MacBook Air :: Stick With Plans To Purchase MBA Rev C
Jun 8, 2009
I knew I should wait to see what Rev C looked like before buying an MBA, but I am disappointed that we didn't get 4GB RAM or a larger SSD. So now I'm strongly considering a new 13" MBP with 256GB SSD (or maybe 500GB SATA if it isn't too sluggish) with 4GB RAM. I know it's a steal, but on the other hand the MBA price cut is pretty tempting. Is anyone else on the fence about which to get? The 13" MBP or MBA? I'm going to college in the fall so portability is a consideration, though either option would be an improvement over my 12" iBook in terms of weight and even thinness.
I have two major concerns with the MBA rev C.:
1) The battery. 3 hours (with the MBA) is probably good enough in most cases, as this is roughly what I get currently with my iBook. However, the MBP has a major advantage with its new battery tech.
2) Hard drive. I know I would not buy a MBA unless it had a SSD in it, but I really don't know if 128GB will be enough for me down the road. It is right now (my HDD space is mostly music and iPhoto libraries...no video editing for me) but I am thinking that videos from iTunes which I may or may not begin purchasing at some point will eat up space. I would be more comfortable purchasing 250+GB of HDD space in my next computer. I remember in 2004 buying my iBook thinking that 30GB would be plenty. Boy, was I wrong!...................

Apple plans to counter the upcoming release of Windows 7 with advertisements that will lambaste the upgrade process from Windows XP, and portray Macs as more secure.
According to BusinessWeek, Apple will launch ads in response to the debut of Microsoft's latest operating system, due on Oct 22. The spots are expected to criticize Windows and portray the Mac as a superior platform. Apple views the launch as an opportunity to lure Windows users to the Mac.
"It will likely make the case that Macs are less susceptible to viruses and are best suited to its popular iPods and and iPhones," the report said. "And look for it to poke fun at Microsoft for making XP owners go through an arduous process to upgrade to Windows 7 -- one that includes backing up all their files to an external drive, reformatting their PC, and then reinstalling all of their old programs, assuming they still have the CDs."
Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president for Worldwide Product Marketing, said the impending launch of Windows 7 presents a "good opportunity" for the Mac maker to make market share gains. He said the upgrade process from Windows XP to Windows 7 in particular is one that consumers will likely find unpleasant.
"Any user that reads all those steps is probably going to freak out," Schiller said. "If you have to go through all that, why not just buy a Mac?"
Analysts have predicted that the launch of Windows 7 will not have a major impact on Mac sales. In fact, history would suggest that the debut of a new Microsoft operating system has a positive effect on Apple's computer sales. Over the last 10 years, Mac sales have spiked following the debut of Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Windows 7 has earned rave reviews from some, including known Apple advocate Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal. The technology columnist said that the latest operating system from Apple's rival to the north has narrowed the gap between Windows and Mac OS X.
But Apple also recently launched its own operating system upgrade in the form of Mac OS X 10.6. The $29 Snow Leopard debuted on Aug. 28 and got off to a swift sales start doubling that of its predecessor, Leopard, and performing four times better than Tiger. Apple's new operating system was also met positively by reviewers.
Schiller said the adoption of new versions of Mac OS X shows Apple's momentum in the PC market. Both Windows Vista and Leopard were released at the same time, and more than 70 percent of Mac users made the upgrade, while less than 20 percent of those on Windows made the jump to Vista.

Video streaming service Hulu posted and quickly retracted an item on its official blog Thursday, in which the company stated that it doesn't see HTML5 in its immediate future.Eugene Wei, vice president of product with Hulu, said that his company's contractual requirements make the transition to HTML5 too difficult. The current player on the website, built with Adobe Flash, does a great deal more than stream video."We continue to monitor developments on HTML5, but as of now it doesn?t yet meet all of our customers' needs," Wei wrote. "Our player doesn?t just simply stream video, it must also secure the content, handle reporting for our advertisers, render the video using a high performance codec to ensure premium visual quality, communicate back with the server to determine how long to buffer and what bitrate to stream, and dozens of other things that aren't necessarily visible to the end user."

So my question is simple. I have the base 13" mbp. So I have 2 x 1GB sticks. Can I get 1 x 4GB stick and make that total 5GB? Or do I have to purchase in pairs (2 x 4GB)?

I have been doing some research on the MacBook Air's Flash Storage and according to the repair and servicing manual for the MacBook Air (see attached files) there is an actual Memory Sick that is in the MacBook Air and is not soldered to the Main Logic Board. This part of the service manual tells you how to remove the memory stick and replace it. Everyone clams it is "non-user replaceable" but this guide suggests that is it possible, if one was able to purchase one of the Memory Sicks.

