IMac :: IMac 27" - Windows 7 64bit - Screensaver Not Activating

Mar 20, 2010

I purchased a lovely 27" iMac yesterday. I have installed Windows 7 64bit on it and apart from a few quirks everything is running very well.

One thing that is bothering me is the Windows7 screensavers and power-management... they never activate. The power-saving features of Windows 7 don't seem to work at all. I did an install using the new "late 2009" drivers on a USB thumb drive during installation of Windows 7 so I think I've done everything properly. Is there something else I need to do in order to access Win7's power management features ?

Also, I've noticed that the Mac drivers for the ATI 4850 onboard graphics do not offer me the full range of resolutions (there are only a few options at the moment, the full native res, 1280x720, 1920x1080 and 800x600). How do I get access to the full range of resolutions ? Can I install ATI Radeon drivers and use those instead of the Apple supplied drivers ?

IMac :: Wants To Install Windows 7 64bit

Nov 11, 2009

Has anyone had success installing Win7 x64 on a new iMac?

I know the previous gen didn't support it. I am wondering if the new ones do.

Because of some of the gaming I do, I would really like support for more than 4GB of RAM in Windows.

I searched around and found some limited references to people attempting it.

Windows On Mac :: 27" IMac, Bootcamp, No Screensaver

Jan 14, 2010

Last night I installed Bootcamp on my i5 17" IMac and everything works except the screensaver and power management stuff won't kick on. For reference, here is what I did so far...

Setup Bootcamp Partition

installed windows 7 64 to that partition

used external display because of the video issues to finish the install

let windows update download/install all drivers/patches (which fixed the display issue)

installed bootcamp drivers from osx dvd

uninstalled bluetooth drivers so my apple wireless keyboard would work again.

I know that Bootcamp isn't supported for Windows 7 yet but does anyone know what is causing this or perhaps a workaround until official windows 7 drivers are available?

IMac :: Not Sleeping And Screensavers Not Activating?

May 1, 2009

All of a sudden my iMac has just started not sleeping after the time its supposed to and the screensaver wont turn on when its supposed to. I havent installed any new software, its just happened out of the blue, I can still use hot corners to activate sleep and the screensaver but id rather have them activate by themselves. But they're not, and all of my System Preference's sleep and screensaver options are fine. Why wont my Mac sleep and/or turn on the screensaver after set times?

So I've had my 24" Al iMac ever since November 2007, good and everything until the past couple days, after extended use of the imac, everything is fine, screen is great, but when entering screensaver, its still great, its like a couple minutes or so into the screen saver when the top of my iMac's screen starts to flicker! When I move the mouse to get out of the screen saver, every thing is back to normal. It happens with all screen savers.

IMac :: System Slow After Screensaver Or Sleep

Dec 19, 2009

My new i5 iMac has been really slow after I get out of its screensaver or take it out of sleep. Even if its on the screensaver for a minute, moving the mouse causes it to freeze and try to load the desktop. This takes about a minute before my computer is fully functional again. Also, I don't know if this is just me thinking this or if its actually a problem, but the computer seems a lot slower than my previous, a 24" 3.06Ghz iMac.

Another thing, the fans seem to spin a lot more with this computer. Watching a YouTube or Hulu video makes the fans spin a ton. I've never had that happen with a Mac before. The computer also gets literally too hot to touch. Anybody else have this?

Also, on a (kind of) unrelated note, Windows performance with this is horrible. I've tried Windows 7 and Vista, and both run... adequately. The fans also spin a ton in Vista (what I currently have installed due to there being no 27" drivers for 7 yet).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Screensaver Frozen On IMac After Going To Sleep?

Feb 18, 2012

When my IMac goes to sleep, the screen saver is "frozen". The only way to get to my login accounts is by "cleaning" the screen with my mouse. It's as though the screen is not refreshing itself after going to sleep and whatever the last image was, it stays. However, it's not locked up or anything. I just need to move my mouse around over the login accounts and it slowly clears away the screen saver so I can see where to click to log in. I've tried disabling the screen saver, but have the same results. Something is causing the last image to freeze on the screen when the monitor sleeps.

Windows On Mac :: Vista 64bit For Games But What If The Games Are Not 64bit?

Mar 7, 2009

I was told to run Vista 64bit for games, but I was wondering about this Since many applications dont even have a 64bit version out and I dont think games are 64bit, will they all run under vista 64bit? I have a feeling this might be a dumb question, but I just wanted to make sure before I go out and buy Vista 64.

Also do you think windows 7 is better for games? Will it even run games that have not been written for it? Or would I just be better sticking with vista 64 until everyone has caught up and made their apps compatible with the new windows 7? I mean will antivirus programs, ripping apps, etc work under windows 7 without a hitch, or should I wait and just use vista64 for now?

Windows On Mac :: Windows 7 64bit - Unibody MPB 15" - Media Key Invisible

I reinstalled the keyboard driver and there has been no change. It's like those keys are disabled. Pressing fn will let them use their typical F function, so they work, it's just being blocked by the BootCamp manager or something.

Something else - they keys are invisible to the OS. I can't use a 3rd party hotkey manager to just reassign them.

Windows On Mac :: Sound In Windows Vista (64bit) Not Working Right Under BootCamp 3.0?

Sep 24, 2009

Last night I installed Windows Vista to run a game on here, but I got several issues. I already installed the drivers from the Snow Leopard DVD, but the problems still persist.

The issues are:

1. Sound is very very low and uneven. I have the volume all the way maxed, but the loudest it can go is less than half than the potential volume in Snow Leopard.

