OS X :: Screen Saver Not Activating?
Jul 14, 2009
This is really annoying me. What could cause my screen saver to not activate?I've got it set to activate after 3 minutes. I just can't think of a reason why it's not working. I've just reinstalled Leopard (not because of this) and I had the same problem before.I did wonder if the iStat menu's were keeping the screen saver from kicking in (it monitors my CPU and memory uses so is changing constantly) but I tried uninstalling it and it continues to 'diss me'!

so this has happened twice now in the past month, my mb is in screen saver mode and i wake it up to find that the color is off in the screen. meaning that the color settings changed and the screen has a swashed out blue tint to it. first time i restarted and all was good, second time i clicked on the preferences icon and then the screen went back to its normal setting. my normal setting is not the factory one but one of the ones that people said makes the screen look better.
so what gives, is the integrated chip dieing on me?
oh its a unibody that i got when they first came out, 2.0 processor one all factory

When my MacBook Pro 13" i5 goes into screen saver mode, which is black, it won't return to normal mode. Tried all keys, trac pad, closing the lip and re-opening it, and it won't respond. The only thing that works is holding down power button for hard shutdown, then restarting it. It has happened 8 times in the last 2 weeks.

I have a Quad Core Mac Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.4. I've been having this issue for the past couple of weeks. Basically I have my monitor set to turn off after after 15 minutes of inactivity, my Mac Pro is always on. After 5 minutes of inactivity my screensaver comes on and stays on until my monitor turns off. When I move my mouse to wake my monitor, sometimes an image from the screensaver appears onscreen for a few seconds and then disappears when my desktop appears.
I have repaired Permissions, rebuilt my drive using Disk Warrior, installed the 10.6.4 Combo update but the issue remains. An image from the screensaver doesn't always appear when I turn on my monitor, this issue is sort of random. Usually my desktop appears right away with no static image from the screensaver.

None of my 3rd party screen savers and working after installing snow leopard. I used to use fenetres volantes but when i try and select it i get the message:
"You cannot use the Fenetres volantes screen saver on this computer. Contact the developer of this screen saver for a newer version."
Are there any good screen savers that work on snow leopard?? And why are old screen savers not working on snow leopard?

Running OS X Lion on an Intel iMac with 4GB.
When I call up system preferences and set the screen saver to "never" and remove the check next to "Use Random Screen Saver", it doesn't stay that way. I set it, then go back to the system preferences pane, and call it up again, and it's still set. However, once I exit the system preferences, then come back into the screen saver, it's been reset to where the random screen saver is checked again and the screen saver set at 20 minutes.

I was hoping somebody could lend a hand here and tell me how to put my Serene Screen Aquarium Screen Saver as my desktop. I love it and want to be able to work in my aquarium, so to speak.

So I've bee tinkering with my energy preferences in order to get the best battery life I can, I've turned down the brightness to 1, my keyboard back light, to 1 (when I'm watching a movie in a dark room) and I've set it as the 'better battery' option. But now i'm a bit confused. What's the point in the screensaver if you can set your display to sleep (which i'm sure would save more energy). Is it just to look pretty?
How does everyone have their notebooks set-up to get the most out of their battery? Lastly, the 'better battery' option in energy preferences, does this do anything apart from adjust the display/computer sleep? I read that it reduces processor power hence the 'better performance' option.

So there's this great hidden feature of OS X that allows you to set your screen-saver animation as your desktop background, but it is a Terminal command and it requires Terminal to be running in order to continue executing it. Here it is: Code: System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background So the million-dollar question is → Does anybody know of a way to keep this running even after you quit Terminal? Yeah I know, it's a waste of CPU cycles and battery power... but my Mac is plenty fast and is a desktop machine so I'm not concerned about that. So how about a Terminal command to made the above Terminal command not require Terminal to be open in order to continue?

