OS X :: Does Mirroring A Boot Drive Change ID

Dec 24, 2008

I'm planning on using SoftRAID to mirror my boot system drive. Softraid allows to ADD another mirrored drive (or more) to an already existing boot drive without the need to reformat anything. From what I've read, it seems this software works well. I don't have anymore PCI slots so a hardware RAID isn't an option for me.

So here are my questions:

1. After I add a mirror drive to my already existing boot drive, will this new configuration cause the volume ID to change, as if it were another drive? in other words, will I have to authorize a bunch of my plugins again because they will think I moved them to another system? Cloning a boot drive doesn't allow to use the same authorization for most plugins. Will the added mirrored drive have the same effect?

2. Say one of these drives fails, and after I replace the faulty drive with a new one, then the software rebuilds my mirror boot drive combo, will the ID change again, or will the current plugin auths still work?

I have so many plugins now, I can bear the idea of losing my boot drive because it takes me weeks to re-serialize my plugins. Half these plugin auths go by BOTH the drive ID AND the Logic Board ID, so reformatting or getting a new drive (or reverting to a previous system, clean reinstalling a system etc) is a nightmare for me. When my boot drive fails It's more worth the trouble for me to purchase another computer and gain the extra speed. I feel the mirrored boot drive is a great solution if I can keep replacing the drives when they fail, for a longer general system life... If the RAID keeps the same ID that is..

Mac Pro :: System Shutsdown Randomly / Change Boot Drive?

Mar 26, 2008

I just received my 3rd replacement mac pro, the second one (same spec, apple replaced it for me) is here too. I'm trying to get the 'new' one up and running. They are both identical spec - stock Octo 2.8, with 8800GT, 500GB HD, and Airport.

Anyway, I bought a 750gb Samsung F1 on the 'old' mac pro and installed my OS and all my audio software and plugins on there. The 500GB drive holds only the audio data (no OS). Is it OK to just remove one boot drive from the 'old' mac pro, and put it in the new one? The are both the same spec machines...

The reason i ask is because i am getting very scary and random SHUTDOWNS on the new mac pro, all of a sudden - it will turn off, then briefly (for half a second) the fans will spin again, then it will die. It is as if something is tripping the power off, or messing with it at least. It's done it several times now. The first time i was doing a time machine backup, came back to the computer an hour later, and it was off completely. It wouldn't start for a while, then all of a sudden, it did on its own, a couple of seconds after i tried pressing the switch.

I tried to run the apple diagnostic test, and shut down after a minute or so. So i took out the stock 500GB hard drive (only the 750GB left in it now) and i'm running it again. We'll see what the results are. But anyway, has anyone done this? It should be ok to take the drive out and put it back in, right?

Mac Pro :: Mirroring WD 1TB Drives?

Mar 26, 2009

i am seriously considering using a software mirrored pair (RAID 1) of 1TB WD RE3 drives as an osx home drive. boot drive will be a discrete disk. another drive for windows. full backups weekly to an external drive.

space-wise, this should last me a long time. (lived with a G5 2x2.5 for four years and recently upgraded to an 8x2.8).

anyone out there tried this? satisfied with the performance and reliability? happy with the choice of western digital over seagate over?

OS X :: Screen Mirroring / Spanning?

May 16, 2008

I purchased a Mac Pro sometime back to use in my office but the person in the office next to me also frequently has use for a Mac Pro and since we can't purchase two Mac Pro's now we decided to set up a system with multiple monitors/keyboard/mouse. We ran a 2nd DVI Cable and a USB Hub over to the other office and use that for a second monitor hooked onto this Mac Pro plus a 2nd Keyboard and Mouse. Fortunately the distance was not too far and it worked out well.

we're having is trying to figure out how to do the Screen Mirroring/Spanning. The Mac Pro has two video cards. Video card 1 is the Nvidea 8800 GT and the 2nd card is an ATI 2600 XT. I have the main monitor in my office which is a 22" Samsung Widescreen hooked up as video 1 on the Nvidea card. The 2nd monitor which is an Acer 19" Widescreen monitor has been hooked up to both video 2 on the NVidea card and even video 1 on the ATI.

Mac Pro :: Mirroring 3 HDs With 5 Partitions Onto One External?

I have three Hard Drives installed in my Mac Pro. The original one and two aftermarket. They total around 850 GiB. I have them divvied up into 5 partitions. If I wanted to Mirror them onto ONE external 1TiB Drive, what are my options? Is it a backup only type of thing, or are there options to do a real time mirror like RAID-1?

Hardware :: How To Get Security Of Mirroring Hdd Data

Jan 3, 2009

Mirroring basically creates a mirror image of any data on a drive as it's created (on the physically seperate mirrored drive)...the idea being that if the drive get's corrupted you will always have the mirrorred copy as a backup...

But what happens if it's not the actual drive that gets corrupted, but rather some of the data on the drive...then you would basically have a corrupted copy of the data on both the primary drive and the mirrored drive, correct?

OS X :: Mirroring IMac Desktop On Laptop Possible?

My dad recently brought a MacBook Pro but I get the chance to steal this to take to clients. What I would like to do is to use my license for software I use on both the laptop & my machine, can I duplicate the user or migrate the user to the laptop & sync the info when in the same wifi location of my iMac. I know there is iDisk but I'm not paying for that service. I would like to mirror my iMac desktop on the laptop. I'm sure this can be done.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: IMessages Not Mirroring Between Mac And IPhone

Feb 16, 2012

First I signed in with the wrong Apple ID. Now I'm actually logged into iCloud with the same Apple ID on both my Mac and my iPhone. Parenthetically, I would like to wonder out loud how synchronization of addresses, calendar items and notes ever happened before, with mismatched Apple IDs.

