All files and folders on the desktop disappeared, I checked time machine and even there are no longer present, even going back months.

I lost everything on my desktop, all my folders and files. When i go to the MAC OS X and click on desktop it says : The folder "Desktop" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges. I don't know where all my things have gone. I can't save anything onto the desktop.

I'm not able to repair the drive using Disk Elements, so I want to copy some of my backups stored therein onto my Mac HD before I try reformatting the external HD. However, I get the error message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup" when I try dragging the backup folders onto my desktop. Is there any way to salvage the backups before I try reformatting? Â

My desktop have suddenly decided NOT to show files, folders and disks. I can se those files via Finder but not directly on the desktop. I have repaired permissions, verified the disk and ofcourse checked my Finder preferenses - but no go. The desktop shows what I want it to show if I switch user.

I am trying to copy some folder from my time machine back up onto my desktop but the operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access certain files. And I have changed the privilege for my back up to read and write...but it's still not letting my copy the files. How come?

whilst copying files off my usb drive the drive lead was removed that every time the machiene boots the files are recreated on the desktop I have tryed deleating them and restarting but the system recreates the files .Once the system has recreated the files ( 10 or so miniutes I am able to navagate the system .

(I also had a faulty 500GB G-Tech portable which had to be replaced.)For many reasons, my iMac's Time Machine backups have to be stored on an external hard drive rather than on our Time Capsule. Two or three times in the past year or so, the external h.d. has become corrupted or something and has had to be reformatted, losing all the previous backups and starting all over again. This time, since the external h.d. is toast, I have no backups at all.

10.8 and 10.9 become a headache copying/moving files/folders between disks. After download selected images to my Imac from cards I used to move all of them to a local network backup disk (attached to a linux OS)
I don't do this anymore from a year ago: annoying warnings like "the file ... is in use" (not in use, even had been downloaded) stopped move; repeated procedure with the rest of the files included the 'used' one, over and over again and finally, after 12 times or so all files had moved. 100 files to move, stop, 80 files to move, stop, 60 files.......Â

After I change my OS from Mavericks to Yosemite, moving files between folders is very slow.
For example, if I move one jpg file in Desktop to Pictures folder (or just any other folders like Trash), it takes about 3 seconds.Â
When I was still using Mavericks, it made that Ding sound and transferred files right away. However, now, although it makes the Ding sound right away, the file is still there for 3 seconds.Â
I tried to clean up my mac using many apps, but they never fixed this problem.
I've also tried what I saw on this one thread. OS X File Transfers Very Slow
Go->Connect to Server then type "cifs://server-address" but it says there is a problem and did nothing. (maybe different issue)Â

Some days ago I lost all of my 15 GB folders and files that stored in my Macbook Pro hard drive called DATA. I brought my Macbook pro to an experienced computer tecnicians who providing data recovery services. To his and my suprise, after checking, scanning it a few hours, he said their is no way to recover because he did not find any trails at all. The computer still seems working properly - I have no problem with any applications. There are few other folders in the DATA hard disk containing pictures, computer programs still remain. These lost folders and files contain mainly documents (word, excel, power point, pdf etc) which I accumulated in my many years working !!!!. I did not make a back up since last September partly because I think Mac is very safe.Â

I have recently ran the latest update 10.7.4 (11E53) for my iMac OSX Lion and using Safari browser 5.1.7 and since then I am experiencing intermittent problems with my Time Machine not backing up. The light on the front is on and it looks like it is working however it remains static and will not strobe as previously. The Time Machine is a WD MB Studio 1034. When I select the time machine symbol I get a message to say that the Time Machine is not set up and I cannot get to my backed up files. My last back up was done on 11th June 2012. Since then the back up drive has not automatically backed up.

We are trying to migrate our files from an old PowerPC iMac to our new iMac. The migration tool did not bring over music or photos or some of our folders. So I tried again with Time Machine. I now have 2 instances of Time Machine running on the new iMac. One is the old Mac and one is the New Mac. How do I transfer the files (music, photos, docs, etc) from one view to the other. We would like to recycle our old Mac but not until we have saved all our work and wiped the old one clean. I have tried saving and pasting but to no avail.Â

After opening Mac HD folder, made the mistake of attempting to change name next to house icon (Home? perhaps) along left spine (spine that includes 'Desktop' 'Documents' 'Applications' etc.). The computer started to run as if adjusting to the name change. From that point on, iphoto/tunes/aperture starting opening as if it was the first time asking for set-up preferences.
No photos/music can be found in the folders. I can still see my folders on the external hard drive that the tunes/photo are on, but they will not open when I open the programs. Any suggestions on fixing the links? I tried in vain to change the name back. The error message says that the previous name is already taken.
Has anyone heard of some third party software used to help simplify the process of restoring or retrieving individual files via TIME MACHINE?
I have some trouble sorting out the navigation window, when it offers choices between KEEP BOTH or RESTORE ORIGINAL. I seem to end up not finding the earlier file.Then a friend said he had heard of software that simplifies this process. I've tried Forum search but no luck yet.
If you remove a file from your mac, will time machine update it self and also remove it from the external drive? Or does it save and keep everything?
Also if it saves everything is there a way to go back and delete something, for instance some files that you don't need on your desktop.
My iMac running 10.7.4 freezes when trying to backup files using time machine. I must reboot each time to stop time machine, and use the iMac.

For no reason at all, all my folders under my active mailbox have disappeared? I've had a new hard drive installed on my iMac, (and the place that did it for me also installed 10.6 OS). Now, when I plugged in an external hard drive I had been using with time machine (and OS 10.5), and clicked 'restore' in the time machine interface, it transferred 200+gigs of data onto the new hard drive. However, I can't see any files anywhere - only see that that much space is now taken on the new hard drive. I've since read elsewhere that I should have used 'migration assistant' to do the job, but before I do this, I what to get rid of the 200+gig of data taking up room. How do I do this without a fresh install of the OS? (I don't have disks for 10.6). Or will the time machine restore (with migration assistant) not work between 10.5 & 10.6?

I found 3,708,612 copies of zero byte plist files in over 50 folders in my Time Machine backup database. One perf-pane application made all of them. Is there a fast way, really fast way to delete all of them at once. The spinning ball takes a long time to delete even one file stored 50 or more times in different or the same folder.
