IMac :: Turning Over New Apple

Jun 5, 2010

2010 is a big year for me with my iphone 3g contract to expire in july, which means i can finally grab a slice of the fourth Gen Iphone, and my first bite into a Imac computer. Being a long time PC vista user 3 unfortunate years I'am tired of the windows world, yesterday I went to JB HI FI and i got quoted for $3,450.00 AU for an IMAC 27 Inch model which is orginally $3,626.00 AU.
with i7 2.8ghz processor
8gigs of ram
extended warranty and ms office

I'am holding off till tuesday to wait for WWDC to see if there is any news on Imacs. If there isn't I assume that it will be a quiet update, should i wait for the quiet update or buy one after the conference blows over.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Booting - Gray Screen With Apple Turning Gear Comes On Start Up

Dec 30, 2008

A friend of mine brought over his 14" iBook G4, 1.33GHz, 60GB HDD and 1.25 GB RAM. The problem with it is that upon start-up, the grey screen with the apple/turning gear comes up, then after a few moments a blue screen will appear, though no box showing the start-up process. I've run a few basic diagnostics on this, including the lovely disk utility (which did nothing), I've run fsck, zapped the PRAM, etc, no success as of yet. At one point, I received a screen with alternating folders, one showing the smiley mac face, the other folder with a flashing "?". I cannot replicate this for the life of me. I have attempted to acquire files via TDM, though am not able to see the hard drive despite using 2 different laptops. Possibly the firewire cable itself is spent, though it's brand new! Here is where I become increasingly frustrated: I ask my friend for the boot disks as the ones for my own 12" iBook don't work (for whatever reason). He tells me that he loaded Leopard this summer (currently running 10.5.2, no updates loaded since), then proceeds to bring over boot discs for a MacBook...:headdesk: To begin with, it seemed like the HDD was fried, however, after running disk utility (and not hearing any negative sounds), it does appear that the HDD is fine. I'm thinking a kernel panic, though not sure how to resolve these.

IMac :: Screen Turning On And Off At Random

Aug 7, 2009

I have a 24" 2007 iMac, the first aluminum ones, 4Gb of Ram and a recently upgraded HD to 1Tb (from a 320Gb failed drive). Recently, I have noticed that under some active usage, such as playing World of Warcraft or Excel, the screen will start to turn completely off for 10 seconds, and then back on for 10 seconds. It will continue to do this for about 3 hours, turning on and off every few seconds or 15 seconds. It will mostly turn completely dark but would also sometimes flicker. The curious thing, is that if I continue to keep playing, the screen would cease doing this after about 3 hours and then be completely normal and fine, but the next night.

The symptoms would repeat itself, and would consistently go away after active usage (3 hours or so). Imagine this, as if the iMac itself needs to be "warmed up" for 3 hours before normal usage. It would also appear that if I hit the machine (or tap it), this may sometimes bring a dark screen back to life for a few seconds. I plan to bring it to support, but I just want to get some ideas from you guys as to what this can possibly be.

Some of my guesses:
1) It cannot be software as physically hitting it or my dog barking would affect the rate and speed of the random turn Ons and Offs.
2) It could be a loose connector from my recent transportation of it while upgrading my HD, but then why would it become normal after 3 hours of usage?
3) Maybe something to do with RAM or video RAM? It is faulty, and thus only prolong heavy usage would "run it in" for the session? After not using it for a while, it goes back to its failed state?

PowerPC :: Turning An IMac With LCD Into An Eternal Monitor

Nov 17, 2010

I have a first gen iMac 24 Intel with a dead logic board. However everything works in it. The screen, power supply, isite, speakers. appear to work fine. I got a MacBook Pro to replace it and I wanted to know if there is a way to turn the old iMac into something that is more like the Apple 24 display, even if I need to do electronics work in it.

I am in IT and have access to a lot of dead stuff I can scavenge for parts. I am also an electronic technician, so I should be able to do this. I just dont know what I need to do.

Hunting down info on this topic has come with that there are controller issues. If I can pull a controller out of another dead LCD display that I happen to have, I can see it working. I can even see the possibility of adding the electronics from a USB hub to pipe USB functions over a DVI cable. And get the iSite and speakers working.

IMac :: Use As Monitor Without Turning Entire Hardware On?

Apr 13, 2010

I've never owned an imac since I don't care for the AIO concept due to the fact that when your computer becomes obsolete, you lose the monitor as well, without any good reason. I really need a new computer, and as usual I'm thinking about the mini. The problem is that they are really slow and I need the hardware of the imac. I figured that buying an AIO, isn't that bad if you can still use the monitor even when the computer's hardware is obsolete. I've summed it up to a couple of questions:

1. Can you use the imac as a monitor for another computer without turning the enitre hardware on? Perhaps you can easily mod it, so that the monitor is the only thing working.
2. As a follow-up question, if something goes wrong with the imac, that isn't related to the monitor directly (i.e cpu, ram, hdd, etc..), could you still use it as a monitor for another computer?

If the answers to those questions are positive, I'll probably get a 27" imac.

IMac :: LED Cinema Display / Turning One Display Of Them Off

Sep 15, 2009

As you can tell by the thread title I've got one of the latest model iMacs and I'm running an LED Cinema Display as a second monitor. When it gets to the late hours I like to watch some movies on the Mac so I figured the Cinema Display would be a nice addition to do the job.

Now here's my issue: if it's late and I'm watching movies I tend to not have any lights on, but having one of the displays on means having both of them on, what I'm wondering is if it's possible to sleep one display while allowing the other to stay active so I can watch the movie without the light from the other one distracting

IMac :: Yellow IMac Display/Apple Executive Care No Solution Not Fixed?

Dec 29, 2009

I sent an email to Steve Jobs about my yellow tint 21.5 iMac issues (three exchanges, all affected, resulting in a refund). I got a call from Dena at Executive Care within 24 hours.

She said they are aware of the problem and do not know how widespread it is. According to Dena, the issue is not resolved and that ordering a new iMac will not result in a fixed display.

She said the engineers are working on it now and they are not sure if it's hardware (most likely) or software related. Further Apple stores cannot do repairs because they haven't determined what the issue is.

IMac :: Early 2009 IMac 24" & 30" Apple Cinema Display?

Oct 9, 2009

About 5 months ago I had my Mid 2006 iMac replaced with an Early 2009 iMac and on the whole I am very pleased with it except for one thing ... the glossy display. As our youngest has now commandeered my office I am now resigned to using the dining room which is fine except the only area for all my equipment is the wall opposite the window. The reflection during the afternoon and early evening when the sun comes through is driving me crazy. We have had blinds fitted which now help but still cast a lot of reflections and glare on the screen making reading difficult. I didn?t have this problem with the old matte iMac.An option would be to use a matte screen as a second monitor or even better a 30" Apple Cinema Display thus I can move the iMac out of the way.

IMac :: Compatibility Between 2 1/2 Year Old Imac 24" And A Apple 30" Cinema Display?

I have the Imac Alu 24", 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo with a ATI Radeon HD2600 graphic card with 256MB VRAM. I will be buying a 2 year old apple Cinema display 30" tomorrow from a colleague and would like to know that my IMAC can easily handle supporting this display at its normal resolution and have a crisp and correct image on the larger screen. I know that this older version of the Alu Imac has the older video out display port, but I presume I can convert it to attach to this 2 year old screen as well. Is there something I'll need to do to get this to work?
