IMac :: Not Sleeping And Screensavers Not Activating?
May 1, 2009
All of a sudden my iMac has just started not sleeping after the time its supposed to and the screensaver wont turn on when its supposed to. I havent installed any new software, its just happened out of the blue, I can still use hot corners to activate sleep and the screensaver but id rather have them activate by themselves. But they're not, and all of my System Preference's sleep and screensaver options are fine. Why wont my Mac sleep and/or turn on the screensaver after set times?

Im looking for two screensavers, one being a fireplace and one an aquarium. They gotta be 3D and look rather realistic. I can only find crap or expensive stuff on google. I think I had the trial of the one on apple.com but the text running across kinda kills it.

I purchased a lovely 27" iMac yesterday. I have installed Windows 7 64bit on it and apart from a few quirks everything is running very well.
One thing that is bothering me is the Windows7 screensavers and power-management... they never activate. The power-saving features of Windows 7 don't seem to work at all. I did an install using the new "late 2009" drivers on a USB thumb drive during installation of Windows 7 so I think I've done everything properly. Is there something else I need to do in order to access Win7's power management features ?
Also, I've noticed that the Mac drivers for the ATI 4850 onboard graphics do not offer me the full range of resolutions (there are only a few options at the moment, the full native res, 1280x720, 1920x1080 and 800x600). How do I get access to the full range of resolutions ? Can I install ATI Radeon drivers and use those instead of the Apple supplied drivers ?

I need a cheap way to video/audio/ record on my iMac somehow...
I have sleep apnea-- and have spent thousands of dollars and years to determine the effectiveness of one sleep apnea apparatus after another to lessen my throat collapsing and me choking at night.
I can't afford a 375.00 home test -- or even an 85.00 oximeter report all the time.
I heard of someone using a video camera to photograph themselves at night to show their MD what was going on.
Is there a way I can plug in my iMac 17" screen with the Intel Core Processor (1.83 GHz) pointed at me while I sleep so I can get me on a video conference-- or imovie-- or just record the sound somehow... Ideally--- if something can just record me for 7 hours in semi darkness-- and then I can run it on fast forward to see when I have the cessation of breath-- that I can email to my MD.

Whenever my Mac (it happens on two different ones) is awaken from sleep, it seems the machine was attempting to log out. If there was an unsaved file and I wake the machine it says it timed out to log out waiting for me to have saved it. At that point I just cancel the logout.Â
This happens on an iMac 2013 and a new Mac Pro as well. Is there a setting I am missing?Â

I have a second monitor (Dell 20 inch widescreen) hooked up to my 24 inch iMac, and while I'm running windows, when the iMac monitor sleeps, it sleeps. But, in Leopard (v10.5.7) whenever the iMac monitor sleeps, the secondary monitor does what a monitor usually does when the video cable is unplugged (does the whole factory test thing with the box of red/green/blue randomly moving around.) Is there any way to make it sleep?

I've just recently noticed that my iMac display won't go to sleep, despite my energy settings should turn it off after 5 minutes of inactivity. The only difference I can think of is that instead of my Mighty Mouse, I now use a Microsoft standard USB mouse. Is the Microsoft mouse somehow keeping the iMac "active"? What else could just suddenly stop my iMac display from turning off automatically?

I am running OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks on a 27-inch Mid 2011 iMac. Prior to upgrading to Mavericks, I would go to System Preferences_Energy Saver and set Display Sleep to 1 minute. This would keep the computer screen turned off at night, but would allow for backups with Carbon Copy Cloner to function. (My Computer Sleep setting is set to Never, Put Hard Disks to Sleep when Possible is checked, and the remaining two items Wake For Network Access and Start Up Automatically after a Power Failure are not checked.Â
However, after the Mavericks upgrade, my iMac wakes itself up without any prompting. This occurs when there are no other programs running. Even after putting the machine to Sleep from the Apple Tab, it still wakes itself up with no programs running, etc.Â
I also checked the settings in System Preferences_Accessibility and the Voice Over, Captions, and Speakable Items settings are off.Â
After running the Terminal Application with the command line syslog |grep -i "Wake reason" I get the following results:Â Â syslog |grep -i "Wake reason"Aug 28 00:34:54 kernel[0] <Debug>: Wake reason: EHC2Â My understanding is that this means that a USB connected device may be waking the system. Accordingly, I disconnected all USB devices (forgot the devices in USB Preferences), except for my Wireless Apple Trackpad. However, the same problem occurs.Â

I have a 27" iMac with four USB external hard drives attached. The drives are working fine, but one of the drives takes a long time to wake up after it hasn't been used for a while. The other drives are accessible from the Finder almost instantly, but this one drive causes the spinning ball for about 10 seconds before it is accessible. Not a BIG deal, but it happens all the time even after relatively short periods of inactivity.
I thought maybe I could uncheck the "put the hard disks to sleep when possible" option in the Energy Saver preferences. But this would presumably affect all of my drives (including the internal) and that might lessen the longevity of the drives, right? Are there any options for just turning off the sleep for this one drive, or perhaps a way to shorten the wake time?

