Hardware :: Speed Difference Between Time Capsule Backup Versus Hard Drive To Extreme Connected Via Usb?

Mar 16, 2009

For almost the last year I have been using an Airport Extreme on 2.4b/g and and Airport express in my room to extend my wireless network. I also have a usb hdd configured to back up my macbook using time machine. Well I have a new roommate moving in and he has his own extreme and two expresses.

I have some questions on what would be the best way to consolidate our networking devices. I considered us selling our extremes and getting the new time capsule so both of our macs can use 5ghz while my girlfriends dell uses the 2.4.

Is there a noticeable speed difference between time capsule backup vs hard drive to extreme connected via usb?

Hardware :: Time Capsule Versus AEBS With USB Hard Drive

I'm wondering if there's any disadvantage to buying an AEBS and a USB hard drive vs. buying a Time Capsule. I want to use it primarily for Time Machine, and I like the idea of expandability when the backup drive is full

Hardware :: Time Capsule Versus Airport Extreme Dual Band Base/ext

Jul 4, 2009

I just bought a new Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme. Both are the newfangled dual-band type. At the moment the AEX is the main base station, connected to my DSL modem in the Living Room. The TC extends the AEX network and is in my office.

The instructions suggest the TC should not be a network client and rather be the main base station, and to make the AEX extend the network. How much difference will there be in Time Machine performance between the two topologies?

I would really prefer having the TC in my office, so I can attach via gigabit ethernet to the TC when I'm working there with my MBP. I cannot move the DSL modem to my office since I don't have a phone line there (it's really an upstairs bedroom).

Hardware :: Backup Time Machine Over Network / Connected External Hard Drive?

Jul 21, 2010

I'm trying to backup the contents of my MacBook Pro wirelessly to an external hard drive that is connected to a Mac Mini in my living room. All the tutorials I've read say to create a sparsebundle file with the same name as the one that's found in the folder of your Time Machine backup.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Backup Speed When It's Not The Router?

Nov 8, 2009

I have a new Time Capsule which I have connected to my existing Modem/Router as an ethernet device, so it is not running as the router itself. However I have set it up to run its own wireless network.

I am trying to do the first backup of my mac mini, with attached external hard drive which has my iTunes library. The size of the backup is about 380gb. I connected the mac mini to the Time Capsule wireless network, and started the backup, but is running quite slowly, at about 5gb per hour. So the full backup will take about 3 or 4 days at this rate. The initial backup of my MacBook Pro (about 18gb) took 2 or 3 hours, so a similar sort of speed. I've disabled Time Machine on the Macbook pro for the time being, until I get the mac mini sorted out.

I understand a backup over ethernet would be quicker, but the time capsule is not the network router, so if I just connect an ethernet cable from the mac mini to the time capsule, is that going to work?

Is my only option to use the Time Capsule as router? Or is there anything else I can try?

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Speed - Noticeable Difference

Oct 24, 2009

I know this topic has been gone over several times, but I'm still having trouble deciding on which to get in a new 15", 2.8Ghz MBP - 5400/500GB, or 7200rpm/320GB (or 500, really). I'll be using the machine largely for graphic design, but also for various other tasks as my main computer. I've heard the faster drive IS a noticeable difference, but it also drains battery life and runs hot. There doesn't seem to be a consensus on this anywhere. Is the 7200 worth it?

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Broken By Connected Hard Drive

Oct 5, 2010

my brand new dual-band Airport Extreme has been working great for the last 2 weeks since I bought it. Today I connected an external hard drive (WD Passport 500Gb) via a USB hub, and it was working great for a few Gb of file transfers.

About an hour later, I transferred another file, and the Airport ceased to work halfway through; I went to check and the Airport was completely dead. No lights, hard reset does nothing.

Hardware :: Can Time Capsule Be Connected Via Ethernet To An External Drive

Feb 3, 2009

Just got the time capsule, going to use it for wireless time machine back ups of my laptop. I would also like to connect an external drive to the time capsule for movies and audio files that are too big for my laptop.

I notice if I connect my owc 7200 rpm external drive via the USB port to the time capsule, things are a bit sluggish when I access movie/audio files over the wireless...What if I purchased an external drive with an ethernet port? would it work if I plugged it into the time capsule? and if so would there be a speed increase?

OS X :: Spotlight Search String - Time Capsule Connected Drive?

Oct 13, 2009

A while back I switched a external drive from being plugged directly into the USB port of my mac to being plugged into the USB port of a Time Capsule, now accessed via wireless network. When the disk was plugged directly to computer Spotlight would find files with the search string contained within the body of the document. Now it doesn't do this (it will only find file names). Is this standard behavior of disks connected to a Time Capsule or am I missing something?

Hardware :: How To Share The Hard Drive Connected To Airport Extreme With Other Family Members

I have an airport extreme with a 1tb drive connected to it that my entire family connects to (4 people).

I installed the latest AirPort driver that allows the hard drive to be accessed over the internet which works great.

The problem is that it obviously only works with my user account since I linked it with my MobileMe user name. Is there any way to allow my other family members access to the drive over the internet, short of them going into MobileMe in system preferences and logging in as my MobileMe account?

Hardware :: Can Time Machine Backup External Drive Attached To Time Capsule?

Mar 11, 2009

I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.

Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.

Hardware :: Time Capsule And USB External Drive For Backup And Network Use?

Jun 21, 2009

I know I can add an external 1 GB drive to my time capsule, and have time machine do backups on that specific drive. If I do so, can I still use the internal 500 GB drive of my time capsule for network uses? or Time Capsule is restricted in a way that it can either use the internal harddrive, or an external USB one, but not both at the same time (one for backups only, the other for a network storage drive).

Hardware :: Cloning Time Capsule Drive And Increase Backup Volume?

Jun 3, 2010

I have a time Capsule that is nearly filled. It is giving me error messages each night it tries to backup saying that there is too much on my computer to backup. So, I went out and bought a 4TB Western Digital external drive. I want to copy all the data from the time capsule onto the new hard drive (so I don't loose any of my older backups) and then have the time capsule use that same WD drive as my new backup. I have seen there are ways to copy from time machine drives to new external USB drives, but I was under the impression time machine uses a different kind of backup method than a time capsule.

Is that true? Can someone point me to a place that explains how exactly I would copy the drive in the time capsule. (I understand I need to use Disk Utility, but I cant get the TC drive to show up in that program). Also, is there a way to instruct time capsule to stop using its own internal drive and use the drive connected to its USB for the backups? I think Apple's answer is no, but I dont know if thats really the case or not.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Hard Drive Very Slowly Drive Filling Up

I have a 500GB Time Capsule, and very slowly my drive is filling up, and that's only with one Mac (I think there's about 25GB left - and no other stuff is on it except for the TM backup). I was wondering if there was a way to add an external drive into the Time Capsule via USB and extend the overall capacity, as I only seem to be able to choose it as a separate backup location. Obviously I don't want to have to buy a bigger USB HD when I'm running low on space. Also, I'm gonna be getting an iMac (As soon as Apple decides to announce new ones!)

Hardware :: What USB Hard Drive For Time Capsule

Apr 28, 2009

I'm looking to add a 1TB hard drive to my Time Capsule so I can have wireless access to the files for my iMac, MBA and Dell (XP). I use the TC hard drive for time machine for my two macs, so this hard drive would be exclusively for storing files that I don't want to keep on my computer. I have a new baby and a camcorder which means there are GBs of files added every day. I was wondering what other people are using for a network hard drive and if they are happy with them. Also, I'm assuming a USB HD to the Time Capsule USB port is a better option (faster and more stable) than a true network hard drive (ethernet port).
