OS X :: How To Stop An External HD From Spinning Down
Oct 14, 2006
I have an external 300gb seagate firewire drive, and I like to keep it attached, and on at all times, as it holds my media files. The problem is, it's constantly spinning down (which I don't mind... I don't like HD failure), the problem is when I attempt certain actions (for instance, putting the computer to sleep (there are many more, I just can't name them all)), my computer has to wait for the ext. hard drive to spin up adding several seconds to whatever action I am attempting to do.
So I guess my question is rather than stop the hard drive from spinning down, is there anything I can do to eradicate the time it takes for it to spin up again?

For the last couple of days my fans have been going crazy, spinning at 6200RPM non stop. I installed fan control last month but the issues just started. When I open up fan control it says my fan should be spinning at 4000RPM. I had smcFanControl installed before and its still installed. My bluetooth module over heated yesterday so I used SMC to rev up the fans. I don't know if that is the issue because it isn't running now. I'll try uninstalling that now.

I replaced my superdisk with a 500 Gb Seagate drive in an optibay enclosure (unibody MBP running 10.6.2). The drive mounts fine on startup, and has not exhibited any unpredictable behavior in the file system, but it frequently ejects and provides me with this unhelpful message:The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off. To eject a disk, select it in the Finder and choose File . Eject. The next time you connect the disk, Mac OS X will attempt to repair any damage to the information on the disk.
Once the drive ejects it is not visible in disk utility. I can hear it spinning continuously, but cannot access the drive. Moreover, I cannot access the drive unless I fully shut down the system and then reboot. A restart is often not sufficient to get the drive back up, but a full shutdown has worked every time so far.
The behavior seems to happen when the computer sleeps. I noticed that it would also happen sometimes if I handled the computer roughly by setting it down jarringly, so I took the whole thing apart, and reseated the drive within the enclosure, but the drive still ejects frequently, about once per day.

So my question is.....has anyone tried to dampen the sound of the hard drive from the inside? eg. putting some sort of cloth or tape on it. I can actually dampen the sound from the outside by covering the palm rest with my palm and pressing down. But I would like to get rid of the sound without doing this.

For a couple of days now the activity wheel on my incoming iCloud/mac.com mailbox won't stop spinning.Mail seems 'extra' active in Activity Monitor but I cannont discern what it is doing very long log file with no obvious crashes or repeating patterns (to my amateur eye). There is no send/receive activity indicated in the Mail Activity pane of Mail just the wheel spinning constantly in my mac.com inbox.I seem to receive all the mail sent to that account so nothing obvious being blocked or missing just the constant activity.
I've rebuilt the mailbox but that didn't help.It has been fine up to a couple of days ago and I've not sent nor received any odd or very large files.

Just today I've noticed that the time machine icon in my menu bar won't stop spinning. Finally, I clicked it and it says that it has been "preparing backup" all day long. I stopped the backup just to see if it was a one-time glitch. One hour later, the same thing happened. I gave it thirty minutes and the entire time it said it was "preparing backup"
How can I fix this? I already tried turning TM on and off, that didn't do the trick.

I have 4 external drives with about 12 volumes on them and it's literally spinning up a drive every 5 minutes, 24x7 when I am not even using the computer. Nothing weird is running, and it's clear the application is exactly Finder. (and rarely, fseventsd). Here is the output of
[code]....
Note the 02:10:12 "all drives spin up" event. That was opening a PDF in Preview. The PDF was in my home directory/Downloads on "Macintosh HD".The rest is entirely Finder; I was doing nothing at all. I'm hearing a spool-up literally every 4-5 minutes. I have essentially given up, and dismounted all the drives until I have need for something on one of them. Of course that kills Time Machine.
Since there is no rime or reason for these accesses, I am NOT impressed with the argument that "drives should spin 24x7, it's better for them".This is a home system, not a server. I know how often I actually need data off these drives - several times a day and many days not at all.So I should use a program to force them to spin 24x7 (by doing more unnecessary accesses)? That's like leaving a hot water faucet open 24x7 to deal with a glitch in an on-demand water heater.
I want the drives to spin down. And stay spun down. And then, when I choose to access something on one of the drives, or an application has something it's going to actually use the drive for (e.g. midnight backups) -- I want it to spin up. Simple enough?I am running 10.5 but my searches tell me Snow Leopard is worse, and Lion is worse yet.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my internal HD to my External 3 times a week. I have CCC set to erase the external, and copy everything over each time it backs up. The only problem im having is I can't stop Spotlight from indexing/searching my external drive. Adding the drive to the Privacy tab in the Spotlight Prefs works, but only until the next backup, after the next backup, and a restart Spotlight indexes my External drive again. It's annoying cause when I search for files I get 2 of everything. How the heck do I stop spotlight from searching my external?

I have a mac pro running Leopard with Time Machine backup on an external 500GB FREECOM drive. My issue is that I cannot boot my mac while the drive is connect, because it seems it tries to boot from the external drive and it starts displaying a flashing folder with a question mark in it. So everytime I need to fire up my machine, I need to disconnect the external drive > boot > connect the external drive.

2007 iMac Snow LeopardAny idea why my external speakers would stop working?
This happened after I unplugged speakers from outputand plugged in headphones. After done, when I pluggedspeakers back in it stopped working. Headphones no longer
work either. Internal speakers still do, though.I went into preferences and sounds. The external speakers are no longer showing up. Built in output is the only option available. I unplugged everything and turned everything off. Plugged them back in and turned the mac back on. Nothing.

I have got a Powerbook g4 laptop which I have had for a while and still are very pleased with. I recently bought a 1 terabite external hardrive to transfer most of my data onto it seeing I have only 80 gig in my internal hardrive. I am also doing this through a firewire cable. I am starting to transfer my music library first seeing that is what is taking up all of the space. All seems to go well until it gets to about 5 gig already transferred and doesn't seem to go any further. When I try and press stop on the copy bar nothing happens. I can't even close the bar if I want to shut down my computer.

I just added a 1 Terabyte drive for both backup and regular file storage. I partioned the drive so I would have a volume purely for backup. Backing up to the drive was taking forever, i searched and found index is the problem. I also found a couple ways to stop indexing. I utilized the touch function, but the .metadata_never_index doesn't seem to take at all. I have since utilized the sudo mdutil function for just the backup volume and this works. However..... Will this permanently leave indexing off on this volume? The drive backs up my laptop so it's disconnected frequently. Also does anyone have a guess to why the never index function didn't work? The syntax looked to be perfect.
touch /Volumes/Obsidianice Backup/.metadata_never_index
Whenever i ran the ls function
ls -a /Volumes/Obsidianice Backup
to check it it returned
No such file or directory

Randomly the volume keys/brightness etc. stop working and i can't open apps or shut it down normally. Everything still works though (can still function in open applications) Anyone know what the problem is? It fixes when I force reset.

I recently installed a VPN.
The performance through the VPN is badly affected by the Airport scanning regularly; often the VPN hangs.
I have deleted the unnecessary wireless networks listed in the Advanced button under Network Preferences. However, the problem persists.
Can you advise how to either stop the scanning or stop it interfering with Internet connection?

I recently upgraded my stock HDD to a SSD and moved the HDD into the optibay. I was hoping that using the command pmset -a disksleep 1 would mean the 5400rpm drive would go to sleep after 1 minute of inactivity and I would get nice SSD silence It usually does but something is making it spin up again all the time. I am hardly running anything on my MBP.