2. Headphones don't work. I've tried like 3 pairs of headphones and none of them work. When I plug them in, the sound still comes from the left speaker (I can barely hear the right speaker) on the laptop and not on the headphones. Also, the headphone jack is emitting a red light out of it.

3. The lights on the keyboard won't shut off. I used the F5 key to turn off the keyboard backlighting, and while it goes very dim they won't shut off.

I already tried the suggestions on this thread but none of those fixes work. I need help! Especially with the sound! Anything at all would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running a MacBook Pro 13" from June 2009, 2.26GHz Intel, 4GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce 9400M. I instlled a 64bit version of Windows Vista (OEM).

Windows On Mac :: Does Windows 7 Require Snow Leopard To Be Booted 64bit?

Nov 20, 2009

I'm new to using Windows on a Mac but need to do it now for some video rendering applications that have transcoding, filtering, effects (like VirtualDub) that are only available on a PC.

I have a 17"MBP (3 months old), 2.8Ghz Duo, 4Gb RAM. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, was excited about 64-bit though I'm not an expert, I just heard it would be faster.

I didn't realize SL doesn't boot 64-bit anyhow, that you need to hold "6" & "4" at startup to get it to boot in 64bit mode. This surprised me because I figure many people assumed SL was 64bit! Just getting it to boot properly was a hassle. The 6 & 4 trick didn't work for me.

I had to edit the preference file which wouldn't save at first either because of permissions (I had to drag it to my desktop, edit it, save it, then drag it back to the folder and enter in my administrator password).

Only then did I realize my brand new eSATA Express Card didn't work in 64-bit mode. Upsetting because I just bought the hot new Sonnet Tempo card for $200 that claims to work with Snow Leopard. So until it works I'll be running 32bit mode on my Mac.

But if I want to run Windows 7, does this mean I can only run the 32bit version?

IMac :: Windows 7 Won't Complete Install On 27" IMac?

Oct 24, 2009

I just spent the past 5 hours trying to install Windows 7 via BootCamp on my new 27" iMac.

It would get past the initial installation and then after the final reboot just before it runs off the hard drive and asks you for a serial number, the screen would go black and I couldn't do anything.

So I found this solution here:

[URL]

Except the instructions on that site are for an iMac with an NVIDIA Graphics Card. The 27" iMac has an ATI card. So at step 6 I deleted the file named: ATIKMDAG.SYS from the same directory.

Then clicked restart and was able to finish through the install process.

Summary: (from a response below)

The way the iMac 27" DisplayPort works in the system, when installing windows it will output to BOTH the iMac screen and DisplayPort.

When Windows 7 install is reaching a certain point it is making a choice as to which display it believes it the primary display. ]

If you have a display plugged into your iMac's display port or have that ability you will see your install is working just fine, the problem is just that windows believes the active displayport on the back of the iMac is the primary display and moves all video to the port..

that is why you see a black screen. Rebooting and doing the driver deletion steps does work as it will allow windows to run on a generic driver unable to make that choice.

Note: you will need an additional monitor and a Mini-Display Port adapter to plug the monitor into the iMac to use the above method.

The BootCamp driver that loads only give a max resolution of 1980 X 1440 so everything looks stretched. Installing the ATI drivers from ATI did no good. (See the update below to fix this)

Also be aware that only the keyboard will be active during the install so you will need a usb mouse unless your really good at navigating Windows with only a keyboard.

UPDATE:

After installing Windows 7 if you run windows update there is an update available for the ATI card. Once installed and restarted the resolution is now fixed.

When you go into the resolution settings in Windows 7 the display now shows up as a color LCD and the max available resolution is 2560 x 1440.

Now I am trying to conserve hard drive space but should i get the 16GB 32bit or the 20GB 64bit version of windows 7 and how much space should i allocate for the partition?

2.
Games i will be playing:
Counter Strike: Source
Call of Duty: WaW
Maybe Battlefield 2

3.
I plan on getting some newer games since I don't have my crappy computer anymore.

Windows On Mac :: Windows 32bit Or 64bit For Gaming On A Mac Pro?

Oct 5, 2009

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

I have an 8-core 3.2GHz 2008 Mac Pro with 16GB RAM. I've just ordered the EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 graphics card and am hoping to turn my beloved mac into a bit of a sexy PC gaming beast for some evening fun. Already purchased Batman Arkham Asylum, Gears of War and an Xbox 360 controller to get me started

I'll cut to the chase. Microsoft are offering a free upgrade to Windows 7 if you buy Vista at the moment so that's not the issue. The issue is 32bit or 64bit for a gaming box - which is the best version to get for performance and compatibility with gaming on windows?

I'm looking to purchase either the 32bit or 64bit version of Vista (with the free upgrade to the corresponding Windows 7 version).

Which is the best to get? 32bit or 64bit? I've been reading that some games don't work well with 64bit Windows. Lots of conflicting articles and comments.

32bit or 64bit Windows... what's the best for a bootcamp gaming rig?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Screensaver Stuck On IMac Lion

Sometimes when my screensaver kicks in the display never goes to sleep. Instead, the dancing screensaver, which is clearly running, is sucking up CPU and running hot for days. When I finally sit down and move the mouse, the pointer moves but the screen refuses to wake. This is a fairly new iMac, no mods, no programs installed of questionable nature, virtual new sock OEM iMac. Thinking about downgrading to SL as this is one of many problems that I have with Lion (not just on my machine but every Lion box). Has Apple peaked yet?
