :: Customizing Ability For Gesture Commands?
Jan 8, 2009
Any way to customize gesture commands? For instance, I would like to be able to 4 finger swipe left/right and flow through my Spaces. Anybody? If not now, should we expect this customization ability in the future?

I haven't found much detail on this. What does the new 3 finger gesture do?

If you all knew about this before then sorry - I just haven't seen any mention of it anywhere but it definitely works. It may only be a program specific thing cos it doesn't work in mail or itunes but in iWork it jumps a page at a time and in firefox it skips to the bottom of the page. I find it very useful when browsing so I thought I'd let you know. You put three fingers down (I use my 3 middle) and just scroll with the outside 2 leaving your middle finger still. It feels a bit awkward at first but once I got used to it it was fine.

I just went to the mozilla site and left some feedback for firefox requesting the 3 finger swipe gesture to be implemented, like in safari. Although, my single request probably wont do much, maybe others have and I'm contributing. Anyway, i thought i should post the link here, and anyone that could be bothered could fill it out as well.. the more people we get to send it, the more likely they developers will implement it

Currently I've installed a new Promethean ActivBoard 500 series and have been using it with a regular PC. It works fine, enabling all gesture controls with my fingers. When I install a Mac to this board, I can't seem to use gesture controls to manipulate my screen.I tried also with a OSX Lion Mac Book Pro and got same results.

I'm trying the new Safari and I love the support for the pinch gesture (coming to Firefox in the next version apparently). Anyhow, I find it difficult to control how quickly the page zooms. Is there any setting to slow the zoom down, i.e. make it less sensitive?

In a Finder window, if I'm looking for photos (for example) and I click on the thumbnail view, I cannot enlarge the thumbnails like I used to with the pinch gesture. Has this been disabled in Lion 10.7? Is there a way to allow it again? The 'Pinch to Zoom' gesture has been allowed in System preferences and it works with every application, just not in a Finder window.

From time to time, as I am composing a message using Gmail in Safari, the email screen "freezes." I cannot continue to type, copy or paste, or do anything else to manipulate the screen; it is as if the page has become an image. I speculate that this is due to some inadvertant "gesture" on my part, as at other times my Safari screen will sometimes zoom in and out unaccountably, presumably because my track pad senses two fingers pinching instead of scrolling. This latter problem is very annoying, but I attribute it to my own clumsiness. The former problem of the screen freeze is more than annoying, as it requires me to completely redo a sometimes lengthy email. Is there a gesture that causes a screen to be captured as an image?

Apple's Magic Trackpad acts just like a bigger version of the multi-touch trackpads found on the company's notebook computers, though it does include one new, unique gesture for moving windows. The customizable device can have certain features enabled or disabled through software, including options such as tap-to-click. Like the trackpad on a current MacBook or MacBook Pro, the entire surface can be pushed for a physical click as well.According to Engadget, the hardware also comes with one exclusive new feature: a three-finger gesture that allows users to drag windows around quickly.
Much like can already be done on a Mac desktop via the Magic Mouse, the Magic Trackpad offers standard multi-touch gestures, including two-finger scrolling, pinch to zoom, rotate, and three-finger swiping. Users can also invoke Expose or switch between applications by using four fingers, all capabilities previously found on the company's notebook multi-touch trackpads. In the Magic Trackpad's software settings, users can enable or disable tap to click, dragging, drag lock, a localized secondary click (such as tapping in a specific corner of the trackpad). Other features include inertia-based scrolling, screen zoom, pinch to open and close, and the aforementioned new three-finger dragging."It's made with smooth, wear-resistant glass that feels great to the touch," Apple said. "And it?s nearly 80 percent larger than the built-in trackpad on the MacBook Pro, giving you plenty of room to perform gestures. Because the entire surface of Magic Trackpad is a button, you can click on objects just as you would using a traditional mouse. And Magic Trackpad sits at the same height and angle as the Apple Wireless Keyboard, so you can go from trackpad to keyboard in one seamless motion."
The $69 wireless device works with any Bluetooth-enabled Mac, and can be connected up to 33 feet away. The device also detects periods of inactivity to conserve battery life, and has a dedicated on-off switch. Apple has said that the device will operate for "months at a time" without the need to replace its AA batteries.
In addition to two AA batteries -- which are included, and which Apple now sells in a rechargeable form -- the new Magic Trackpad requires users to have a Bluetooth-enabled Mac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and the latest software update.

