10.8 and 10.9 become a headache copying/moving files/folders between disks. After download selected images to my Imac from cards I used to move all of them to a local network backup disk (attached to a linux OS)
I don't do this anymore from a year ago: annoying warnings like "the file ... is in use" (not in use, even had been downloaded) stopped move; repeated procedure with the rest of the files included the 'used' one, over and over again and finally, after 12 times or so all files had moved. 100 files to move, stop, 80 files to move, stop, 60 files.......
Same problem moving files between disks attached to the same iMac.'You have to provide an admin password...." -> Continue Password set and again 'File ... is in use' (not in use, it is just backup file)Reseting the Mac. Worse
.'You have to provide an admin password...." No 'Continue' option, just only 'Ok' that will do.... nothing. My solution: Terminal: sudo mv source target
I guess Finder has been tought to make life easier, isn't it?
I have an iMac 2011. Processor: 2.7GHz Intel Core i5/ Memory 4GB
OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.1
After I change my OS from Mavericks to Yosemite, moving files between folders is very slow.
For example, if I move one jpg file in Desktop to Pictures folder (or just any other folders like Trash), it takes about 3 seconds.
When I was still using Mavericks, it made that Ding sound and transferred files right away. However, now, although it makes the Ding sound right away, the file is still there for 3 seconds.
I tried to clean up my mac using many apps, but they never fixed this problem.
I've also tried what I saw on this one thread. OS X File Transfers Very Slow
Go->Connect to Server then type "cifs://server-address" but it says there is a problem and did nothing. (maybe different issue)
I have a 4 yr old macBook Air with solid state disk capacity 120 GB. It has loads of music and about 12000 photos on it and the disk is getting full.I also have an iPhone 4s.I am treating myself to a new iMac with 1 Tb drive.I guess it would be sensible to move most photos and music to the new iMac.(I have a 500Gb hard drive I use to back up the macAir)
Re photostream - does it store photos on the Macbook itself? Can I set up my phone to send photos to the iMac instead of the current macbook air? How?How do I keep duplicates of some of the photos on the macbook?
So i've just started using Mac and i've downloaded a few tunes into the downloads folder and then moved them to music. I cant remember what the file names were so can no longer find them. Is there a way to organise the files in the music folder to show the most recently added? If not what do you recommend
My 500gb iMac (purchased April 2010) is about at capacity. 350gb of space is taken up by home movies (.mov) in iMovie. I bought an external hard drive and have moved about 200gb over to that drive.
After transfer, I deleted the original Events off iMovie and emptied the trash. I checked in both iMovie and in Finder and no longer see those files present on the Mac.
I thought this was going smooth and everything worked perfectly, but….when i went to check how much storage space i created on the Mac, the amount of available space barely budged (i moved 200gb of data to the new drive and i created about 30gb of space on the Mac).
Are these "deleted" files hidden somewhere and I need to go delete from somewhere else? How do I make sure I get back the storage that i need?
I'm trying to move emails from the "On My Mac" section from one mac to my new one. I've successfully transferred the folders from ~/Library/Mail and they show up, but the folders are empty when I open the mail application on my new mac the folders are empty.
I just tried to move a bunch of file from the desktop to a folder on the desktop and it copied them - normally it would move them how is this please (I was not touching the control key)
I have been using a mac for over 15 years but this one has me stumped.
When coping files I have always held down 'option' to copy the file. A small green plus symbol appears and the files then copy into the target folder, or hard drive.
I have a Mac Pro, with the latest updates of Yosemite .... but now the files are moving and NOT copying.
So when I back something up, they are no longer in the original location, only where i have copyied them to. They disappear.
I have a Macbook Pro and Lion. This problem just started happening. I have an external hard drive that I store most of my personal stuff on. When I try to move a file from the laptop to the external, I get a message saying that the operation can't be performed because of error code -50.
my work computer (Windows), but my 2012 iMac that I've had for 2 years has worked flawlessly up until recently. A few days ago it started taking forever to display files in finder. I had to keep relaunching, and it would freeze. I tried the workaround that was posted here but that didn't work either. It went away for a few days, but last night it really came back with a vengeance. The relaunch finder trick only showed the current folder, while navigating to other folders would simply show the loading icon forever.
Also, my iMac was shutdown for over an entire day yesterday, and when I turned it on the " Your computer restarted because of a problem". came up. I've never experienced this problem before, but after 3-4 tries it finally logged in to the Home screen. This is when I noticed the above (finder problems) returning from a few days ago after being absent. The finder issues continued, so I restarted the mac, and it just kept cycling over and over (reboot, try to load, auto-reboot, etc.).
Is this an issue with the HDD? I did a disk utility check the other day and it said everything was in great shape.
I really prefer Windows way of sorting a folder, first folders and then files, is there a way to do it in Snow Leopard? I have done this: [URL:...] But that doest work for me in SL.
