IMac PPC :: G4 Won't Turn On
Jun 9, 2012
I have a Power Mac G4 that will not start. The power button lights then goes out after a second. Checked lithium battery voltage, it was fine. Reset PMU on motherboard as well.

I don't know what the deal is. I'm trying to install 2 sticks of 2GB into my 7,1 iMac, and the screw just won't turn. I'm using a standard Phillips head, and nothin' doin'. The screw is now starting to strip, so I guess I'm going to have to take this into the friggin' Apple Store just to have them open the thing.

Three of the four LED lights inside the unit light up when the power button is press. When the power button is pressed I hear the chime and the front LED light turns on and the screen does a scroll and the front LED light turns off and a minute or two later the fans turn off.

I know how to dim the screen, and I'm using Shades to help with that, but I would like it turned completely off.
For example, if I'm burning a DVD overnight, I want the screen to be completely shut off, instead of lighting up the room like it's the middle of the day.

I've done some searching and haven't come up with an exact answer to my questions. Hopefully you guys can help me out! My 2008 24" iMac won't turn on. No fans, no HDD, nothing. This happened after a power surge, so I'm assuming it's toast. I took it to the Apple Store and they told me that it is either the logic board or the power supply but couldn't tell me which. It would seem to me that since it isn't doing anything when it's turned on that it's the power supply. Does that seem like a logical answer? If so, I think I'll go on and order the psu from the ifixit store and do the work my self.

My G5 iMac developed problems after upgrading latest updates to Tiger, iTunes, QuickTime, ect.
I am now unable to access apps like system preferences, iPhoto, Safari and others. Also it will sleep but unable to shut down. I'm hopeful a new install of my OS 10.4 disk will correct things but fearful my photos, music and FireFox bookmarks may be lost.
My beloved G5 has been flawless till now.

I am seriously considering the possibility of using the 27in iMac as an external monitor with my MBP when I am home and need the extra monitor space. That would also allow my family to use the iMac when I am away at work or out of town. Since my MBP has a Mini DisplayPort, it should be as easy as connecting the MDP from the laptop to the MDP on the back of the iMac and then connecting the USB for audio? However if the iMac is turned on, how can I use the monitor without the actual computer running at the same time?

my iMac won't turn on - seems dead. It's a white one (out of warranty), and am taking it to a genius bar near here. I think it has to to with the internal power supply, could that be? Doesn't sound like a logic board problem, as it won't turn on. Also, will I have to pay for the genius bar?

Have just got an iMac and am running boot camp - XP Pro. I've turned down the brightness with the boot camp software controller, but the screen is way too bright still. Any other way in XP/boot camp to turn the thing down more (other than sunglasses)? I've googled sans luck.

My G4 iMac has been making a weird fan sound (a flickering sound, as if there were a piece of paper in it or something). Last night I turned it off and the weird fan continued running. I tried to unplug my mac and plug it back in, but the fan just starts right back up. The computer won't start, I've tried holding the start button but nothing happens. I need my computer today to work.

I was watching a movie on my iMac and this box popped up telling me to hard shutdown and restart my computer. Now I can't get it to turn on. When I press power it makes the start noise but the screen stays white. The apple doesn't pop up and it won't load. Trying to put in disks that came with my computer don't seem to work either.

Besides putting a piece of paper over the iSight, is there a way to manually disconnect it so that no one can remotely login from the outside and view it? I am assuming that even a firewall would not be enough. This news story made me think about it: [URL]

How would i turn off the hard drive fan in the new 27 imac, i put the ssd in and the hard drive fan is loud ! i dont think i need it, how would i turn it off? Preferably not by a software, would disconnecting the hard drive fan temp sensor wire disable the fan? If not could i disconnect the fan? If so where is the fan? and the wire that connects it? also i do not care if it is not 'safe'.

iMac G5 17" iSight
1.83GHz
2GB 667MHz SDRAM
My monitor has turned off and will not come back on. Clicking noises and a slow operating speed occurred a few days ago. I have tried this SMU Reset Process below:
from [URL]
1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
3. Wait 10 seconds.
4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
5. Let go of the power button.
6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Upon completing step 6, the computer turns on only to feature the fans spinning at maximum speed and still no monitor display.
Is this a Logic Board issue? The iMac was purchased for $1700 in 2006. Would repair costs be so high that just buying a new iMac would be the better way to go?

This is the most random problem I had with my Mac. I usually keep it on sleep, and last night at 1:30Am it wakes up. The drive spins, but the screen is black. The sleep indicator light turns off, then the computer puts itself back to sleep. It also happened twice this morning. What's going on here?

I left my iMac on overnight last night to finish downloading some stuff. I woke up and all our clocks are flashing, so we must've had a blackout. Anyway, I went to check the progress of my downloads, and the iMac was off. I pushed the power button and nothing happened. No fan noise, HDD noise, nothing. I've been trying for almost two hours now and nothing is working.
