is installing an ssd into a mini the same as a regular sata drive? i had some problems with a mini upgrade, wondering if i did something wrong during the hdd upgrade

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking of upgrading my HDD on my new Mac Mini(2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo) and I'm wondering if this is possible. I would like to clone the old to the new without having to buy a USB or Firewire to SATA adapter. Would it be possible to disconnect the Super Drive(CD/DVD) and connect up the new drive, use Super Duper to clone, then replace the old with the new and reconnect the Super Drive?
I've searched the forums to see if anyone has tried this but I didn't find anything. I'm not even sure if there is a second SATA port that would work for a HDD. I know the Super Drive is a SATA because it's listed when I look at system info.
I've seen a lot of folks using USB or Firewire to do this so that's my backup plan but it would seem if I can get both drives connected this would be pretty straight forward.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two drives in my Quicksilver 2002 G4, one is a 250GB which can be fully used, the other an 80GB. Can U rid both of these drives and install two SATA 1.5TB drives? I do not want to use the PCI slots for a SCSI card and wire additional drives that way, because the transfer speed will be limited to 40mbps I believe. I have a Sonnet card a dual PPC 1,8Ghz card, a PCI USB 2.0 card and have other open PCI slots, but finally ran out of storage, and have a use for this machine to hold a LOT more. Other than the transfer speeds possible on SATA, are there any other differences between the original IDE (ATA) drives? Do they connect the same way?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac OS X install on a hard drive which I've removed from my system due to installing a new SSD with a brand new install of OS X. I'd like to use the old 500GB drive as a storage/backup drive, but the file system/all my data is still intact on the drive. This could be useful as I want to keep all my data and would save me having to copy across to another drive, format the entire disk and then copy it all back.
I'm just a bit worried about what to do with the system files that were on there... can I just move all the files I want to keep out of the usual Mac home folders and then just delete all the system folders as if they were never there? Or do I have to re-format/re-partition to get the most out of the 'new' media drive?
Being all of my life a 'PC' user with knowledge I now realise I have been missing out in life (and neglectful of the prospect) of being a Mac owner. I know this will change everything! I would like to buy the 27" Imac buthave held back because of all the problems related on this forum. What I don't quite understand is what are the main reasons a lot of you are fitting the SSD Drives for and is it worth it?

this may seem strange to ask but i recently purchased a 1 TB drive and formatted it correctly to use it as a time machine archve.
after a few HOURS my 160 gig mac primary disk was backed up.
i then created a second folder entitled "not time machine backups" and am copying my iphoto library etc to it.
i plan on using that drive to store my photos from now on. it this ok?
can i use this so called "time machine" drive as a second hdd? i figure as long as i dont actually touch the time machine folder, i should be ok, right?

I am not interested in picking up a 15" MBP and once question that I have kept on asking myself is whether or not to go with the less memory of the SSD or just get more memory with the older hard drives. My question is if I go with the default hard drive can you swap that out and use a SSD drive later on? Or do they both fit into the MBS's differently?

I messed around with the Time Capsule configuration and finally have a green light, yay! BUT, I was hoping it would show up on my desktop like the other drives.The Time Capsule: Is connected directly to my Mac Pro via a cat 5 cable. It is showing a solid green light. I have wifi turned off. I have a time machine set up with a western digital 2TB external drive. I see it show up in my finder side bar as a shared device. When I right click it the TC icon in the side menu and select open, the window shpw "not connected" at the top. (Even thought the light is green)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to upgrade my wife's Mac Mini (2007, 1.66 GHz Core Duo, model T2300) with a new HDD. I've done that a couple years back, but times were less complicated. Here are my questions:
1) I hope a 7200 rpm drive will improve performance, without generating more noise than a 5400 rpm drive. Is that a correct assumption and would you recommend that?
2) Looks like many of the 500 GB 7200 rpm drives are SATA II. Will that be compatible with the plugs in the machine? Will I have to set any kind of jumper pins (I've never done that, though)? 3) My plan is to naturally do a time machine back up of the current drive to use it to build the new one. However, I still need to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The Mac mini came with a Tiger install disc. How do I get to SL with the least trouble? Do I need to start with the original Tiger disc, then use the Leopard disc and finally upgrade with the SL disc or can I use the SL disc right away?
i'm about 9gb into my 200gb backup, and its been going 3.5 hours. i always knew this first one would take forever, i should have bought the firewire version i knew it.
anyway, does anyone know if i can still access my shiny new Western Digital drive as a regular external hard drive now i've set it for time machine?

However my macbook is the early 2008 model, and it seems the majority of hardrives are SATA II, having speeds of 3Gbt, which my mother board may not be capable of (apparently only 1.5Gbt) From researching and reading some reviews of others who have purchased internal drives on Amazon UK, some have had difficulty due to this problem, but have been able to fix the issue with a firmware update reducing SATA II drive speeds to 1.5Gbt.
Questions I have: Do all SATA / SATA II internal hardrives need a firmware update if replacing on to a new computer?(If so, would I need to look for a specific firmware update for the specific drive I intend on buying? And if you're in the knowledge would you mind posting links to these updates?)What is the process of updating the firmware i.e. would I need to put firmware on external usb hardrive 1st, then upload it to macbook after installing new internal drive (if it boots up my OS that is) etc. Would a 'hybrid' (disk+solid state) drive be compatible with a macbook as old as mine?Do I need to update my operating system to OS X Lion first, or can it be done after installing the drive?

I have a 1Ghz PowerPC G4 iMac and want to delete everything and start again with Leopard. (it seems to be within the system reqs.) Problem is the DVD drive isn't functioning properly. It sees the OSX DVD but won't boot from it. Question - What's the best alternative method? Create a boot firewire disk?
