IMac :: Turning Off Display And Keep System Running?
Sep 24, 2010
Windows user here that just ordered a 27" QuadCore iMac. Usually on my PC at home, whenever i'm not using it I turn off the monitor but leave the computer itself running most of the time (I run a lot of torrents, VNC, etc). Is there a way to turn off only the display and keep the computer running like I normally would on the PC?

As you can tell by the thread title I've got one of the latest model iMacs and I'm running an LED Cinema Display as a second monitor. When it gets to the late hours I like to watch some movies on the Mac so I figured the Cinema Display would be a nice addition to do the job.
Now here's my issue: if it's late and I'm watching movies I tend to not have any lights on, but having one of the displays on means having both of them on, what I'm wondering is if it's possible to sleep one display while allowing the other to stay active so I can watch the movie without the light from the other one distracting

I went to turn on my Power Mac G4 this morning and only the fan would come on. No light. No computer start up sounds. No screen. Just the fan. I tried a new battery and that's not it.

I was talking to a friend last night and he was saying him mom had a 4 year old iMac that she had barely used. Her windows computer died and the local computer shop moved everything to the iMac and when the mom complained the iMac was slow the computer shop told her it had blown caps. To me blown caps wouldn't cause it to run slow, lock up and be unreliable I would believe but not slow. Has anyone had a Mac just run slow because of blown capacitors?

Recently I started suffering pretty bad from color wheel load time where safari was getting glitchy and taking forever to move. I tried to cold start it to see if a refresh would help. Well it white screened, and wouldnt exit the loading screen. I reset the ram memory with alt ctrl p and r; this did nothing. Eventually I kissed all my music projects and logic pro 9 good bye, and reformatted from the boot disc. When I went to use it, I got out of the white screen, but was ridiculously slow.
Thinking maybe I didn't do the partition right, I reformatted again, erased the entire drive, set the partition, and loaded 10.6. Any time I open safari, it gets glitchy, and incredibly slow to the point I cant even restart. I cleared the memory again and this still did nothing. I purchased and installed new ram; still nothing. Coming from windows a reformat usually takes care of things. I have no idea what I can do at this point. Its a 2007 24" 2.4 ghz 2gb RAM.

My 2010 Macbook Pro running on OS X 10.9.3 is having issues turning on. When I boot it up it makes the chime like normal and the grey screen appears with the apple logo. A couple of seconds later the screen just goes black and it shuts down.Â

I have a 20" iMac mid 2007 2.4Ghz, 320GB, 2Gb machine running Snow Leopard. Today I turned it on and it was running fine. But around three hours of using it suddenly froze. I had to force the turn off using the power button. When i turned it back on it took about 4 mins to get to the login screen. Once I logged in the spinning wheel came up and the only think that loaded was the Spotlight sign. This kept happening until about the third time of turning it off and on. When it finally completed login. But it is now extremely slow and it just about freezes when I open more than one application.

I thought I won't buy a new imac, because of the glossy glassdisplay. And, yes, I took a look at the imac at a gravis-store. I have seen it in real life and I don't like it.BUT: As I have read, it is easy to remove the glass, so my question is: Has anybody already done this and is working now with a glassless imac? What are your impressions? Do you see any drawbacks (apart from fact, that it will look a little bit nerdy

I've seen so many posts about this, but with the limited time I have between system freezes, in desperation I come here. I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on desktop IMac. I have plenty of memory, but don't know how to check the hard disk space (I'm an ubernoob). I've run a couple of the mac maintenance programs still to no avail. I get intermittent SBBOD where NOTHING responds and have to do a hard reboot. Doesn't matter what applications are up, as even startup is very slow when in SBBOD mode. Rebooting, then, doesn't resolve the issue. It runs fine when the SBBOD is not present.

Reading the tech specs on the site, seems to imply that the screen on the 27" will accept a displayport in? If so, does this mean that I can finally use the iMac's screen for my HDMI gaming console?

