Mac :: Constant CPU Usage & High Fans Speed Temp On Black Santa Rosa MacBook
Mar 11, 2010
I only started noticing my fan running a bit on the fast side this evening after installing the new Safari 4.0.5 update. I looked at iStat Menus for temp and CPU. And I was seeing about 190 degrees F for CPU temp with lid closed running ext display. Also there was a constant usage of the cpu (about 30% User and 20% System). There's not one particular process I can see in Activity Monitor that acting out of the ordinary and using a lot of CPU. Just stuff like coreservicesd, WindowServer, launchd that are shuffling around and using about 1-4% of CPU.I ran repair disk permissions and verify disk. Verify Disk found errors and said I need to repair my Macintosh HD, which I have now done successfully.

Does it hurt the computer... If the computer is doing something (watching flash, playing a game) that turns on the fan full speed;Does this hurt the computer? There are a few games I like to play and they turn on the fan at full speed (computer gets hot too, on the bottom.)

I've recently installed a Crucial M500 512 GB SSD into my 21.5" 2011 iMac. I've done this to quite a few iMacs, and am well aware that some have a temperature sensor on the factory-installed hard drive. This one, however, did not, and now that the SSD is installed, I'm getting constantly running fans.Â
The fans run whether it's booted from the internal SSD, an external FireWire HD, or even if it's sitting in Target Disk Mode or on the Boot Options screen, so I feel like it's hardware-related.Â

Whenever i open an application both of the fans go to 6000+ rpm in a couple minutes give or take.Strangely web browsing doesn't cause this speed but if a youtube video is played it gets up there fast.Applications such as quicktime and logic gets up there no matter what is played.I have fan control and smcfancontrol, 40GB free, software updated, tried the reset thing (turn off, hold power button, boot), cleared printing operations. The only thing smcfancontrol does for me is it slows down the fans quicker whenever i close all my applications.

I am a long-time Windows user who is now finally coming to her senses and wants to buy a Mac. I'm a grad student, I don't play computer games, but I need a fairly light notebook that will last me at least two years without feeling obsolete (like my current Dell). Right now I'm looking at the 2.4 ghz, 160 gig HD Macbook. Now that the MB's Intel chips are in their 4th generation, is it safe to say that something superior to the Core Duo Santa Rosa will be coming out soon? Of course I realize that as soon as you buy new technology, it will be out of date, but I'm curious if the Santa Rosa is the end of the line, so to speak, for the Core Duo, or not.Any other recommendations about making the switch from Windows to Leopard, as well as buying tips, would be much appreciated. Also, I've heard conflicting reports of Office 2008 for the Mac. Are people mostly happy with it?

I would like to change the hard drive of my MacBook Santa Rosa 13" 2.2 GHz.I would like to go fo an SSD Drive. I checked and find out that the kingston have got a good price. Â There is something that is quite annoying me though, they propose model with Serial ATA III and serial ATA II. I tought Serial ATA III was compatible with older technology. So my questions are: Why do they propose two versions (especially when the SATA II version is more expensive) ?Will a SATA III SSD will work in my old macbook ? any idea of the perf ?Â

I just bought the macbook 13" (white casing) today and the first thing I noticed when I turned it on was the fan, it was extremely loud!! I let it run for awhile and it was still constantly loud. Then I tried rebooting twice and still the same problem. My room is only around mid 60F. Is there some function I'm supposed to turn off? Or did I get a lemon macbook?

I have a MacBook Pro (Santa Rosa) with a 120GB hard drive. I would like to replace it myself with a 500GB drive. I know that in the desktop PC world certain BIOS and motherboards only support certain size drives. Is this true for Macs? I also read a comment by someone on another site stating his 500GB drive was a little thicker than the original drive in his MacBook Pro.

Whilst being supported under the last BC drivers available with Leopard Install DVD 10.5.6, Apple has decided that there is no need for any further support for Windows x64 on the Macbooks and Macbooks Pro prior to 2008. So no HFS+ read support in Windows for us, then. Since Microsoft has dumped i386 for its server line and it is pretty clear that Windows 7 is the last 32 bit release from Microsoft, it makes sense to install the 64 bit version now for easier upgrading in the future. Plus you actually get to use the 4GB of ram installed in your machines.
So why this retrograde step Apple, particularly as you were trumpeting the virtues of 64 bit processing in your own latest offering?

I have a late 2007 macbook pro and recently the fans have been going at extremely high speeds without the MBP being hot at all. I have SMCFanControl and iStat Pro and both of them said my MBP's temperature was around 55C though the fans were going between 4000 and 6000 RPM, I also checked the activity monitor for high CPU usage but nothing high there. I turned my MBP off for 5 minutes with a fan blowing on it just incase it was hot but when I turned it back on the fans immediately jumped back up to 6000 RPM. They're back to normal now but I assume it will happen again. Anyone know what's wrong?

I have a White MacBook (13-inch Early 2008 model A1181) Penryn 2.4Ghz. The current logic board in there is Apple part# 820-2279-A. Is a late 2007 Santa Rosa 2.2Ghz board (with the same part number 820-2279-A) a direct swap for the Penryn board?

