My 20 inch iMac (g5) won't boot.
The chime plays, screen lights up but goes dark again and nothing more happens.
I can hear that the dvd rom is powered (the little eject thingy plays as always) and the HD spins up.
So far I've reset SMU and PRAM (yes it does the rebooting and plays chime again).
I acquired an iMac G4 PowerPC with a 20" flat panel. System powers up but does not boot displays Apple logo screen and busy indicator. I have tried various commands safe-boot and it does not seem to work screen never changes. No Apple chime on start-up.

Ok I got my new 21.5 inch but every time it boots up, it takes 45 seconds on a white screen then another 30 after the apple appears.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently reinstalled a clean Tiger on my old MDD G4 with the intent on giving it to a friend of mine in Oregon. Everything was smooth here in Los Angeles. Got the OS on and running sweet... 10.4.11 combo update... all's well.
I drive up to Oregon, set it up in his office using his old CRT monitor and power it on. It chimes and manages to find the Tech Tool eDrive recovery partition, but not the OS on the boot drive. Then, seconds later, screen of death/kernel panic and no boots or startup chimes thereafter.
Steps I've taken:
I have reset the PMU
I have removed all peripherals, including viddy, SATA adapter and all but on stick of RAM
Tried every stick of RAM by itself
No startup chime -- just a fan for a few seconds then a super fan kicks in... no signal to monitor at all.
Strange symptom: at times power was making it to the drives, and other times not. (determined by me putting my hand on the drive to feel its vibration or lack thereof during boot).
Do I need a new PSU? And if so where to buy?

I have a lovely secondhand 12 inch Powerbook G4. It won't boot but will just chime and go to a grey screen. I can't boot to safe mode but I can get into Open Firmware I have reset PRAM and the power manager. I don't have the install CD but I borrowed one from a friend with the same model and it wouldn't boot from that.
View 2 Replies View RelatedLate last night, I ran into some problems with my iBook G3. It's the 700 Mhz model, with 384MB of RAM. Nothing else special in terms of hardware config (unless an Airport card is special). OS X 10.2.8.
Basically, the computer seemed to hang and I did a hard reboot, and upon starting up I got a folder with a flashing ? .
I can't seem to find my Install disc 1 to run Disk Utility or just boot up - hopefully I will find that when I go home tonight (or maybe I left it at my parent's place), but I checked using the Hardware Test CD and it didn't detect any problems.
I am having problems opening the CD drive, so I've had to open it using a paperclip. Sometimes it doesn't appear to be using the CD.
I also have run the Micromat test CD that came with Applecare (of course this machine is almost 4 years old so that's finished...) and it detected a problem with the Read Buffer last night, but then I guess the battery ran out while it was on the last test.
This morning, I ran the Read Buffer, Write Buffer, and Volume structure tests and the first two passed very fast (unlike last night), but the Volume Structure test failed. I'm not surprised since I've been aware I have issues with this before. I tried to repair before going to work but at one point it seemed to hang so I gave it another hard reboot.
Last night, I would sometimes get the apple logo with the spinning "clock", and sometimes I would get the ? but it would never get to the login screen.
I have a mid-07 Santa Rosa MBP. When I turn it on, nothing comes on the screen (not even backlight), but I'll hear the startup chime and 2 seconds later, it reboots and does the same thing. Here is what I have tried:
1. Reset SMU
2. Reset PRAM
3. Replacing HD
4. Replacing PRAM/CMOS battery
5. Tried booting off DVD (but it reboots too fast after the chime)
My mini "starts" without chime when I press the power button on the back. The fan starts, the light in front goes on and I hear some clicks which could be the hard drive. The screen remains black (no signal) and the mini does not respond to the USB keyboard power button. It does not start when pressing it and will not power down if I press it for any length of time when it is on. Pressing the power button on the back for some time shuts it down.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem getting my G5 to boot. Half the time when I turn it on I get no chime. The other half, I get the chime but the boot process does not continue. If I leave the computer on the fans begin to progressively get faster and louder after about 5 minutes. I've tried starting with various USB and Firewire components unplugged and have even gone to just a keyboard and mouse. No change. Can I get the computer to boot from an OSX CD? How do I open the tray? etc.