I've had my Magic Mouse since last thursday (29th Oct) and i've noticed the 2 finger swipe gesture no longer actually functions. I'm trying it in Safari (with history available to swipe through) and its definately enabled in the system preferences.
Instead of doing the swipe gesture it now just scrolls left and right. Its also not a case of positioning my fingers wrong as it used to work around 2 days ago and now it definitely no longer works.
I'm going to re-pair it a few times and replace the batteries but if it doesnt magically come back I will be replacing it.Just curious if anyone else who has had their magic mouse for this long has lost this gesture too?

So, to start off I have been attempting to try and learn to use CandyBar by myself.. I've done a pretty good job. I was just wondering how people customize their docks so well. I download most of my icons from iconfactory, although really the only one I liked was "Agua Onyx" but it didn't come with the ones of apps like firefox, iTunes, etc.

Well 2 things came into my mind that would make finder better:
1) A path bar that would be clickable; clicking a folder to get you to it instead of right-clicking it and chosing open
2) Tabs...

I know you can simply drag the whole bar down from the address bar into the dock, thus creating an icon, but is it possible to customize the image of the icon?

Having just installed a fresh copy of Win7 (again) and getting a real good look at it, I find the file management to be utterly appalling compared to OSX. The control panel is a big mess with everything ordered hapazardly (why couldn't MS borrow from Apple's system preferences??). The Explorer is a joke. I want my directory hierarchies to expand in columnar format like it does in the finder. Also, when I drag files from one explorer window to another explorer window, the target explorer window should get the primary focus when I hover over it but it doesn't. I have to actually alt-tab my way to do that (in the non-sensical way Win7 does it). Start Menu and task bar just doesn't compare to the dock. Does anyone know of any enhancements to Win7 that can mimmick the behavior of OSX's finder, add a dock and any other important refinements to this rather bloated and badly designed OS?

I'm a long - very long - time user of Firefox but would like to switch to Safari as FF seems to suck lots of CPU on my Mac (in fact it seems to do so on any *nix OS ) but there's one thing that I can't get used to, which is the Close Tab button being on the left of the tabs in Safari whereas it's on the right in FF.
OK, so there's nothing inherently better about them being on the right, it's just that I've got so used to it that I can't seem to break the habit of clicking over to the left-hand side of a tab when i select it which of course in Safari closes the damn thing. What makes it even more annoying is that there doesn't appear to be a Re-open Last Closed Tab command in Safari as there is in FF (Cmd-Shift-T).
Is there an undocumented command-line option to switch the close buttons to the right-hand side and/or a Re-open Last Closed Tab command?

How do I change the background fill on the login screen window from solid to transparent or translucent?
Reason is cosmetic ... solid window is screen centered and blocks too much of HD wallpaper.

I am new to the Mac OS world as I only got a mac one week ago. I'm learning lots of new stuff everyday but can't seem to figure out how to make my applications show up at the Guest Account Dock or even at the Applications folder for that matter. I got Microsoft Office for Mac and it works fine and all on my User account (admin) but i cant make it show up at the applications folder or at the dock so when someone borrows my laptop for some office editing they have to be logged on my account. Is there a way to customize the applications that show up on Guest Accounts?

I have only recently switched to Mac and was looking for a browser that had a few more options to suit my needs than safari (tried pimp my safari) and so downloaded FireFox and I love the customize google app or plug in. It's brilliant. But as FireFox doesn't use keychain (what are the disadvantages of this) I was wondering if anyone knew of an app or plug in that can customize google for safari in the same way? How I can add buttons to the toolbar. The supplied toolbar is pretty limiting. How I can improve my safari so that I can keep everything integrated or will I have to stick with FireFox?