I was sorting out my folders and files when all of a sudden it stopped letting me drag and drop. I didn't go on 'Show View Options'.I've also checked my trackpad settings and all is as should be.
Info:MacBookPro, Mac OS X (10.7.2), I haven't yet done a system update
In Snow Leopard: I open a Finder window in column view that has a long list of content, scroll down to the bottom of the column and delete a file/folder. The file/folder disappears but the rest of the window content is unchanged. IE: if my view showed me R S T U V and I delete T, my view would be R S U V. In Lion, I do exactly the same thing and the Finder jumps to the top of the column. IE: When I delete T, my window jumps to A B C D E instead of staying focused on R S U V.I've got a new Mac Mini with the 2.7 Ghz i7 upgrade... but otherwise stock. Currently running 10.7.4.
i cannot click on any of the files in the finder area for certain folders.*just upgraded from mountain lion to mavericks...i've also noticed that the icons in 'icon views' have disappeared too...here in a different folder, everything works fine....and the icons appear under 'icon views'.
I am operating an iMac with OS X 10.9.4. I have a glitch common to other Mac users in the game "War Thunder" as a result of a game update. The game maker has suggested a fix which requires going into the game folders and deleting the cache:
One potential fix for this issue is to clear (delete all files) from the following folder /Applications/ WarThunder Launcher.app/ Contents/ WarThunder. app/Contents/Resources/ game/cache"
However, when I go into finder the War Thunder launcher contents folder shows only the folders MacOS and Resources. Each contains one file. It does not show up in the Application Support folder even though the following string from the log suggests that the folders and files are all there; " 9.37 [D] skipping identical / users/davidmcleod/library/application support/steam/steamapps/common/war thunder/warthunderlauncher.app/ contents/ warthunder.app/contents/ resources/game/ content/pkg_tanks/res/pkg_tanks_tanks/ "
why I can't see the full list of folders or why they aren't actually there despite being able to play the game up until the glitch?
When ever I start up my computer there are like a 100 or so windows that open up... They are all "my computer" The same folder opens like 100 or so times.. They are all in the finder.. I can Hide them but how do I delete these so they don't show up everytime
For those of you who know Windows, you can view your folders/files in a list but still re-arrange by type/kind (i.e. I will get the folders first, then the different kinds of files).
I have a mid-2010 27" iMac, which I've just installed a new 256 Gb SSD (blazingly fast!!!) which I want to use as my primary hard drive. The 1Tb Hard drive which I'm now using will continue to be in the machine, but will serve as the document storage drive. I am using Lion and have everything backed up via Time Machine. The SSD has a clean install of Lion.
What I want to know is how can I move all of my applications over to the SSD while still keeping the documents on the 1Tb Hard Drive. Should I use my Time Machine with the Migration Assistant to do this? If I do, how do I then delete all applications off the 1Tb Hard Drive while keeping my documents? Although I have everything backed up, I'm worried that as has happened before when migrating over to a new computer, the Time Machine backup drive will not let me access previous backups once I migrate everything.
The case is this: I have a 200 GB Maxtor harddrive onto witch i want to copy all the video, zip and other files from my imac. I have allredy copied most of them by using a memory stick and taking it over to a PC and from there over to the Maxtor. But the files i have left on the mac is to large for the memory stick.
The Mac can only read, and not wright the Maxtor. But i just can't understand that i can just copy the files from the Mac to the Maxtor via a PC, but not directly?? isnt there a way to copy the files directly to the Maxtor?
I don't know much about filesystems but on my imac it says someting with RAID and aufofs. I have also understood that i can format the Maxtor to FAT-32, but some of the files are greater than 4 GB, so that wont work right?
I am planning on buying the new iMac, but i'm not sure how to move my documents, music, and photos to it. i do not own an external hard drive and i'm not willing to pay for the one-to-one class. is it possible to move the information between the panther os and the new snow leopard? what are some ways that i can move my files?
If someone removed all the photos from an external hard drive onto the admin user and the photos are not showing up on the other user on the computer, how do I move them across to the other users? Only just got an IMac but how to use it properly?
I am a new Imac owner running Mac OS 10.6.5. I recovered .dbx files from my Outlook Express folder from my old Windows XP system. Right now I can't seem to open them. Can I open-save these emails that were stored in this Outlook Express folder.
On restart the mouse moves but does not click. I thought it was the mouse and bought new one. After 24 hours same issue with the new mouse. Bought a new Apple Mouse yesterday and this morning same issue again. Usually after a wait the clicking becomes available.
My desktop have suddenly decided NOT to show files, folders and disks. I can se those files via Finder but not directly on the desktop. I have repaired permissions, verified the disk and ofcourse checked my Finder preferenses - but no go. The desktop shows what I want it to show if I switch user.
