View 1 RepliesMy dad recently brought a MacBook Pro but I get the chance to steal this to take to clients. What I would like to do is to use my license for software I use on both the laptop & my machine, can I duplicate the user or migrate the user to the laptop & sync the info when in the same wifi location of my iMac. I know there is iDisk but I'm not paying for that service. I would like to mirror my iMac desktop on the laptop. I'm sure this can be done.

If I wanted to Mirror them onto ONE external 1TiB Drive, what are my options? Is it a backup only type of thing, or are there options to do a real time mirror like RAID-1?

I have iTunes and iPhoto libraries on my MBP that I would like to mirror to my external/Airport HDD so that my Mac mini can access the content.
I've been using iTunes sharing function, but it doesn't sync ratings/play count/etc, and iPhoto doesn't seem to have the option.
I have a 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (24" early 2009) iMac running OS 10.7.3 (Lion) to which I have connected an Apple Cinema Display as an external monitor using a Mini Display-to-DVI adapter. The iMac is set to 1920 x 1200 resolution and the Cinema Display is at 1680 x 1050, and everything looks great until I turn on mirroring. When I do this, the iMac screen loses its nice crisp screen resolution, but the Cinema Display still looks fine. Strangely, the pull down menu for displays in the menu bar still claims that the iMac is at 1920 x 1200 and the Cinema Display is at 1680 x 1050, but I don't think this is the case. Is there any way to keep the iMac at the higher resolution while mirroring?

This happened after I unplugged speakers from outputand plugged in headphones. After done, when I pluggedspeakers back in it stopped working. Headphones no longer
work either. Internal speakers still do, though.I went into preferences and sounds. The external speakers are no longer showing up. Built in output is the only option available. I unplugged everything and turned everything off. Plugged them back in and turned the mac back on. Nothing.

Why does my mac stop downloading files, copying to clipboard, saving files to desktop, etc?
iMac g5 1.9 ghz 17" running 10.5.8. Had a hard drive crash and bought a new one. Loaded new OS leapord. Everything works fine at first, but after the computer has been on for a while, it will stop downlading files, disk verify doesn't work. I can't copy and paste stuff. It seems as if the hard drive is full, but I have only used 32GB of 300GB.
When I restart, it works again, then slowly not. Is it an overheating issue? How do I know if my fan is running? Is it a bad hard drive I put in it? Bought it new with three year waranty.
I am a photographer. My Mac Tower and Macbook Pros display my external hard drives on the desktop. That makes workflow so much easier. I just purchased an I-Mac and have to access the external HDs through the menu. how I can display the icons for the external HDs on my desktop?Â

I've recently starting having problems with my external HD that I use for my Time Machine backups. I'm not able to repair the drive using Disk Elements, so I want to copy some of my backups stored therein onto my Mac HD before I try reformatting the external HD. However, I get the error message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup" when I try dragging the backup folders onto my desktop. Is there any way to salvage the backups before I try reformatting? Â

I have a 24" iMac and it was running fine the other week and now I get this annoying error=36 whenever I try to transfer large files from desktop to my external drives. It goes about 1/4 way with the transfers then stops with the error=36 message. I've tried to reset the pram but it won't let me. It just keeps on restarting to the same gray screen with the single short beep tone over and over until I let go of the option, command, P & R buttons and restarts normally but does not reset the pram.