Although this isn't a very important problem, I have noticed on my early 2K8 Mac Pro the Boot POST chime will not play through external speakers. Is there a way to enable this, as it is awfully tinny from the internal speaker.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I was just there, using my computer, doing nothing out-of-the-ordinary. I decided to open up a program (Yahoo! Instant Messenger, I think it was) and the computer went nuts. I completely froze...nothing I tried worked. So I shut the computer down and tried rebooting it. It chimed and went to the white start-up screen with the apple...I let it sit for about ten minutes to let it restart. Still the white screen. I shut it down and tried it again. Same thing.
Is my computer dead? What might I be able to do to fix it? How much might it cost?
I have a MacBook 4,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo processor 4GB Ram. It is taking over 10 minutes to boot up past the gray apple screen when I turn it on. First I cleared the PRam (?) then I checked the disk using Disk Utility Verify, and it said the disk needed repairs. So I ran the disk repair and it said it was unable to fix the errors on the HD.
I did a little research and tried booting into the Single User mode, then running /sbin/fsck -fy. It said that it found errors but could not fix them. I ran it two more times as suggested and got the same result each time. I then tried rebooting and now instead of taking 10 minutes to boot up, it takes about 5 minutes on the gray apple screen and then just turns off. I started in Verbose mode to try to troubleshoot the error and it appears the last thing to come across the screen before power down is a message "Apple Yukon 2: RxRingSize <= 1024....etc".
I decided next I would run the Apple Hardware Tester. The test came back with an error code "4SNS/1/40000001:IG0C-0.265". I am very good at searching the web but I could not find any errors that had the IG0C or IGOC or any combination at the end, but plenty of 4SNS/1/40000000(1) errors with different endings. From what I can tell people are saying anything with 4SNS/1/4000000 is a logic board failure, but this computer was literally just booting this morning until I did the /sbin/fsck -fy.

I like to use my iMac 24" at odd times and wish to mute the startup chime (or at least make it quieter) so I won't wake up my spouse. Apple Tech support helped me do that when I had 10.5.8 but they deleted several cache files buried deep within the OS. My tech support has expired and I wonder if any of you can help?
View 18 Replies View RelatedI just installed Leopard on my iMac PPC G5. It calls for a shut down at the end of installation which it did. Now it won't power back on. Every time it gets to the starting chime, it shuts down. It was running fine before the installation of Leopard and now it's basically dead. I can't even get the disk out of the drive now and I'd like to. Is there a way to get it out?

Some more info... Intel Imac 17" (late 2006 model), 512 mb of RAM, running 10.4 (I think). I am not familiar troubleshooting macs but I am troubleshooting PCs.
During an upgrade, power was interrupted and when rebooting, the chime sounded, but screen remained gray.

Yesterday I decided to Install Windows Xp on my Mac. I tried to partition it but BootCamp said, "Verifying failed. BootCamp can't partition disk." So I started reading about this problem on the Internet and I found out that I have to use the Mac OS X Installation Disk and use the Disk Utility to "Repair" the disk. I started Disk Utility and clicked "Repair". Many files were missing so it tried to repair it. So now when I start the Apple-logo and the loading-circle is "frozen", so it just loads and loads and loads and loads, and nothing happens. I decided to format the disk from Disk Utility but I can't format it! I can't do nothing! So now I cant start my Mac! If it is possible to take a backup or something before I format it, or keep the files it would be lovely!
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was doing a routine maintenence and Disk Utility is telling me I have a few block counts askew. Everything seems to be working fine ( on the surface of things ) but like to be anal and would like to do a repair. However, I don't have a Recovery partition and the App store has decided that I haven't purchased Lion although I did, I can show you the bank statement. I installed a new hard disk not so long back ( I guess this is the reason why the App store decided I didn't purchase Lion!? ) and reinstalled from a Time Machine backup it wasn't seemless but I'm techy enough, to make it work, just not a big fan of spending my days learning terminal commands.I have a mid 2009 MPB so can't do internet recovery, the Recovery Disk Assistant won't let me create a Recovery Disk on an exernal drive since, yes you've guessed it, I don't have a Recovery Partition.
Am quite happy to reinstall as long as it doesn't compromise my data but can't find the 'restore my purchases' button on the app store else if there is a less than obtuse ( and none-sketchy ) method of creating the partition HD.
My Macbook is starting to get really slow. I've tried Onyx and it told me that the startup volume had to be fixed. But I can't boot my install DVD by pressing "C" in the startup.
Is there another way to repair the disk?

Never had any issue with the device and this seems to have happened all of a sudden. Installed an SSD a few months ago, and just realised the ssd did not have a recovery partition. However I connected my older hardrive via USB to access recovery which seemed to work fine.
NOTE: for the past few weeks, every now and then I was unable to power the device off and whenever this occurred, there seemed to be a few bugs (ie unable to empty thrash-error 50 and enable to increase/decrease volume/screen brightness). However, holding the power button and restarting it seemed to have fixed it.
Had the same issue but this time around MBP failed to boot up.

