MacBook :: Tried To Repair Using Disk Utility - No Boot Up

Feb 2, 2009

Yesterday I decided to Install Windows Xp on my Mac. I tried to partition it but BootCamp said, "Verifying failed. BootCamp can't partition disk." So I started reading about this problem on the Internet and I found out that I have to use the Mac OS X Installation Disk and use the Disk Utility to "Repair" the disk. I started Disk Utility and clicked "Repair". Many files were missing so it tried to repair it. So now when I start the Apple-logo and the loading-circle is "frozen", so it just loads and loads and loads and loads, and nothing happens. I decided to format the disk from Disk Utility but I can't format it! I can't do nothing! So now I cant start my Mac! If it is possible to take a backup or something before I format it, or keep the files it would be lovely!

MacBook :: It Won't Boot After Trying To Repair With Disk Utility, Cannot Boot In Safe Mode

Jun 11, 2012

I have a MacBook 4,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo processor 4GB Ram. It is taking over 10 minutes to boot up past the gray apple screen when I turn it on. First I cleared the PRam (?) then I checked the disk using Disk Utility Verify, and it said the disk needed repairs. So I ran the disk repair and it said it was unable to fix the errors on the HD.

I did a little research and tried booting into the Single User mode, then running /sbin/fsck -fy. It said that it found errors but could not fix them. I ran it two more times as suggested and got the same result each time. I then tried rebooting and now instead of taking 10 minutes to boot up, it takes about 5 minutes on the gray apple screen and then just turns off. I started in Verbose mode to try to troubleshoot the error and it appears the last thing to come across the screen before power down is a message "Apple Yukon 2: RxRingSize <= 1024....etc".

I decided next I would run the Apple Hardware Tester. The test came back with an error code "4SNS/1/40000001:IG0C-0.265". I am very good at searching the web but I could not find any errors that had the IG0C or IGOC or any combination at the end, but plenty of 4SNS/1/40000000(1) errors with different endings. From what I can tell people are saying anything with 4SNS/1/4000000 is a logic board failure, but this computer was literally just booting this morning until I did the /sbin/fsck -fy.

MacBook Pro :: Failing To Boot Up Despite Disk Utility Repair And PRAM

Jun 2, 2014

Problem: MBP frozen on boot up screen with Apple logo and turning gear (which freezes after a while aswell)

Solutions attempted: disk repair via custom recovery- disk utility, PRAM

Device: MacBook Pro 15" (early 2010) running 10.9

Additional info-

Never had any issue with the device and this seems to have happened all of a sudden. Installed an SSD a few months ago, and just realised the ssd did not have a recovery partition. However I connected my older hardrive via USB to access recovery which seemed to work fine.

NOTE: for the past few weeks, every now and then I was unable to power the device off and whenever this occurred, there seemed to be a few bugs (ie unable to empty thrash-error 50 and enable to increase/decrease volume/screen brightness). However, holding the power button and restarting it seemed to have fixed it.

Had the same issue but this time around MBP failed to boot up.

OS X Mavericks :: MacBook Pro Only Turns On In Recovery - Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk

Sep 12, 2014

Macbook Pro running on OSX Mavericks is having problems.

Today I turned my Mac on, and it started up with a loading wheel and a loading bar. When the loading bar finished, the Mac turned itself off. I tried many times, same happened every time. I then went into OSX Recovery, started repairing Macintosh HD, but the error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair Macintosh HD" came up and now I don't now what to do.

Is there any way I can back up my files in this situation? Is there any way I can repair the disk without having to erase all data and reinstalling OSX? Or do I really need to bring it to a Apple Store for repair?

MacBook Pro :: External Hard Drive - Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk

Jun 27, 2014

I have a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus Drive which was working perfectly fine until I plugged it into a USB hub. It detected it while in the hub and I was able to get files off of it, but when I ejected it from the hub and put it back into the USB slot on the computer it was not detected by finder. It shows up in the disk utility and I clicked verify and repair and it says:

Verify and Repair volume “Seagate Backup Plus Drive”
Checking file system
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.

Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

Is there any way to get this to work properly again? Or if not is there a way for me to recover my files on the external hard drive?

I have a Macbook PRO late 2011 running OS X Mavericks.