i am seriously considering using a software mirrored pair (RAID 1) of 1TB WD RE3 drives as an osx home drive. boot drive will be a discrete disk. another drive for windows. full backups weekly to an external drive.
space-wise, this should last me a long time. (lived with a G5 2x2.5 for four years and recently upgraded to an 8x2.8).
anyone out there tried this? satisfied with the performance and reliability? happy with the choice of western digital over seagate over?
I have an external 300gb seagate firewire drive, and I like to keep it attached, and on at all times, as it holds my media files. The problem is, it's constantly spinning down (which I don't mind... I don't like HD failure), the problem is when I attempt certain actions (for instance, putting the computer to sleep (there are many more, I just can't name them all)), my computer has to wait for the ext. hard drive to spin up adding several seconds to whatever action I am attempting to do.
So I guess my question is rather than stop the hard drive from spinning down, is there anything I can do to eradicate the time it takes for it to spin up again?
I purchased a Mac Pro sometime back to use in my office but the person in the office next to me also frequently has use for a Mac Pro and since we can't purchase two Mac Pro's now we decided to set up a system with multiple monitors/keyboard/mouse. We ran a 2nd DVI Cable and a USB Hub over to the other office and use that for a second monitor hooked onto this Mac Pro plus a 2nd Keyboard and Mouse. Fortunately the distance was not too far and it worked out well.
we're having is trying to figure out how to do the Screen Mirroring/Spanning. The Mac Pro has two video cards. Video card 1 is the Nvidea 8800 GT and the 2nd card is an ATI 2600 XT. I have the main monitor in my office which is a 22" Samsung Widescreen hooked up as video 1 on the Nvidea card. The 2nd monitor which is an Acer 19" Widescreen monitor has been hooked up to both video 2 on the NVidea card and even video 1 on the ATI.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my internal HD to my External 3 times a week. I have CCC set to erase the external, and copy everything over each time it backs up. The only problem im having is I can't stop Spotlight from indexing/searching my external drive. Adding the drive to the Privacy tab in the Spotlight Prefs works, but only until the next backup, after the next backup, and a restart Spotlight indexes my External drive again. It's annoying cause when I search for files I get 2 of everything. How the heck do I stop spotlight from searching my external?
View 16 Replies View RelatedI have a mac pro running Leopard with Time Machine backup on an external 500GB FREECOM drive. My issue is that I cannot boot my mac while the drive is connect, because it seems it tries to boot from the external drive and it starts displaying a flashing folder with a question mark in it. So everytime I need to fire up my machine, I need to disconnect the external drive > boot > connect the external drive.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm planning on using SoftRAID to mirror my boot system drive. Softraid allows to ADD another mirrored drive (or more) to an already existing boot drive without the need to reformat anything. From what I've read, it seems this software works well. I don't have anymore PCI slots so a hardware RAID isn't an option for me.
So here are my questions:
1. After I add a mirror drive to my already existing boot drive, will this new configuration cause the volume ID to change, as if it were another drive? in other words, will I have to authorize a bunch of my plugins again because they will think I moved them to another system? Cloning a boot drive doesn't allow to use the same authorization for most plugins. Will the added mirrored drive have the same effect?
2. Say one of these drives fails, and after I replace the faulty drive with a new one, then the software rebuilds my mirror boot drive combo, will the ID change again, or will the current plugin auths still work?
I have so many plugins now, I can bear the idea of losing my boot drive because it takes me weeks to re-serialize my plugins. Half these plugin auths go by BOTH the drive ID AND the Logic Board ID, so reformatting or getting a new drive (or reverting to a previous system, clean reinstalling a system etc) is a nightmare for me. When my boot drive fails It's more worth the trouble for me to purchase another computer and gain the extra speed. I feel the mirrored boot drive is a great solution if I can keep replacing the drives when they fail, for a longer general system life... If the RAID keeps the same ID that is..
Mirroring basically creates a mirror image of any data on a drive as it's created (on the physically seperate mirrored drive)...the idea being that if the drive get's corrupted you will always have the mirrorred copy as a backup...
But what happens if it's not the actual drive that gets corrupted, but rather some of the data on the drive...then you would basically have a corrupted copy of the data on both the primary drive and the mirrored drive, correct?
First I signed in with the wrong Apple ID. Now I'm actually logged into iCloud with the same Apple ID on both my Mac and my iPhone. Parenthetically, I would like to wonder out loud how synchronization of addresses, calendar items and notes ever happened before, with mismatched Apple IDs.Â
The problem is that I don't see that the iMessages I send in Messages on the Mac are mirrored in Messages on my iPhone. It makes me wonder, whether this is beta behavior or whether I still don't have everything configured correctly.

I have a Macbook Pro and iMac on the same network. I'd like folderX on the MBP to be basically mirrored on the iMac. If the MBP goes down or I need to send it in for repairs, I want the iMac to always have an updated version of folderX so I can continue working on this content from the iMac. Then when I get the MBP back, I'd like the MBP to be updated with latest changes from the iMac and then have the MBP once again become the primary and ship folderX updates to the iMac.Â
I believe a Time Machine from the MBP to the iMac might work? I do have a 2TB TimeCapsule and TM is in use on my MBP. But can I only have 1 TM per computer?Â
my external hardrive has decided to stop working! It just wont appear on the desktop, disk utility doesnt see it nor does system profiler register anyhting being there. Its a Taurus Raid II external hardrive with two Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 500gig harddrives in it.
I've tried all of the ports it has on the back as well as plugging it into a different computer made sure that the power souce is legit. Where am i going wrong?
i've been hooking my macbook up to my hdtv to watch hulu, movies etc (using mirroring), but i can never snap my macbook shut or it goes to sleep.
how do i stop that aside from plugging in an external keboard?
I have got a Powerbook g4 laptop which I have had for a while and still are very pleased with. I recently bought a 1 terabite external hardrive to transfer most of my data onto it seeing I have only 80 gig in my internal hardrive. I am also doing this through a firewire cable. I am starting to transfer my music library first seeing that is what is taking up all of the space. All seems to go well until it gets to about 5 gig already transferred and doesn't seem to go any further. When I try and press stop on the copy bar nothing happens. I can't even close the bar if I want to shut down my computer.