I am looking for a USB TV-stick for my MacBook. I will be using it to watch Freeview (Digital TV in the UK).
The things I'm looking for is that the stick works well with Macs, the software is easy to use, and some recording/scheduling function.
The choices I found so far are:
Elgato EyeTV for DTT
Equinux TubeStick
Miglia TVMini2
The current champ seems to be the Elgato, but pricey at nearly 50. Any ideas about the other two?
I am also open to suggestions to other USB TV-sticks that work well with Macs.

Always buy them from macsales and never been disappointed. Apples memory in the past (the stock chips), have been from Samsung or hynnx(sp?)
My question is - which brand memory does macsales.com sell for the 4gb sticks of pc3-8500 sodimm?
There's a good deal on micron 4gb sticks on eBay right now and I'm deciding if I should go with it

I have been given a 256GB USB stick by a friend. It is labelled (falsely) as Sony.
I posted in the Macbook section since my Macbook reads it as actually holding 256GB. Suspecting this is not true (it was purchased for about $50 in China) I would like to know how I can find out it's true capacity.
It is currently holding 47GB and rising...

The keyboard sticks while using Excel in MS office 2004. This is a very odd situation. I have a user that when she is working on her computer, the keyboard will stick when she is working in Excel. The keyboard is working as usual when she is in any other apps on the MacBook. The MacBook is running Leopard 10.5.6(?).
I have not come across any other desktops, laptops running Excel or any other OS that have encountered this.

I've just come across this product at belkin. A 16 GB solid state drive, that flush fits in the express-port of the MBP.
Does this mean, that you can use this as a typical SSD if it is left in the port at all does? Running apps and stuff directly from this? Or is it just a fast type of memory-stick?

I just bought my first macbook pro (15-inch) and want to keep it in good shape. Any suggestions on shells, cases, or stick on protectors that are good for use on this computer? I have seen the ones that apple sells such as the speck products, and there are also ones like invisiShield from Zagg.

I'll be traveling to remote tribal Ethiopia and would like to use the Cloud for frequent uploading of photos and journal, so that if my laptop or iPad gets stolen, most of my stuff will be safe on my desktop at home. I'm looking for any suggestions that might broadly relate to this. I was planning to get an iPad, but I'd have to lug around a keyboard to use with it (I'm a fast typist on a real keyboard); worst of all, I wouldn't be able to download photos from my (regular style) camera onto the iPad to get them to the Cloud. Apple's "Camera Connection Kit" doesn't seem to be the answer, by the looks of the many bad reviews. Â
So then I started leaning toward the small MacBookAir, which would be only slightly large than the iPad, but have it's own real keyboard AND have all the familiar versions of mail and other apps on it. Plus I could download my camera pics and get them to the Cloud via the laptop. BUT the problem with that is that the laptop won't connect cellularly for uploading to the Cloud—and WiFi won't be nearly as accessible as cellular in these remote areas. my wife was backing up her photos to our USB stick when suddenly she gets this warning...Just before she had been trying to copy some photos, but the computer didn't allow that, probably some photos were corrupted. I however found those photos on the USB stick, but they are grayed out.I can still open everything else on the stick, and copy from the stick to the desktop, but I can't delete those photos from the stick, trash simply says they can't be deleted. So I decided to simply reformat the stick. However, when I try and erase it, I get this warning
I cannot verify the permissions nor the disk, and I can't repair either, the tabs are simply grayed out. So I decided to check on the permissions on the stick, and suddenly it is in read-only mode, and I can't change it. The lock on the bottom and the droptab won't appear..I tried using google to find a solution and someone pointed out a terminal command, but everything there seemed in order.. I suddenly can only read the Volume, and nothing else, and I can't format nor repair it! I bought this stick very recently, and I want to try everything before I pick up my wallet for a new one! The problem started on my wifes 2012 MacBook Air, and still persists on my late 2011 MacBook Pro. We both have Mavericks.

I just jumped on the Mac train and bought a Macbook Pro 13". There's a dead pixel on the screen. I'm taking it back to the retailer tomorrow. The retailer has a zero dead pixel guarantee on monitors so I'm going to hope that covers laptops too. I just wanted to know how many others have experienced dead pixels on purchasing a new Macbook Pro - i.e. what's the likelihood that the next one I get will have a dead pixel?
