OS X :: Finder - Finding Finder Setting To Show Folders On The Top Before Individual Files
Mar 22, 2010
Is there a setting in OSX that will set the Finder to show folders on the top before individual files - much in the same way Windows does?

When using finder and browsing through folders, it will only show me a list of recent folders. I use Lion. If I want to see all the folders or open up a less recent folder, I have to click "show all" at the top right hand corner. It gets tedious when I'm dragging and dropping files to different folders when I have to constantly click "show all" just to see the folders I want. Is there a way to override this function through the terminal? Is there a command I can use?

For some times now I have problems with finder. First I thought it was a problem accessing the network but I also have the problem with the local folders!!Â
After logging to my account, it works well for some times and then suddenly (may be after accessing machine on my network - Synology NAS) finder begin to show all folders as they are empty!!!Â
The funny thing is that if for instance I do a "file/open" within an app or do an attachment and so access a "windows like finder" it works!!
But if I use the finder ... folders are empty (shown as ...).Â
The only thing to get everything back is to restart the computer (and many times I have to hard stop the machine as the finder is not working anymore and my mac mini don't want to restart. I keep the desktop background and nothing happened!!Â
The strange thing is that it seems I don't have the problem on my MacBook Pro!! The mac mini was a clean install!Â

I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

I have only been a Mac user for about six months now but there is a problem I can't figure out (maybe it can't be done). Is there anyway when you are browsing files within Finder (or viewing a picture in Preview) that you can select a photo and have it immediately become your desktop background. I know in Windows I was always able to do this by just right clicking on the file and set background was an option. The only way I've found to set the background on my Mac is to right click on the desktop and then choose the "Change the Desktop Background" option and do it there. I can also do it within iPhoto or Picasa. But quite often I'm just browsing through my files in Finder and I run across a picture I'd like to use for my background. Surely if you can do it in Windows you can do it somehow in Mac OS.

I'm using a 15" Macbook/retina, OS X 10.9.4, ITunes 11.3.1 (2). ITunes shows the album art. But if I go to the files themselves, finder shows some with art some without. Why? I currently have one file that shows no art in icon or list view. In column and cover flow, it shows art in the info pane but not the highlighted file. I can move the file out of ITunes and the art shows up everywhere but icon view. Other files, show the art in all the right places.

I have tried multiple methods to get hidden files to be shown in Finder including the Terminal command:Â
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUEÂ
killall FinderÂ
I have also tried using Revealer and still no hidden files are shown. Â
Using Mavericks 10.9.x (latest version)Â
Can't find the com.apple.finder file anywhere in Library either.Â

In Snow Leopard: I open a Finder window in column view that has a long list of content, scroll down to the bottom of the column and delete a file/folder. The file/folder disappears but the rest of the window content is unchanged. IE: if my view showed me R S T U V and I delete T, my view would be R S U V. Â In Lion, I do exactly the same thing and the Finder jumps to the top of the column. IE: When I delete T, my window jumps to A B C D E instead of staying focused on R S U V.I've got a new Mac Mini with the 2.7 Ghz i7 upgrade... but otherwise stock. Currently running 10.7.4.

10.8 and 10.9 become a headache copying/moving files/folders between disks. After download selected images to my Imac from cards I used to move all of them to a local network backup disk (attached to a linux OS)
I don't do this anymore from a year ago: annoying warnings like "the file ... is in use" (not in use, even had been downloaded) stopped move; repeated procedure with the rest of the files included the 'used' one, over and over again and finally, after 12 times or so all files had moved. 100 files to move, stop, 80 files to move, stop, 60 files.......Â
Same problem moving files between disks attached to the same iMac.'You have to provide an admin password...." -> Continue  Password set and again 'File ... is in use' (not in use, it is just backup file)Reseting the Mac. Worse
.'You have to provide an admin password...."Â No 'Continue' option, just only 'Ok' that will do.... nothing. My solution: Terminal: sudo mv source targetÂ
I guess Finder has been tought to make life easier, isn't it?

Wondering if there's a way to make the "Copy" window that pops up show KB/sec or MB/sec transfer rate when transferring files from computer to computer or via wireless to a computer on my network.
I feel like I've seen screen shots of people copying files over a network with that information displayed.

Having trouble with my backup drive. It's a 1TB WD My Passport Ultra.Â
The drive mounts in Finder, but is extremely slow. In Disk Utility, the drive shows the correct disk space usage and number of files; but in Finder it only shows the folders/files at the root level of the drive, and each has a size of zero bytes with no items:
What is happening? How can I access the data (it's obviously still there if DU shows the files) and (possibly) fix this?

I am operating an iMac with OS X 10.9.4. I have a glitch common to other Mac users in the game "War Thunder" as a result of a game update. The game maker has suggested a fix which requires going into the game folders and deleting the cache:
One potential fix for this issue is to clear (delete all files) from the following folder /Applications/ WarThunder Launcher.app/ Contents/ WarThunder. app/Contents/Resources/ game/cache"
However, when I go into finder the War Thunder launcher contents folder shows only the folders MacOS and Resources. Each contains one file. It does not show up in the Application Support folder even though the following string from the log suggests that the folders and files are all there;Â "Â 9.37 [D]Â skipping identical / users/davidmcleod/library/application support/steam/steamapps/common/war thunder/warthunderlauncher.app/ contents/ warthunder.app/contents/ resources/game/ content/pkg_tanks/res/pkg_tanks_tanks/ "Â
why I can't see the full list of folders or why they aren't actually there despite being able to play the game up until the glitch?

For those of you who know Windows, you can view your folders/files in a list but still re-arrange by type/kind (i.e. I will get the folders first, then the different kinds of files).

The external drive (WD 80GB) is recognised and I have access to all files, however, when I search for specific files in the finder window it wont find pdf, txt, doc files. I recent fount necessary to do a complete install and restore. As I was having trouble with system performance, I chose to restore Applications from Time Machine and set the system parameters manually. In the process, I wound up with some very large (50 Gbytes) on my Desktop. I neglected to turn off time Machine backup while doing the restoration and wound up with several big(!) files in the back ups taken during the restoration. There is nothing useful on the backups taken during the restoration and they have really filled up my backup disk. Looking at the structure of the backup disk, it seems you could just delete the backups after I started to restore things. Are there other considerations? Are there hidden tables laying around that might become unsynchronized?

I have this weird and annoying problem with "show in finder".I used at one point that "defaults write -g NSFileViewer string different.plist.than.finder" to try to change the default finder, it didnt work, so I just "defaults delete -g NSFileViewer". So this is out of the way, I have no NSFileViewer in any file whatsoever. Now, for the weird stuff. If I use "show in finder" from the dock, nothing happens(neither cmd-click, of course). If I use it in safari's download list, it OPENS the file. If I use it in iTunes, on media or apps, it WORKS properly, it shows the item in the finder. If I use it in Xcode on a file in my project, it just switches to that file(so, basically, it just opens it just like Safari).
I tried deleting the dock and finder plist files in Preferences, didnt work. If I login with a different account it works properly. I really dont want to delete the whole preferences folder. I REALLY dont xD.I'm really stuck here, since all apps try and open the file(except Dock that does nothing) but iTunes works properly.if I use "Reveal in finder" in Spotify, it also opens the file(it starts to play in iTunes).if I use "Reveal in finder" in Forklift it just opens it as well.