My MacBook is unable to boot. Whenever I try to boot, the spinning circle and the progress bar appears on the grey screen, but when the progress bar reaches about 40%, the computer shuts itself down. I started in Verbose Mode and tried AppleJack, and it said my harddisk needs to be repaired; but AppleJack is unable to do that. (Error Messages: "Invalid node structure" and "Incorrect number of thread records) I then tried to startup with both Recovery HD and Mac OS X Install DVD and ran the Disk Utility on both of the startups. At the First Aid tab, I selected my Hard Drive (not the Hitachi one, the Macintosh HD one) and clicked on Repair Disk. The error messages I got from Repair Disk were:Invalid volume file countInvalid node structureThe volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk..disk, and restore your backed-up files. And, lastly, the following popup message appeared:Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD"Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. Not being sure how to back-up my files using Disk Utility, I plugged in an external HDD to my USB port and clicked on the Restore tab in the Disk Utility. So I have a 1st Gen G5 1.8 Ghz imac. I had a bad power supply and got it fixed under Apple's warranty extension. Since I had it fixed it runs way warmer than it used to. The fans are also always on. Any idea on why this is and what can be done to fix it?

My imac will not boot from the internal hard drive (Intel processor) When I use disk utility to try and repair the disk, I get error messages and it won't repair. I can see the HD but cannot repair it. When I connect using target mode with my mac book pro, the hard drive does not appear on my host (macbook pro) computer. I have reloaded OS X (Leopard) onto a firewire external drive and can boot my imac that way but I can not find my original internal Macintosh HD. Will disk warrior be able to help with this scenario. I would really like to access that internal Macintosh HD and retrieve my files.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy MBP recently had a bunch of problems with the logic board and speakers. I brought it into the Apple Store (on Monday) and they gave me the option of them sending it into a repair center, or them repairing it locally in store. I requested that they sent out just because I was curious to see how long it would take. To my surprise, my MBP arrived, fixed and as good as new on my doorstep today. That's amazingly fast for sending it out to a offsite repair center. The repair center is in Philadelphia. I live in Maine. You do the math. When I've had things repaired locally in the Apple Store it's taken weeks to repair instead of days because they need to order the parts.
Anyways, the point of this thread was to suggest to people that they choose the offsite repair option. It's amazingly fast, and it saved me a trip to the Apple Store (they shipped my MBP directly to my house).
I have a 2 week old iMac 27", i7, 2tb Hard Drive, 16gb RM
In the second week the boot up times became very slow.
I would turn the machine on and get the chime within 5 seconds or so.
Then just a black/blank screen.
Eventually after about 10mins I would get a white screen then it would boot up normally.
Now the machine just doesn't get to the white screen. So I get the chime and then just darkness. It does sound like the machine is on (usual quiet imac whirring).
I've tried various key commands when I turn the machine on including pressing C with the install disk in the dvd drive and the alt, control, P, R pram reset.
I've also tried unplugging all the cables, leaving the machine for a minute and switching back on. I did manage to perform the PRAM reset once. I reset the machine and it booted fine.
But now when I switch it on just darkness.
I've called after sales and will try to get the machine replaced but in the meantime is there anything I could try that might make the machine work? I need to do a remix this weekend (deadline Monday) so really need to get it working.
Recently got a week 8 x4 i7 27" iMac. When running Windows 7 x64, sometimes randomly the screen will fill with pink squares and just freeze and shutdown. It looks like a graphics problem but I could be wrong.

I have my pbook g4 in target disk mode and I am trying to make a superduper backup but I get "Error starting permissions repair for disk1s3 Powerbook-G4-#1: Operation not supported for the Mac OS X version on the targeted disk (-9950)".
Disk utility doesn't have repair permissions enabled. So, I 've only done a repair disk on the target disk which a journaled hfs+.
I've got two iMacs in my posession currently from getting replacement machines. Both have screen issues as follows: iMac A - dead & stuck pixels, feint grey horizontal bar running along bottom portion of screen, bottom left corner has noticeable backlight bleed. iMac B - dead & stuck pixels, yellow tinge in bottom portion of screen. So here are my questions. Which iMac should I keep and submit for repair? (does it matter and why or why not?) How does the actual repair get done? For example, if I submit iMac B for repair, could I end up with a grey bar or backlight prob like in iMac A?
Are there multiple layers to the display when they fix specific issues? For example, let's say the dead pixels are on one layer while the yellow tinge is on a different layer, or are both issues on the same layer? I ask because if there are two or more separate layers, there is more of a chance to mess up so I may want to submit the iMac that has the least amount of issues.
Lastly and most importantly, has anyone submitted their iMac for screen repair for these issues and got it back 100% repaired? (no dead/stuck pixels, yellowing, grey bar, backlght bleed) These are #4 and #5 in terms of the number of replacements I've gotten now and I'm sick of it so I may opt to go for repair on either of these existing machines instead of going for replacement #6. But do you think a 6th replacement would be better than going for repair on either of these? Or not?
