i've looked far and wide for a way to turn the monitor off on my new imac 24", nvidia 8800, running xp and still havent found anything. does anyone know of a way to turn it off? i've tried to set the "turn monitor off" setting to 1 min under power management and it gets ignored. also, i've even written an app to try and turn the screen off based on this: [URL:...] and it is also completely ignored.
View 1 RepliesI am seriously considering the possibility of using the 27in iMac as an external monitor with my MBP when I am home and need the extra monitor space. That would also allow my family to use the iMac when I am away at work or out of town. Since my MBP has a Mini DisplayPort, it should be as easy as connecting the MDP from the laptop to the MDP on the back of the iMac and then connecting the USB for audio? However if the iMac is turned on, how can I use the monitor without the actual computer running at the same time?

My monitor has turned off and will not come back on. Clicking noises and a slow operating speed occurred a few days ago. I have tried this SMU Reset Process below:

1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
3. Wait 10 seconds.
4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
5. Let go of the power button.
6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Upon completing step 6, the computer turns on only to feature the fans spinning at maximum speed and still no monitor display.
Is this a Logic Board issue? The iMac was purchased for $1700 in 2006. Would repair costs be so high that just buying a new iMac would be the better way to go?
My girlfriend changed the user's name and the problems started (iMac wouldn't remeber system settings and denied access to some files and catalogs). When I wanted to fix the problem I probably made a mistake and changed the access settings of some files (finally even hard disk's settings). After this action my iMac doesn't start (the screen is white with the apple logo and nothing happens). Is there anybody who knows what to do now?

I know the "Using imac as external monitor" topic has been adressed in previous posts and it apparently can't be done. But this is slightly different.
I have this Imac G5 24" that is currently out of order. (won't detect hard drives when powered on 90% of the time and when it does i am experiencing ridiculous lag and random shutdowns...not to mention crazy overheating)
I sent it to tech support and after changing the hard drive, power supply etc.. and still not seeing any improvement i just stopped sinking money in repairs and got a new imac.
So now i just have this useless imac laying around and i figured i might as well try and recycle it into a secondary monitor.. I don't mind hacking it open since i have nothing to lose. I was just wondering if it could be done and if so would it be very complicated? I would rather pay a few hundred dollars in wires and IT than buy a cheap external monitor since its already a decent quality monitor and it matches the new imac
My wife has an iMac (I don't know any other way to identify it e.g. model number), and she has this 3rd party calibration software that I'm trying to use. I am not used to a Mac, and I cannot find the display settings for the monitor. There are no buttons on the monitor, and when I go to preferences, I can only find the brightness control. I've googled this and cannot find a clear, simple answer. I have used every version of Windows (currently on 8.1 on my PC) and it's easy for me on that platform. I suppose it's just that I don't really know how to navigate Mac OS.

I have an imac with netgear router, i want to turn off the security wep i setup, because with it my other computer PC in the other room will only connect at the 2.4G speed of 54 while my mac on the Dual N will connect over 100. Before I put the security setting on the PC would connect on N also. I am not really worried about security, live in rural setting and do not do online banking or buying. I can't seem to find where Mac stores the info to go back to NO security. Have spent all day trying to do this. By the way my macbook connects on the N and my toshiba lapbook connects on the 2.4. Can two be connected via the router to N at the same time? i thought they did before but now i am not sure.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Pro 8 core that is almost 2 years old. Still running Leopard and 10.6 I believe.
This morning all worked great, and after a lunch break the 30" Apple monitor won't turn on. The power lights on the monitor. We substituted an older 22" we have and that won't work as well.
We tried both video inputs on the back on the computer and still nothing.
When we turn on the computer we hear the Apple signature sound and even though there is no visual on the monitor, this computer has a QuicKey keystroke to shut down the computer and this works.
Is this a graphics card failure?
resolution is set @ 720p...so i hooked up my mini to my hdtv via HDMI but the fonts are hard to read. i mean they're still readable but hard for the eyes. i have my pc also hooked up via HDMI and fonts are perfectly clear and readable but not teh mini.
are there extra settings that i miss or somethin?
Does anyone know if it's possible to dim my late 2008 macbook's display more then the lowest setting allows? It seems way too bright in the dark even at the lowest setting, plus I would like to save more battery if possible.