I've been using the [URL] Screensavers since my very first RevA MBA and I really like them. They protect the screen from keyboard scratches and indents and they're a cloth to wipe off any smudges. Sadly, the Radtech store doesn't yet have one for the 11.6 MBA and customer support didn't know when they would.
So I did a little measuring and ordered a custom sized one.
11"x7" (I picked the "grape" color)
And it fits perfectly. Exactly covers the keyboard and the trackpad, yet still lets the lid close just right.
So if anybody else can't wait, just order an 11"x7" custom.
(I'm not in any way affiliated with Radtech, I just love their products.)

It seems that all of the older screensavers I've tried in SL no longer work. The one I love, BlankScreen, which dims the monitor to a transparency that allows you to still see the desktop (and toggle the transparency amount) is one of them. My question is, will this be a matter of the app-maker updating the screensaver, or Apple updating SL to support these older screensavers? I ask because this one hasn't been updated for a few years now. Alternatively, does anyone know of another screensaver that does the same thing, that does work in SL? Is anyone here knowledgeable enough to be able to make a new screensaver that has the same functionality?

Recently I noticed that my screensaver changed by itself. So I went to go change it and realized that the only screensavers I had were "Computer Name" and "Flurry". I know this is kind of a stupid question to ask but its bugging me.

Just bought a new Macbook and everything's great except the screensaver facility. I'm primarily using the one that previews album covers from itunes, but it doesn't really matter which one I use. They all cancel themselves after a few seconds as though the trackpad's been activated, even though I'm nowhere near it.
I've obviously tried restarting to see if it makes a difference and it usually does for about an hour. The screensaver comes on and stays on. But I'll do some work and check it again later by activating a hot corner and it quits again after a few seconds like before.
This is hardly the end of the world, but it is pretty annoying. Anybody else had this happen on Snow Leopard and is there a way to fix it?

After updating to 10.7.4 & Safari 5.1.7 all my screensavers have disappered from System Prefrences. The Screensavers are still in their appropriate folders in "Finder" I have tried a few suggestion from other blogs but still no luck, hoping someone here can help.Â
Other but less important changes also occurred after the updates. 1) changed my (custom) log-in screen back to default. 2) removed "Library" from Finder ( I had Library in Finder via terminal command. 3) replaced my custom dock back to default dock.

I did some looking for it, but couldn't find a thing.
I'm wondering if there is any way that two screensavers can run independently on two monitors. So, if there is, drop me a line.

This is really annoying me. What could cause my screen saver to not activate?I've got it set to activate after 3 minutes. I just can't think of a reason why it's not working. I've just reinstalled Leopard (not because of this) and I had the same problem before.I did wonder if the iStat menu's were keeping the screen saver from kicking in (it monitors my CPU and memory uses so is changing constantly) but I tried uninstalling it and it continues to 'diss me'!

So when I had Leopard 10.5, I used to use Save Hollywood as my screensaver application. What that does is transform any video file that you have in a screensaver. After Snow Leopard came out, Save Hollywood no longer works... I don't know what else to do, that was a must have for me and it is starting to frustrate me. Is there any other software that would allow me to use a video file as a screensaver that would work on Snow Leopard. Has Apple fixed this issue on 10.6.3?

I am updated currently to 10.7.4. Basically the computer freezes up and becomes unresponsive. The last two times it has happened, I noticed (Possibly a time or two before) it was right as I was activating Mission Control. I use Mission Control as a hot corner and right as the mouse hits the corner to activate it, the computer screen shuts off and I have to do a hard reset holding the power button down to get it back. If the keyboard was lit up at the time the computer goes down it stays lit up, and the fans continue to run, but I cannot get it to do anything. I thought maybe the screen was the only thing off, but the volume buttons do no make the sound associated with raising and lowering the volume.
I shut the lid and open it, but the keyboard stays lit up even when it is down. I should also add that I upgraded the RAM to 8g in April and I had absolutely no problems before. The RAM tested out fine according to Apple even after a deep lengthy scan. I bought the RAM from Crucial and I am sure it is the correct RAM for my computer. One would think even Apple should have told me if it was not the correct RAM, or the computer just plain would not work. So I am at a loss as to what the problem is. As a last thing, both of most recent times this happened, the computer had not just been woke up, but maybe 5-10 minutes after being brought out of a lengthy sleep maybe 3-4 hours or so. Or it seemed like this was the case.

Just wondering if anyone could help me figure this out.
I have my 40" flat screen plugged into my imac via VGA cable to mirror the image.
I'm just trying to have the imac display sleep while I play a movie full screen through the external TV.
I've tried two different ways but both have failed.
1-I set up a hot corner in the imac to sleep display but this results in both the display and the TV sleeping.
2-I just set the power settings to sleep after 1 minute. This works but then If a movie is playing the computer won't go to sleep.

Just updated to 10.6 from 10.4, and one of the first things I notice is that it keeps spinning up my three external harddrives at actions that should not set them in use, like starting an application or opening the trash. It seems pretty random, though I'm suspecting it has something to do with mdworker, quicklookd or both. If anyone knows of a solution that doesn't involve unmounting the harddrives, do tell.
