OS X :: Can IMac Record While Sleeping?

Feb 28, 2008

I need a cheap way to video/audio/ record on my iMac somehow...

I have sleep apnea-- and have spent thousands of dollars and years to determine the effectiveness of one sleep apnea apparatus after another to lessen my throat collapsing and me choking at night.

I can't afford a 375.00 home test -- or even an 85.00 oximeter report all the time.

I heard of someone using a video camera to photograph themselves at night to show their MD what was going on.

Is there a way I can plug in my iMac 17" screen with the Intel Core Processor (1.83 GHz) pointed at me while I sleep so I can get me on a video conference-- or imovie-- or just record the sound somehow... Ideally--- if something can just record me for 7 hours in semi darkness-- and then I can run it on fast forward to see when I have the cessation of breath-- that I can email to my MD.

OS X Yosemite :: IMac Tries To Log Out When Sleeping

Dec 2, 2014

Whenever my Mac (it happens on two different ones) is awaken from sleep, it seems the machine was attempting to log out. If there was an unsaved file and I wake the machine it says it timed out to log out waiting for me to have saved it. At that point I just cancel the logout.

This happens on an iMac 2013 and a new Mac Pro as well. Is there a setting I am missing?

IMac :: Not Sleeping And Screensavers Not Activating?

All of a sudden my iMac has just started not sleeping after the time its supposed to and the screensaver wont turn on when its supposed to. I havent installed any new software, its just happened out of the blue, I can still use hot corners to activate sleep and the screensaver but id rather have them activate by themselves. But they're not, and all of my System Preference's sleep and screensaver options are fine. Why wont my Mac sleep and/or turn on the screensaver after set times?

OS X :: Second Monitor On IMac Not Sleeping Properly

Jun 25, 2009

I have a second monitor (Dell 20 inch widescreen) hooked up to my 24 inch iMac, and while I'm running windows, when the iMac monitor sleeps, it sleeps. But, in Leopard (v10.5.7) whenever the iMac monitor sleeps, the secondary monitor does what a monitor usually does when the video cable is unplugged (does the whole factory test thing with the box of red/green/blue randomly moving around.) Is there any way to make it sleep?

IMac :: Display Not Sleeping/mouse Active?

Dec 6, 2009

I've just recently noticed that my iMac display won't go to sleep, despite my energy settings should turn it off after 5 minutes of inactivity. The only difference I can think of is that instead of my Mighty Mouse, I now use a Microsoft standard USB mouse. Is the Microsoft mouse somehow keeping the iMac "active"? What else could just suddenly stop my iMac display from turning off automatically?

OS X Mavericks :: 10.9.4 - IMac Waking Up Unprompted While Sleeping

Sep 2, 2014

I am running OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks on a 27-inch Mid 2011 iMac. Prior to upgrading to Mavericks, I would go to System Preferences_Energy Saver and set Display Sleep to 1 minute. This would keep the computer screen turned off at night, but would allow for backups with Carbon Copy Cloner to function. (My Computer Sleep setting is set to Never, Put Hard Disks to Sleep when Possible is checked, and the remaining two items Wake For Network Access and Start Up Automatically after a Power Failure are not checked.

However, after the Mavericks upgrade, my iMac wakes itself up without any prompting. This occurs when there are no other programs running. Even after putting the machine to Sleep from the Apple Tab, it still wakes itself up with no programs running, etc.

I also checked the settings in System Preferences_Accessibility and the Voice Over, Captions, and Speakable Items settings are off.

After running the Terminal Application with the command line syslog |grep -i "Wake reason" I get the following results:  syslog |grep -i "Wake reason"Aug 28 00:34:54 kernel[0] <Debug>: Wake reason: EHC2 My understanding is that this means that a USB connected device may be waking the system. Accordingly, I disconnected all USB devices (forgot the devices in USB Preferences), except for my Wireless Apple Trackpad. However, the same problem occurs.

OS X :: 27" IMac - Sleeping External Hard Drive

Apr 14, 2010

I have a 27" iMac with four USB external hard drives attached. The drives are working fine, but one of the drives takes a long time to wake up after it hasn't been used for a while. The other drives are accessible from the Finder almost instantly, but this one drive causes the spinning ball for about 10 seconds before it is accessible. Not a BIG deal, but it happens all the time even after relatively short periods of inactivity.

I thought maybe I could uncheck the "put the hard disks to sleep when possible" option in the Energy Saver preferences. But this would presumably affect all of my drives (including the internal) and that might lessen the longevity of the drives, right? Are there any options for just turning off the sleep for this one drive, or perhaps a way to shorten the wake time?