View 2 Replies View RelatedEarlier this summer, my iMac suffered a crashed Logic Board. Thankfully AppleCare took care of the $900 it would have cost to replace it.
Earlier today I put my MacBook Pro to sleep by closing the lid. About 2 hours later I went to open the lid and the monitor never turned on. The white light is on in the front. I restarted it and the light remained on and the monitor did not turn on. I unplugged all devices and restarted and still no luck. The Number Lock key lights up and the sound works fine - but no display.
Could this be another failed Logic Board or a failed chip set from here:[URL]
Are there some other types of methods I should try (PRAM Reset, etc.) If I have to bring it in, thankfully AppleCare covers this Mac for another year. What horrible luck - college just started.
2012 Mac mini with a Thunderbolt display, recently updated to 10.9.3. Normally, it's set to never sleep, but to have the display turn off after 15 minutes with no screen saver. Since the 10.9.3 update, it won't turn off at all. I've tried changing the settings back and forth with no results. I've also gone into Library->Preferences->SystemConfiguration and deleted the PowerManagement.plist file.
I can turn the power off with control-shift-eject, but I'd rather it happen automatically. Is there something else new that came along with 10.9.3 that is preventing monitor shutdown?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to rig up a system for work that will allow me to remotely monitor an industrial job site for a few hours each day and control some equipment. I've got the ability setup to remotely control the equipment, but I need a dedicated camera on an engine tach and pump presser gauge. My original plan for a remote camera is not working and time is running short, so I thought I could end up using the new MB I got recently with the integrated webcam, and VNC into the computer. I tried it out today and it seemed to work well except for two things, both related to the display being on.
1) There is no power available so maximizing battery life is a must
2) I was getting a bit of a glare off the gauges from the screen that made viewing a bit difficult.
I think both would be solved if I could run the MB with the screen off, but I don't know if this is possible.
I'm currently working out a plan to use my old Macbook as an AppleTV equivalent- I've found out about atv4mac and it sounds ideal. However, the laptop will spend the whole time running with the lid closed, is there any way to totally turn off the monitor? I can turn the brightness down all the way, but it's still on, seems like a bit of a waste!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using a Mac Mini (running 10.3.8) connected to an old View Sonic E95 monitor. No problems except that every time I leave the computer for a while it goes to sleep and "forgets" what display it is connected to. When I hit a key or whatever to reawaken it, the display resolution has been re-set to "VGA 800x600" and I have to tell it to "Detect Display" again..
Any clues? I have looked on the forums and Google with no success .
I currently have a MBP1, 1 running 10.6.4 on an external monitor with the ideal resolution at 1920x1200. From time to time, when I wake my MBP from sleep through external keyboard/mouse to have it run solely on the external monitor, it sets the display at 1600x1200, so everything seems squished vertically. After a fresh reformat, the problem persists, though it is less frequent. It's just a minor annoyance that I can't seem to find a solution to fix permanently. I usually have to go to safe mode and adjust the resolution back to normal. Alternatively, only sometimes if I put it back to sleep and wake it up again with the external keyboard, it will detect the right settings.

I would like to know how to turn off the macbook display without having to close it. I want to know that because if i don't close the macbook, both displays are on. If i close the macbook, the computer goes to sleep and then i press some keys on keyboard and the mac wake. In that point, if i open my macbook the display is turned off like i want. But i don't want to have to close the macbook all the time, and i don't want to leave the macbook closed because closed the temperature goes high.

I plugged everything in properly and it seemed to work right away at my pleasure. However, then I quickly started getting real pissed off.. If you guys have ever looked into the "displays" option when you have a mac hooked up to any other kind of external monitor, there is a "mirror displays" option. When I have these 2 monitors running default mirrored, and go into "Displays" there is no option for unchecking the mirroring box. In fact, there isn't even the "Arrangement" tab. Just "Display" and "Color".

Then after a week it expanded to two inches white line, then suddenly it turned all black and I can't see two inches of my screen from the right edge. I was reading some forums and found out that I can use a dell monitor as a secondary monitor, but is it possible to use the dell monitor as the primary monitor in case the black line will spread throughout the entire iMac screen? so the iMac would serve as a stand alone processor like a regular desktop?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have seen people all over the internet saying that their MBP monitor would not turn on, but I have not seen my situation before. I used the computer a week ago (it's a work machine and I'm a part time intern) and both the external and internal monitor worked. I shut it down and when I came back the computer booted up to the external monitor but gave no video on the internal.
I shut down, removed the external monitor (connected by DVI cable) and rebooted. Nothing came up but when I connected the external again it worked fine. This had happened before, but when I shut down and rebooted without the cable connected it came back on immediately. I'm just hoping its not a bad graphics card or something that needs to go in for warranty.
