Mac Pro :: How To Use Floor
Feb 20, 2008My setup is: Early 08 Mac Pro with 2x23" ACDs, on an ATI card (for the time being)
I've got the tower on the floor, on carpet. Is this really bad news? The HDs etc look to be sealed.
MacBook Air :: Stick With Plans To Purchase MBA Rev C
Jun 8, 2009I knew I should wait to see what Rev C looked like before buying an MBA, but I am disappointed that we didn't get 4GB RAM or a larger SSD. So now I'm strongly considering a new 13" MBP with 256GB SSD (or maybe 500GB SATA if it isn't too sluggish) with 4GB RAM. I know it's a steal, but on the other hand the MBA price cut is pretty tempting. Is anyone else on the fence about which to get? The 13" MBP or MBA? I'm going to college in the fall so portability is a consideration, though either option would be an improvement over my 12" iBook in terms of weight and even thinness.
I have two major concerns with the MBA rev C.:
1) The battery. 3 hours (with the MBA) is probably good enough in most cases, as this is roughly what I get currently with my iBook. However, the MBP has a major advantage with its new battery tech.
2) Hard drive. I know I would not buy a MBA unless it had a SSD in it, but I really don't know if 128GB will be enough for me down the road. It is right now (my HDD space is mostly music and iPhoto libraries...no video editing for me) but I am thinking that videos from iTunes which I may or may not begin purchasing at some point will eat up space. I would be more comfortable purchasing 250+GB of HDD space in my next computer. I remember in 2004 buying my iBook thinking that 30GB would be plenty. Boy, was I wrong!...................
Mac Pro :: Keep On Floor / Top Of Desk?
Apr 3, 2008be more heathier for the mac pro to have longevity if it were on top. I guess if it were on top of a desk, the mac pro would collect less dust + able to breathe alot better for less stress on the logicboard/fan? I'm seriously thinking about putting the mac pro on top of my desk.

Oct 15, 2009Apple plans to counter the upcoming release of Windows 7 with advertisements that will lambaste the upgrade process from Windows XP, and portray Macs as more secure.
According to BusinessWeek, Apple will launch ads in response to the debut of Microsoft's latest operating system, due on Oct 22. The spots are expected to criticize Windows and portray the Mac as a superior platform. Apple views the launch as an opportunity to lure Windows users to the Mac.
"It will likely make the case that Macs are less susceptible to viruses and are best suited to its popular iPods and and iPhones," the report said. "And look for it to poke fun at Microsoft for making XP owners go through an arduous process to upgrade to Windows 7 -- one that includes backing up all their files to an external drive, reformatting their PC, and then reinstalling all of their old programs, assuming they still have the CDs."
Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president for Worldwide Product Marketing, said the impending launch of Windows 7 presents a "good opportunity" for the Mac maker to make market share gains. He said the upgrade process from Windows XP to Windows 7 in particular is one that consumers will likely find unpleasant.
"Any user that reads all those steps is probably going to freak out," Schiller said. "If you have to go through all that, why not just buy a Mac?"
Analysts have predicted that the launch of Windows 7 will not have a major impact on Mac sales. In fact, history would suggest that the debut of a new Microsoft operating system has a positive effect on Apple's computer sales. Over the last 10 years, Mac sales have spiked following the debut of Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Windows 7 has earned rave reviews from some, including known Apple advocate Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal. The technology columnist said that the latest operating system from Apple's rival to the north has narrowed the gap between Windows and Mac OS X.
But Apple also recently launched its own operating system upgrade in the form of Mac OS X 10.6. The $29 Snow Leopard debuted on Aug. 28 and got off to a swift sales start doubling that of its predecessor, Leopard, and performing four times better than Tiger. Apple's new operating system was also met positively by reviewers.
Schiller said the adoption of new versions of Mac OS X shows Apple's momentum in the PC market. Both Windows Vista and Leopard were released at the same time, and more than 70 percent of Mac users made the upgrade, while less than 20 percent of those on Windows made the jump to Vista.
Mac Pro :: Finding On Desk Or Floor?
Jun 10, 2008I have been noticing more MacPros kept on top of desk rather than on the floor. Why is this. I think it's too big to go on a desk, even a big one. Is there something I don't know about. I guess the 'dust bunnies' may be a bit larger on the floor but it's also cooler. Getting to the back is just as much as a pain in both places.