Intel Mac :: How To Record Video From Digital TV To IMac / What Cables / Applications

May 28, 2012

I have a Panasonic Viera (2006) digital TV. It has every possible port on the back (and even ports on one side.)The TV is connected to a digital TV tuner/hard disk recorder unit. The tuner also has a ton of ports. What do I need to do in order to send video from the TV to the Mac and record it on the Mac?(Either live TV or video playback from the hard disk recorder.)With my old analog TV, I used the Interview XLR8 USB video capture device with the Interview application or BTV application. (I think even Quicktime could record from the XLR too.)Seems digital TV doesn't work with the XLR8. Is that right? I tried the XLR8 with various combinations of inputs/outputs but can't seem to get any video to appear on the Mac.

I see that HDMI is one way out from Mac out and view on the TV.I also have a VCR and DVD player connected to the TV via a switcher box. With the variety of digital and analog outputs from these devices, seems I should be able to get video from the TV into the Mac.

IMac :: How To Keep Display Sleeping While Keeping External Display Active?

Jan 23, 2008

Just wondering if anyone could help me figure this out.

I have my 40" flat screen plugged into my imac via VGA cable to mirror the image.

I'm just trying to have the imac display sleep while I play a movie full screen through the external TV.

I've tried two different ways but both have failed.

1-I set up a hot corner in the imac to sleep display but this results in both the display and the TV sleeping.

2-I just set the power settings to sleep after 1 minute. This works but then If a movie is playing the computer won't go to sleep.

OS X :: MBP Not Sleeping?

Jun 19, 2009

I have santa rosa 2.6 mbp with recent firmware update running Leopard 10.5.7.

It seems since then MBP will not always sleep when told to via screen menu in top left, it hangs on a bluey grey screen instead of transitioning to normal black power/lights out screen for sleep mode.

Only way to fix is by holding power button down..

There is an old thread about same problem but with no solid conclusions as to why so i though i would see if anyone has any new ideas as to why this is happening?

Hardware :: Don't Know What To Do About Sleeping

Aug 7, 2009

I have been using my Black 2006 MacBook religiously like this:

1. Startup in the morning around 9:00 am,

2. sleep wake sleep wake wash rinse and repeat the whole day till...

3. Around 11:00 pm a full shutdown at night.

Then a full repeat of 1, 2, and 3, everyday for the past 2 years +.

I have a new idea, because I have a serious routine I go thru, setting up my work environment, that takes about 45 minutes to an hour every day in the morning after step 1 above. The new idea is simple, I want to leave the MacBook running, in sleep mode of course, over night. Leave it all setup and just resume where I left off instead of starting up every morning.

Does anyone have any experience running like this? I shutdown every night and I haven't had 1 problem with my MacBook. I just don't want to have any problems. I think that this style of workflow won't be any stress, but with this setup I would never shutdown or restart unless I seriously have too. Restarting just wouldn't happen... it's just I think of my machines as alive, and I feel like it would suck if it never got that refresh feeling of never shutting down and being completely off for a 8 hours.

Is there any way to find out in some log what this could be?

Also, mac os x does not want to stay asleep. I put it to sleep before turning in myself and every morning the screen is fully lit.

PowerPC :: G5 Shuts Down Instead Of Sleeping

PowerPC :: G4 Wants To Shut Down After Sleeping?

Mar 25, 2008

My aging G4 Quicksilver is still very operable yet have had mysterious problems with mouse tracking, USB ports not being recognized and now the machine wants to shut off after being asleep for some time. Someone suggested that it could be a voltage regulation problem, but service personnel have not been able to duplicate the problem with a bench test. In short, when I have a startup problem (the startup button will start to glow, at startup and then the light goes out and the machine fails to boot) or if I find the machine turned off after I left it to sleep at night or a few hours during the day, I will open the case and shut it. This little nudge seems to be a temperary fix. Nervous it does make me that my time is short with this trusty box.

MacBook Air :: How Long Does Your AIR Last While Sleeping?

I am a new MBA Owner, not even a week only yet but like everyone I'm confused how I lived before without this thing, it goes everywhere with me! My post pertains to power management. I have been taking the AIR with me everywhere but just closing the lid and stowing it instead of turning the machine off. My question is how long will the AIR last in Standby mode? I understand it depends on how much you use it on a daily basis but do some users charge it in the morning and just pop it open throughout the day like a cell phone? Do some users actually turn the machine off each time?

Mac Pro :: Cyberpower UPS Won't Wake Sleeping?