The problem is that I don't see that the iMessages I send in Messages on the Mac are mirrored in Messages on my iPhone. It makes me wonder, whether this is beta behavior or whether I still don't have everything configured correctly.

OS X Mavericks :: Mirroring Folder On Two Macs?

Aug 26, 2014

I have a Macbook Pro and iMac on the same network.  I'd like folderX on the MBP to be basically mirrored on the iMac.  If the MBP goes down or I need to send it in for repairs, I want the iMac to always have an updated version of folderX so I can continue working on this content from the iMac.  Then when I get the MBP back, I'd like the MBP to be updated with latest changes from the iMac and then have the MBP once again become the primary and ship folderX updates to the iMac.

I believe a Time Machine from the MBP to the iMac might work?  I do have a 2TB TimeCapsule and TM is in use on my MBP.  But can I only have 1 TM per computer?

Power Mac G5 :: Cannot Boot From DVDs - Defaults To External FW Boot Drive With 10.3.x

Dec 20, 2007

This is bad and old, and full of lessons about backing up. Anyway, internal boot drive crashed a week ago, and internal optical drive is busted. New external LaCie dvd burner works fine, but all attempts to start up from Tiger, Leopard and Diskwarrior installation disks just end up back in OS10.3 on my external LaCie FW drive. I've tried many things: unplugged everything; switched external LaCie to USB (wouldn't boot), unplugged power from internal optical drive so Mac wouldn't look there first (somebody suggested that). Attempts to start up installers from mounted DVDs result in installer screen with restart button, which, when clicked on, results in... you guessed it... boot back to dreaded 10.3 system. Night owls and westcoasters, I am up for hours yet, pulling hair.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: 10.7 Won't Boot Unless Hold Option Key And Select Boot Drive

Apr 27, 2012

Last week I finally upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7, but now my Mac Pro (2008) won't boot properly.  It'll start to boot with the gray screen and the Apple logo, but then the entire screen goes gray and it just locks up there.   However, if I reboot and hold down the Option key to bring up the list of bootable drives that works fine. I've checked my Startup Drive settings and the proper drive is selected. why it won't boot on it's own anymore?  Holding down the Option key is getting old.

OS X :: Software RAID1(Mirroring) On Leopard - How Reliable Is It

Nov 7, 2007

I just purchased OWC External HDD Enclosure that houses two HDDs. I've placed two WD 500GB drives in them and did a RAID1 array using Disk Utility in Leopard. Now I know Mirroring is meant to be like an insurance in case one of the drives failed, I would still have a copy of the data. How reliable and safe is OS X Leopard RAID1 software? This is my first venture into using RAID, and I just want to make sure I'm better off using Software RAID than keeping these two drives in separate volumes. The Data stored in them are my new nephew's/godson's baby pictures from the time he was 3 seconds old up till now. My sister has given this responsibility of keeping all the digital pictures and video safe, so I want to make sure I don't loose this Data.

Mac Pro :: Best Setup For Dedicated Boot Drive? - Possible To Boot From RAID 0?

Jan 25, 2009

I decided that I couldn't wait for Gainestown and ordered a 2.8x8 MP today. I'm going to get another 8GB of RAM (I assume 10GB in matched pairs will still perform at full speed). My real dilemma is a Boot/Storage solution-I'm moving from a Dual 867 G4, so all my current drives, both internal and external are IDE, which basically means I'm starting over as far as internal drives goes. The G4 power supply gave out so I'm getting this external enclosure to put my old drives into for file recovery. As far as new drives go, I can't figure out what to do. I'll spare you my million iterations of drive configs I've sketched over the past two days.

MacBook Pro :: Switching The Boot Drive (want To Boot From The Optibay) How Can This Be Done

Mar 28, 2010

I run SSD/HDD, my HDD in the optibay is broken, I stuck it in a external and it makes finder freeze, it got bumped around too much so I want to put a new one back in the 'correct place' for a spinner, and stick the SSD in the optibay.(I figure the extra 2% of shock protection offered by the orange rubber circle things is worth the trouble of moving everything).

I am also going to buy a WD 3 platter 1TB laptop drive, and I read that they fit fine in the regular spot in MBP's (I'm going to open and measure in a min.)Anyways, there's no BIOS, only EFI, so how to I pick what drive to boot from? with 10.6 is it as simple as holding option down on boot, and picking my 'OSX' HDD, and then it will auto boot from that until I specify otherwise? (I ask because before 10.6 people on here were always talking about how to switch boot drives.)

If you guys have ever looked into the "displays" option when you have a mac hooked up to any other kind of external monitor, there is a "mirror displays" option. When I have these 2 monitors running default mirrored, and go into "Displays" there is no option for unchecking the mirroring box. In fact, there isn't even the "Arrangement" tab. Just "Display" and "Color".

Intel Mac :: Screen Resolution Reduced When Mirroring External Display

May 14, 2012

I have a 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (24" early 2009) iMac running OS 10.7.3 (Lion) to which I have connected an Apple Cinema Display as an external monitor using a Mini Display-to-DVI adapter. The iMac is set to 1920 x 1200 resolution and the Cinema Display is at 1680 x 1050, and everything looks great until I turn on mirroring. When I do this, the iMac screen loses its nice crisp screen resolution, but the Cinema Display still looks fine. Strangely, the pull down menu for displays in the menu bar still claims that the iMac is at 1920 x 1200 and the Cinema Display is at 1680 x 1050, but I don't think this is the case. Is there any way to keep the iMac at the higher resolution while mirroring?