However, the WiFi just won't reach up to the third floor where his patio and game room is. Too much concrete I would guess.

Feb 2, 2010I've been placing it on top of my desk, which is pretty huge BUT I noticed that including my 17" mbp on the desk and the additional of a second monitor, I need more space! I've been thinking about placing the mac pro underneath my desk, pushed to the far back. I do own a shihtzu that does have the occasional hairball popping out somewhere random and I try to vacuum twice a week. With that information, do you guys think that moving the Mac Pro on the floor on a carpet would attract that much more dust as to the Mac Pro being on top of the desk?

For example I downloaded wondershare dvd ripper and everytime I open it the disc image shows up on my desktop and I cant eject it without quitting the application. Aug 17, 2010My dad was saving a bunch of Word docs on his Mac - he had one large file that he split up into twenty-some smaller files, which he then saved onto both his desktop and on a flash drive. Somehow along the way (neither he nor I had any clue how) but 4 of those files saved as an alias that point to nowhere. In other words, I can't find the originals anywhere on his computer or flash drives.
Even stranger is that one of those files aliased to the Applications folder. Keep in mind these are all supposed to be word documents. They all still end with .doc, but their type is an alias. I have no clue how they were created as an alias, but they were. It's probably a longshot without knowing where the original is located, but do any of you guys know how to possibly retrieve this?
MacBook :: Applications Installed Correctly But Not Showing In Applications Folder?
Mar 12, 2012I have a friends MacBook running 10.6.8 2.26Ghz Intel Core Duo 8 gig ram. I have installed UnrarX a couple of times with no errors in the installation process, however the application does not appear in the applications folder or any where else and cannot find it to open .rar files.
I fixed the issue by simply copying the UnrarX app from my MacBookPro but would like to find out what is going on. I have been told by my friend that she has had this issue before.

Oct 23, 2009I recently reinstalled OSX 10.5.8 on my penryn MBP so I could make a larger XP bootcamp partition. After reinstalling leopard and restoring my whole system through time machine my computer is acting weird. First, "the file "itunes library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes". It didn't upgrade itunes to 9 till after I had done all the TM restoring. should be older, no? Second, adobe applications crashed. I was in AI working on a 500 mb file and BOOM, beach ball>crash. All other CS3 unable to open. I have 4 gigs of ram and some of the applications that would not open were not even in use at the time of the AI crash, could this be something with the TM backup? CS3 was all installed together.
Third. While this epic crash is happening on my desktop disappears. Just a blank desktop image. but wait, If I click were things used to be, Bam they appear out of no where, but only if I click where it is supposed to be. It's there in the desktop folder but not showing up as icons on my desktop. I think this has happened to me before the reinstall too, though never all at once, usually when I use the "pinchy" to resize icons one or two will disappear. Fourth. Cisco clean access agent beach balls and requires hard reset. the login window was floating on screen all the way till the screen turned off. These all happened in the same day, now It is working some what like normal, though my itunes is broke. Any ideas on how to fix this itunes? If I only need one application and it's plug-ins (SU and Podium beta) restored through TM ( i have a disk for all the others) is there a way to just restore the one. Would this give me a more stable system over all? should I go ahead and reinstall and restore the one app and do the rest manually?

However, I preferred the US version of iTunes with Movies/TV Shows instead of Films/TV Programmes and Seasons instead of Series.

I know I can use the consolidate library command, which will move the apps to the external. But as soon as I d/l another app iTunes begins saving them to the default folder again.
