Mac Pro :: To Use Internal Sata Connectors To Connect An Optical Drive?

Dec 5, 2007

Has anyone used one of the internal sata connectors to connect an optical drive? Part of me thinks that's what they were put there for, under the optical bay. I'm after a Blue Ray Drive and loads of them are SATA.

MacBook Pro :: Upgrading 15.4" 2008 Internal SATA HDD To SATA II?

May 5, 2012

Im considering purchasing a higher capacity internal hardrive around the 750Gb/1Tb mark. However my macbook is the early 2008 model, and it seems the majority of hardrives are SATA II, having speeds of 3Gbt, which my mother board may not be capable of (apparently only 1.5Gbt) From researching and reading some reviews of others who have purchased internal drives on Amazon UK, some have had difficulty due to this problem, but have been able to fix the issue with a firmware update reducing SATA II drive speeds to 1.5Gbt.

Questions I have: Do all SATA / SATA II internal hardrives need a firmware update if replacing on to a new computer?(If so, would I need to look for a specific firmware update for the specific drive I intend on buying? And if you're in the knowledge would you mind posting links to these updates?)What is the process of updating the firmware i.e. would I need to put firmware on external usb hardrive 1st, then upload it to macbook after installing new internal drive (if it boots up my OS that is) etc.     Would a 'hybrid' (disk+solid state) drive be compatible with a macbook as old as mine?Do I need to update my operating system to OS X Lion first, or can it be done after installing the drive?

my current laptop hardware:

Power Mac G5 :: Difference Between SATA And SATA II / Compatibility

Dec 18, 2007

I'm looking for a new HD to replace the original, now failing Maxtor drive in my G5 tower (1.8 Ghz dual processor, purchased in Aug. 2004), and have just about settled on the Western Digital Caviar SE16 series. It seems there are two types -- SATA and SATA II -- and I'm not sure about how to make a decision on which particular WD model to buy.

Will either type work in my machine? Or would the SATA II have potential compatibility problems? I read somewhere in these forums that someone with a G5 had bought an SATA II drive, and it wouldn't run with his system. (He said he had to reset some jumper switches to reduce the transfer rate of the drive ??, but now I'm told elsewhere that SATA drives don't have jumper switches.

Information:
1.8 DP G5, 1.5 GB RAM w/ Superdrive
Mac OS X (10.3.x)

ITunes For Mac :: How To Use Mic With RCA Connectors

Dec 3, 2014

I use iTunes and Nicecast to do an Internet radio show.  I have tried using a usb headset with an attached mic.  However, the sound is rather tinny compared to my old headset that I used on my PC.  Are there any connectors I could buy where I could use my old rca headset and have a usb plug for my iMac?  Even if there is such a connector, will it work, or sound any different?  Just wish I could plug in the headset and mic directly into the Mac.

Mac Pro :: Are There Extra 4-pin Power Connectors?

Dec 29, 2010

I bought a PCIe eSATA card for my Mac Pro and have installed it, and the system sees it and I'm able to install drivers, but disks aren't showing up when i plug them in.

There is a 4pin power connector on the board as well, but I think that's just so it can power external devices via the 2 power plugs it has on the back.

Are there extra 4pin power cables inside the tower, or a place for me to plug some more in?

Mac Pro :: Radeon 4850 Power Connectors?

Aug 10, 2008

I have bought a Radeon 4850 graphics card to play some games in Windows under boot camp. The card comes with a mini 6 pin power connector that connects to the graphics card and supplied lead has at the other end a 4 pin power connector to go into the computer's power supply by the looks of the diagram in the box. My question is do I need to connect this to the Mac Pro power supply? The ATI 2600 card in the machine doesn't look like it connects to another power supply.

If I do need to use this then I can only see two small power connectors on the motherboard near the fan, does anyone know anywhere in the UK that would sell a compatible power lead?

When attempting to install myself, I started to hook the new screen in and noticed I have what I believe is to be 2 power connectors (the connectors with the round pencil lead size connector) where the old screen only had 1. The data connectors were identical.

Do I have the wrong screen, do I use only 1.

I see Seagate & WD have announced these but I'm struggling to find many available to order. Only the WD Green one appears to be even offered as an internal option. What is more it is more expensive buying the internal drive than buying the external USB one.

Mac Pro :: What SATA Cables Need To Connect

Nov 6, 2010

Recently I tried installing a 2.5" SSD in a 3.5" enclosure (Icy Dock) in one of the internal drive bays in my Mac Pro. The enclosure was defective, apparently, because the SATA ports on the enclosure didn't quite line up with the internal SATA ports in the MP drive bay. Unfortunately, I pushed a little too hard to get it in and I ended up bending the metal brackets that the black plastic SATA port is screwed on to in the Mac Pro.

The result is that the SATA port is now bend down at about a 10% angle, which is enough to prevent me from sliding a hard drive in and connecting it. I've tried to bend it back to the normal angle, but I wasn't successful.