MacBook Pro :: Lion On Ssd Crashed - Disk Utility 'cannot Repair The Disk'

Apr 25, 2012

Fortunately I got a time machine backup. And its restoring the drive while in Lion recovery mode. Here's what happened... I dont have a router a my place at the moment and so my two phones (iphone 4 and htc android) connect to my internet using my MBP's wifi via internet sharig. For some reason they were not able to get an IP from the mbp. After doing some wifi swtich toggles and forgettig & rejoining the network, i decided to reboot all my devices. I shut down my modem, phones and restarted my mbp. On reboot, after the chime, it showed an unsusal 'progress bar' under the apple logo. The bar progressed to about 10% and then the mbp just powered off. This happened several times even after PRAM and SMC reset.

So now i booted with cmd+r pressed and in recovery mode ran a 'verify disk'. It said the verification stopped and that i should repair the disk. When i tried to do that it said the disk cannot be repaird and that i should back up as many files as possible and attempt to format the disk and restore it with time machine. It is precisely what im doing at the moment.

1. Mbp wont sleep even when internet sharing is off

2. Mbp wont lit the onboard display upon opening it in clamshell mode until i removed the 3.5mm audio cable of my speakers from the audio out port!

MacBook :: Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk

Mar 12, 2012

I just saw that the amount of memory left on my HD just dropped around 60GB, so I used the "Verify Disk" option on Disk Utility, and the output was: Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”Performing live verification.Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.Checking extents overflow file.Checking catalog file.Checking multi-linked files.Checking catalog hierarchy.Checking extended attributes file.Checking volume bitmap.Checking volume information.Volume header needs minor repairThe volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk(such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.

I don't have the disk right now, so is there some other way I can repair it, get another install disk, or anything else? I've been thinking of booting up with a Linux livecd, but can it access the HFS+ filesystem?

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Repair Disk Using Its Utility

Mar 14, 2012

Lately, my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) started to slow down even with over 60% disk space is empty and max RAM is installed. It gets slow when using hungry programs such as Photoshop CS5.

I used the disk utility first aid and fixed all permissions that were shown with errors. When scanning the disk, I received the message that my disk is corrupt and I need to fix by restarting with command+R keys pressed until the apple symbol is displayed. When the next window shows up, choose disk utility and go from there to fix the disk.

When I performed that, I let go of the Command+R keys after the apple logo came up, the only thing that came up after that was a grey circle with a diagonal line through it and a spinning clock.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk (1 Partition) On External Hard Drive

Apr 24, 2012

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!

Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'.  And it needs to be reformatted.  It's become a read only disk.  When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question.  I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969!  These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.

I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure.  Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state!  Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive?  And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

Intel Mac :: Disk Utility Cannot Repair Disk

Apr 1, 2012

I'm experiencing some problems with my iMac right now, and I'm not sure how they started or what to do to correct them.

1) Computer seems to hang up from time to time while starting applications, or in the middle of some tasks. There's no rhyme or reason or any patterns.

Question: Is there anything I should try to clean up the computer?

2) About a week ago I started using Time Machine to do scheduled backups rather than me manually starting my own backups. Now whenever time machine does a back up, it seems to stop working somewhere in the "Preparing to Backup" stage, and I end up needing to restart the computer manually because the whole system becomes useless. It will no longer complete any backups, even when I start manually.

Question: Why would time machine now all of the sudden start freezing in the middle of the prep to backup stage?

3) I just tried to use my disk utility to check and see if I need to repair the disk and here is what reported back:

Hardware :: Can't Repair HD- Safe For Now/Disk Utility

Nov 5, 2009

I have a 500 GB Maxtor OneTouch 4 USB desktop drive that I use for archival stuff, formatted into a 400 GiB HFS+ and a 64 GB FAT partition. Except when I was upgrading my HD and upgrading to Snow Leopard, I used it as a temporary Time Machine drive in case of drive failure during the transfer process.

All of a sudden, I get this message:

"Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Maxtor 400 GB."
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."

The FAT partition appears to be fine.

So my questions are- what may have caused this, and how stable can I expect the drive to be in the near future?

I've already started transferring data off the drive, but I was really hoping to wait until Black Friday to get a new drive. Will information on the damaged partition be "safe" for the time being?

Equally interesting to me is what could have caused this. I haven't run Time Machine backups to the drive for at least a week, and have done no other major file operations besides reading movie files. The drive isn't making any sounds that would indicate drive failure, and it seems to read just fine- was this just the result of a random software glitch that corrupted the data structure somehow? Interestingly, I was checking the size of various folders, and I noticed that the Backups.backupdb folder, which should be around 65 GB last I checked, reported as taking up over 230 GB of space (when I started the backups a few weeks ago, there was only 80 GB of space to begin with.)