Mar 10, 2009

Mac Pro: 2 x 2.66

UPS: CYBER POWER CP1500LCD, USB plugged directly into MP, using OS X Energy Saver prefpane (no 3rd party programs)

Everything is fine when the MP is awake and running normally.

But if I sleep it, then kill power to the circuit the UPS is on, it won't wake up. If I unplug and replug the USB cable, it causes the MP to wake and the warning about power failure pops up.

Any ideas? It's not a crisis as the MP will sleep on battery for quite a while... but I'd still prefer it to wake and shutdown gracefully.

MacBook Pro :: Not Sleeping On Lid Closure

Aug 13, 2009

I have a 2.2 15.4" MBP which will not sleep upon closure of the lid as of today. I just picked it up today from the Apple store where the full top was replaced due to a display problem. Searching here and on other forums, I found a number of people with this symptom, but with different causes. The computer sleeps normally when set from the apple menu. I tried resetting the PRAM. no change. I ran a small magnet along the right side of the screen with no effect. When I run the magnet down the right side of the computer, the computer sleeps when the magnet passes around the bottom of the speaker grill and awakens when I remove the magnet. It would seem that the sensor in the base is functioning. Is the top only a magnet? How likely that there could be no magnet or a misaligned magnet in the the top panel? Compounding the issue is that I had replaced the hard drive after I bought the computer, so when I returned it for service I put the original back in. When I picked up the computer I turned it on and off to check it out. Then I reinstalled the larger drive. It was only after this that I experienced the sleep issue, however I never tested the sleep when I picked it up from the store. My thought is that since running the magnet along the bottom case causes the computer to sleep that my opening the case for the hard drive exchange isn't the problem, unless it's possible that the reed can move in the bottom case and is misaligned there.....

MacBook Pro :: MBP Not Sleeping After Inactivity?

Sep 12, 2009

Noticed that my new MBP with 10.6.1 wasn't going to "sleep" after the time specified in System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Computer Sleep. Closing the lid or choosing 'sleep' from the apple menu worked fine. After playing with it a while, I _think_ I might have narrowed down the issue:

First, a couple of questions to see if the problem I'm seeing is only my own, or a common issue.

If you are having the problem, is your MBP unibody? with SD slot or expresscard slot?

Are you using the Apple factory HDD or an aftermarket one?

How I fixed the issue: I had the option selected on the same preference pane to "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible." If I unchecked this item, the machine would sleep after the specified time of inactivity (Actually, it would take about 30 seconds longer while the machine wrote the memory contents to the HDD.)

If you had the problem, does this fix it for you? If you did NOT have the problem, does checking this box create the problem for you?

OS X :: Sleeping Is Better Or Worse / Shutting Down?

Feb 8, 2010

i might get the new MBP once it comes out and i wonder what's better when I'm not using my Mac overnight and so on, turning it off or just sleeping it? Apple clearly states in every manual

Quote:

If you arent going to use your MacBook Pro for a couple of days or longer, its best to shut it down.

What's better for the Computer life? What does sleeping mean? It just turns Hard drives and the screen of or does it save the state of the computer on the HD and it almost turns off? The first time i read i say "Oh BS i'll turn it off every time i don't use it, now i want to know the truth

MacBook Pro :: Its Not Sleeping On Lid Close?

Jun 19, 2012

I'm having a strange problem with my MacBook Pro. I just began using it with a second display (with the lid open, of course), and ever since I started doing that, my laptop will intermittently not sleep when I close the lid (while it's disconnected from the display). What happens is that I close the lid and the Apple logo becomes dark, indicating that the display is off. The white light on the front stays on, however, and then, suddenly the Apple logo on the lid will light up again. After this, one of two things can happen. Most of the time, the screen and the computer both go to sleep after about 30-45 seconds. Sometimes, however, it seems to get stuck with both the display and computer on. This concerns me because I travel a lot, and I worry that the computer will overheat in the bag if I put it in while it hasn't gone to sleep.

MacBook Air :: Shutting Down Instead Of Sleeping - OS X 10.9.4

Sep 2, 2014

I am running the Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28) and have a macbook air, 13 inch, mid 2012.

I am in no way an advanced user of this computer only used for browsing internet and some college work

Recently i have noticed a small niggling problem, that my mac is shutting down when left idle for a time, instead of going to sleep like it always used to do.

Now when i come back from being away i have to restart it up and at times have lost windows ive been working on.

I tried to alter some of the settings in the Power saving option but it doesnt have anything related to the shutting down of the computer. I used to be able to close the lid and it went to sleep but  now i think its shutting the laptop down too.

Obviously the quick start up time on the mac, and the option to put it to sleep means this isnt a massive deal but i was just wondering how to fix?