I am looking to for something that will let me take my HD antenna and get it to go to my display. Is there anything that will allow me to do that? I'm just looking for something that'll work with the HD antenna, I'm not really concerned about cable TV or anything like that.

I have a brand new MBA. First week no problems. Now the display doesn't start when I start up the computer. If the display is open as usual, around 110 degrees. If I almost close the display, just enough to get the finger in and start up, the displays lights up. If I then bend it up to approx 110 degrees prior to logging in the display turns black. If I log in when the display is almost closed I can bend the display as I like 100ds of times and the MBA works as usual.

I have my TV connected to my computer so when I'm going to watch a movie I drag it over there. But I don't want it like that all the time, for instance when I play games it's really irritating if I drag the mouse to much to the side it goes out to the TV. How do I turn it off? In Linux and Windows it's no problem at all, but in OS X I can't find that option?

I just received a new Macbook Pro (2012, retina display) and a 27" Thunderbolt display. I am having problems getting the notebook to turn on the display. I called Apple (Monday) and they had me reset the SMC and then the PRAM. After this the monitor was recognized and worked fine for the rest of the evening. However, when I turned things on yesterday evening the monitor would not turn on, and resetting the SMC and PRAM (multiple times) has no effect.

i have 2 LCD's hooked to the new Mini as such:
1 going mini display port to DVI adapter to DVI on 19" Monitor (standard monitor)
1 going mini DVI to DVI adapter to a DVI to HDMI on 52" LCD (Samsung TV)
i just sold me iMac and switched to the Mini not only to be able to hide the Mini which i couldn't do with the iMac but also when i watch a movie full screen on the 52 i was never able to turn off the iMac monitor and would have to cover it with a towel so that it was dark in the room except for the 52 showing the movie.
my thought was that with 2 monitors separately hooked up to the Mini that i could solve the turning off the second monitor problem as they would now both have power buttons. besides making it dark in the room i also like to have the monitor off and so that i can have Plex on the 52 always in full screen mode so my wife can just hit "Watch Plex" on the logitech remote and the TV and Stereo switch to the proper inputs and away she goes to watch whatever without having to touch the computer which when both monitors are on works perfectly.

My MacBook has Recently completely frozen, I couldn't even turn it off. I then removed the battery and when I put it back in it was completely dead. I've been told that this is not down to the hard drive. I live 3 hours away from my nearest apple store.

I sold my MacBook Air to a co-worker some months back. Turns out he wanted it so he could do some hardcore media conversion - I'm talking Handbrake and DVD ripping and the whole nine. Upon finding this out, I cautioned him that there was a chance he could kill the lil bastid, he didn't listen, now he says it won't turn on. I advised him to bring it to me so I could take a look at it. Symptom is that the power button does nothing, apparently. Before I get into it, what do others think it might be? Inverter?

My macbook won't turn on anymore it just gets stuck on the apple logo with the spinny thingie, and I've tried everything to get it to work (safeboot, etc etc). The fans are EXTREMELY LOUD too. I also have a crack on my hinge. I'm thinking of getting the hinge replaced by a secondary person, other than apple. But in the apple care warranty it says:b. Limitations. The Plan does not cover:
(i) Installation, removal or disposal of the Covered Equipment, or installation, removal, repair, or maintenance of non-Covered Equipment (including accessories, attachments, or other devices such as external modems) or electrical service external to the Covered Equipment; (ii) Damage to the Covered Equipment caused by accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including faulty

2010 is a big year for me with my iphone 3g contract to expire in july, which means i can finally grab a slice of the fourth Gen Iphone, and my first bite into a Imac computer. Being a long time PC vista user 3 unfortunate years I'am tired of the windows world, yesterday I went to JB HI FI and i got quoted for $3,450.00 AU for an IMAC 27 Inch model which is orginally $3,626.00 AU.
with i7 2.8ghz processor
8gigs of ram
extended warranty and ms office
I'am holding off till tuesday to wait for WWDC to see if there is any news on Imacs. If there isn't I assume that it will be a quiet update, should i wait for the quiet update or buy one after the conference blows over.