I'm in the process of updating our server from 10.4 to 10.6.5. And I've noticed a very disturbing problem. First, I don't need a lecture on enabling the root account. I have a strong password and appropriate security measures in place (both physical and configuration wise), and I understand the risks.
Under 10.4, I was able to set the Security Preferences of the root account to "Require Password Immediately After Screen Saver Begins". Worked just fine and dandy. Under 10.6.5, when logged in as root, this option seems to be ignored. I have run a repair permissions, verify disk and both report no problems. It also seems to ignore the "Log out after XX minutes of inactivity" as well.

Is there a way to make it so that instead of my screen saver turning on, I can have the display turn off? I know I can set it to automatically do this after a few minutes, but I use a hot corner to turn my screensaver on, and would like to turn my display off when needed instead. I see no reason to keep the display powered just to show a pointless picture. I know I can hold down the decrease brightness button until it goes all the way down, but is there another way? I have a Unibody MB.

Just got an iMac yesterday. Today when I turned on the iTunes screen saver, the screen turned black, and wouldn't respond. I held the power button for several seconds until it turned off, and then turned it back on. Everything was ok until I went to configure the screen savers. As soon as I picked the first one, the preview screen turned gray, and the wheel started spinning. I used force quit on it, and tried loading a different screen saver, and same thing happened.

I've got an animated GIF file that I'd like to use as my desktop wallpaper. I can't figure out how to set it up. If that isn't possible, how can I set it so the GIF file plays as my screen saver, as I've heard of applications that can use a screen saver as the desktop.

My screen savers (any of them) only run for a couple of seconds before returning me to the desktop or any applications running before I turn it on.
I've set the top right corner of my screen (expose') to be the Hot Corner for turning on the screen saver.
That works normally, but it just keeps on turning off shortly after =[
Testing the screen savers in System Preferences make it work but I really don't want to go all the way in there every time to turn it on...
I don't know what's wrong.
##UPDATE## I've found the answer to my problem. It lies in an app called Caffeine. I can either click it so it shows an empty cup or update the app to a more friendly version to my OSX and quit it.
I hope this can help anyone in trouble because this is a really understated issue (at least with Snow Leopard! since it has compatibility problems with the old Caffeine app).

A few weeks ago I bought my first MacBook air (13 inch).Â
I was setting up my desktop and screen saver settings, and selected "Vintage Prints" for my screen saver, using some pictures from iPhoto as the images to be displayed. I selected the screen saver to start after 5 minutes. However, after 5 minutes of my laptop being left untouched, the screen just goes black. If I hit a few random keys, it will turn back on again, I type in my passcode and continue using my computer as normal, but I don't want a plain black screen, I want my Vintage Prints screen saver. If you know anything I've done wrong, a setting I forgot to click or why my laptop has this problem

Under System Preferences, when I try to choose a pictures folder for a screen saver, I am choosing a folder that has sub-folders with all of my pictures that aren't in iPhoto. Each time, the whole computer freezes up and I have to reboot. Force quit won't even work. I am on a MacBook Pro, using OX 10.6.2 This used to work just fine prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.

I wanted to use a screen saver which is a cool clock since I do not have any alarm clock or anything in my room, and being that my MBP is always on, why not make it a clock when im not using it? I was wondering if it would be detrimental to my screen if I never let the display sleep and leave the black and white clock screen saver on all the time? Would it really make THAT much of a difference to the life of my screen?

After the screen saver starts (set to go on after 1 hour), my MacBook locks up 90% of the time when I attempt to wake it up. I sometimes hit the trackpad and sometimes I hit command. It is hit or miss on which one will work.
I have to hold the power button to restart it.
I have it plugged in all the time when it's at home. Under energy saver I have both settings set to go asleep after 2.5 hours.
I have no issues when I close the lid to put it to sleep.

I have to delete .plist files..and it usually starts working right away. (com.apple.systempreferences.plist and com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.plist) I've tried resetting the PRAM, etc. The problem gets fixed, only to return about a week later. My screen saver is always set to turn on after 3 minutes.