I know there are a ton of questions already about Windows 7 but its hard to find answers based on a specific model.
So I was just wondering... Those of you who have the Santa Rosa MacBook Pro (June 2007 model)... Have you successfully installed Windows 7 RC via Bootcamp? Easy/hard? What works and what doesn't? 32 bit or 64 bit?

My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.

Dual 2ghz Power PC G5 with Leopard 10.5.8Recently had it in for a repair, not with Apple (that expired a longggg time ago) because it would only turn on intermittently. They fixed this problem, citing bad components and also replaced the broken optical drive. However when they gave it back to me it was incredibly loud, they stated that they had to reconnect a fan and that was probably what caused the power problem in the first place. I'm pretty sure though that I had disconnected it unwittingly about a week after the power problem started when I opened it up to change the battery... believing that may be the problem at the time.

My Macbook Pro (13", early 2011, Core i5 @ 2.3) started to behave weird, its fan (only the exhaust one, since it's a 13" Macbook Pro with the Intel HD integrated graphics) is running at top speed (6200-6208 rpms) with no reason at all. No system processes consuming high CPU, just idling. There's a twist to this issue, though. It only does it when I open the lid more than 90 degrees. If I get it back the fan returns to normal functioning. What I did:checked the temperature sensor values, they are finechecked for crazy background tasks, there are none, CPU usage is at max 7%it does the same thing even in safe modereset PRAMreset SMCreinstalled OS X (Lion). Updated to 10.7.4searched every discussion I could find on this matter.
The difference between this issue and others I encountered along the way is the lid opening thing.Does anyone know if getting the lid past the 90 degree mark triggers anything? The other theory I have is that there's some dust blocking the intake and when the lid is opened wide, the air is somewhat obstructed by the bottom of it.

The other night, my MacBook Pro's fans started running at high speed when the computer was asleep. Loud enough to wake me up. And this just kept on going until I finally decided to turn the computer off. Is this normal? Is this anything to worry about?

Recently, an unknown number of first-revision Santa Rosa MacBook Pros began exhibiting issues with their onboard video cards. After a reboot, or on wake from sleep, the machine refuses to acknowledge the presence of a display, either internal or external. From that point on, the computer never regains its displays - not after a reboot, etc. Subsequent debugging indicates that the machine is misidentifying its NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT card as the MacBooks Intel X3100 card. This issue is known to affect at least 50 people - a group of affected users has formed a Google Spreadsheet in order to document and organize cases.

My iMac (intel core duo) after a hard drive replacement seems to be running the fans at a high rate of speed. Usually just a few minuets after startup. Before the upgrade they were almost silent and now they are very noticeable. I need to get taken care of or just a result of installing a larget hard drive?Â

I bought one of the new-gen iMacs last month--my first Mac! My computer will often start making a low-droning noise, and it sounds like a fan. I have iStat, and usually during this time it will say that my Optical Drive and CPU Fan are both running at around 4000rpm. This happens when there is very little CPU usage too. It's happening right now, and I only have firefox running.

I downloaded a program to monitor my late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro's temperatures. Just a few minutes ago while playing music/playing an ONLINE game real briefly it warned me that my CPU temperature was too high. (167Ëš F) Is that too high of a temperature? What should the "range" be?

I've been debating whether or not to upgrade my 3 year old 15" Macbook Pro that has a 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa) to the new 13" 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro. FYI... My current system also has 4GB of RAM. Since both systems are Core 2 Duo, what kind of speed bump am I going to see? Would this be a substantial upgrade?

My new MBP is constantly either reading or writing to the disk. I had the problem before, reinstalled OS X, everything seemed better until it started again. Disk seems good, smart checked, tried to run diskwarrior but unfortunately not supported by this Mac.
It seems to heat up quite a bit too.
Activity monitor shows no cpu hogger and doesnt give info on the software writing / reading to disk

using Ichat the other day running a full screen chat, and I saw the temp of the CPU rise to about 65C and the fans started spinning up 6200.... That was understandable as the CPU was under load... but after I closed the ichat down, the CPU temp dropped down to about 50C but the fans stayed at 6200 for a long period of time. probably about 10 minutes or so... then they slowly crepted down to 2500.

I have a fan utility that lists 2 fans. The "Left" fan is at 6204 rpm's, temp 81.4C The "Right" fan shows 0rpm's, temp -1C. Is this merely because the sensor is capable of recording two fan speeds or do I really have one malfunctioning fan? (which would explain the high cpu temp, if it applies).
A third sensor, a widget, records the same temp, with Heatsink A 70C and Heatsink B 64C. I realize all three sensors are getting their readings from the same spot; which one do I rely on?

Have an Extreme base stations and express repeater connected to my DSL services. On my primary iMac connected via ethernet I get 5.25MBps speed. The speed on this computer is always constant. On the remote MacPro I get anywhere from 1.5MBps to 5MPps speed within a half hour of testing.
