IMac :: I7 Randomly Hanging - Need To Hard Restart

Apr 26, 2010

Recently, my iMac 27" i7 has begun hanging in the most bizarre fashion. It usually seems to happen when I wake the computer from sleep or screen saver, but that isn't always the case. What will happen is that when I get to the computer, Mail will show symbology that indicates it is not connected to the Internet or Safari, upon booting, will not open a webpage (it sits on a white screen rather than delivering an error). I'll go to quit one of the offending programs, and it will not quit and beach balls instead. I then right click on the dock to trigger a force quit, and the force quit does nothing and the dock beachballs. I try to restart/shut down, and nothing happens. Thus I am forced to hard restart.

Conversely, I am sometimes able to get an offending program to force quit, but the rest of the computer (anything I click locks up) beachballs leaving me to hard restart. I find when this happens, my first instinct is to click system prefs and go to networking, where when I click networking, it locks up. Then I have to hard restart. Finally, there are times when it does respond to a restart request. It will go through the restart process up to the blue screen at the end, where the little spinning doohickey will appear and stay there indefinitely, forcing me to hard restart. It didn't seem to happen before I got my iPad but happens about every other day now.

At first it seemed to happen after I had my iPad charge from my computer, but now it seems to happen regardless. One time it hung while syncing with my iPhone and required me to restore it since the phone got messed up. I've done everything I can think to do to get to the source of the problem and I can't figure it out. I've looked through logs and didn't see problems (granted, I don't know if I'm looking at correct logs or if I'm looking for the right events). I have repaired permissions, and that seemed to help but not fix the problem. I bridge my iPad to my computer through Internet connection sharing, since I have an Ethernet internet connection. I created Automator work flows to turn it on and off (and AirPort) as I never leave it on when not using it.

MacBook Air :: Randomly Forced Me To Restart?

Nov 9, 2010

This happened twice today on my late 2010 MB Air (13"/2.13/4GB). The same thing also happened on my iMac once today. This was the first time it happened with my iMac since I bought it two years ago. I was just simply browsing the Internet, doing email, and word processing.

The two most recent changes I made to both of them were installing dropbox and adding clicktoflash extension.

OS X :: Hard Drive Hanging Up

Dec 1, 2009

I replaced my 200gb 5400 hard drive in my 15" Macbook Pro, Early 2008 model, with a WD Scorpio Blue 500gb 5400 hard drive. I cloned the drive with Carbon Copy Cloner and everything seemed to go smoothly. But after I began using the Macbook in earnest, I noticed a delay in response at certain times. If I type in a word processing program, I will type five to six words, the cursor won't move, then I'll get the rainbow spinning wheel. After five to six seconds, the line will appear quickly, letter by letter, until it catches up. If I keep typing, everything is fine, but once I stop for 20 seconds or more, the same thing happens. Being more observant, I began to notice hiccups in other programs as well. I'll give a trackpad input and the spinning wheel appears, then the program catches up.

I then began to listen closely to the hard drive. After 20 seconds of activity, it sounds like it slows down, even going to sleep--although I'm not sure if that's truly what it's doing. It's only when the hard drive seems to slow/stop that this lag in input happens. If I keep giving inputs before the slowdown, everything is fine. Here is what I've done to troubleshoot. Perform a verify disk from disk utility. No issues detected.
I've unchecked "put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible." Still have same problem. I've booted from the old 200gb HD which I encased in a disk enclosure and the lag time doesn't occur when using it. Is there something else I should have done with the BIOS or something else when installing? Also, I bought the HD from Amazon. If the HD is defective, does anyone have experience to know whether WD will send me a new HD or do I have to go back through Amazon to get a new one.

OS X :: Safari Kept Hanging - IMac Won't Boot Up

Nov 21, 2010

My wife's iMac MC508 is 2 weeks old, I had to re-install it after 1 week because Safari kept hanging. It was working ok yesterday lunchtime when I used it but last night my wife switched it on and just got the white screen with logo, then a blank progress bar then the circle thing before it shut itself down. We have tried all the key combinations that we found online but no change. The only thing I have not done is put the install disk back in for fear of not being able to eject it. Has the hard drive packed up? Does this mean a trip to an Apple store?

OS X :: Programs Keep Hanging And Imac Won't Shut Down?

Feb 2, 2010

My Intel-based imac keeps hanging my programs like Word and Excel, Chrome, Firefox, etc. I force quit, then try to re-start, but get spinning wheel. I try to shut down and desktop clears, but won't actually shut down unless I push the button. It's doing it every day, almost every time I go to use any of my core programs.

I got a RAM upgrade, and an OWC Mercury Elite Pro HD to take the back ups.

Oh - I also record a moderate amount of music in Garage Band - could this be clogging up everything?

OS X :: Randomly Spins Up External Hard Drive?

Aug 4, 2009

So I have an external hard drive hooked up to my MBP via USB. I've noticed that every now and then (maybe every half hour or hour?) the drive spins up. It's actually really annoying, as the drive makes a loud sound as it spins up.

I can't figure out why it does this; the drive spins up and then goes back idle. Time machine is DISABLED, spotlight index on the drive is DISABLED as well. I use the drive solely for storing movies/music. There are NO applications installed on it. The only apps I have open are finder/preview/safari/firefox/adium/itunes. My guess is that some process is trying to access the drive for whatever reason now and then.

MacBook Pro Randomly Shuts Down Even After Hard Drive Replacement

May 26, 2012

I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro that has been shutting down randomly for quite a while now. It seems to happen most when I have more than one application running but sometimes happens with nothing running at all. It seems that the screen goes off and the sound skips but the keyboard light is still on. I thought it was because I had a bad hard drive but I replaced it and it still randomly shuts down. I ran smart utility and it all passed. I just don't understand what can be causing this? I take this computer to school all the time and it's kind of embarrassing having this shut down on me mid-presentation.

Hardware :: External Firewire 800 Hard Drives Randomly Unmounting?

Feb 21, 2009

Macbook Pro 17" Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz. Following a logic board replacement for a separate issue. I have two external Firewire 800 Hard drives (two separate brands and sizes) which have suddenly started unmounting randomly and giving the 'hardware removal error'. A few seconds after unmounting they mount again, only to unmount a minute later with the error again. It is now doing this in a loop.I have done the following things:

1. rebooted and checked all cable connections

2. I have tried this with the two disks plugged in separately and daisychained.

3. I have tried two separate Firewire 800 cables.

4. running the Disk Utility.

5.installing the system from scratch on a freshly formatted internal disk.

6. reinstalling again with an archive and install.

Everything seems to work fine with a Firewire 400 connection. The only software setting that I changed is to disable the "Put Hard Disks to Sleep when possible" option in the Energy Saver system prefs. Any connection? I have enabled this again and so far (a couple of hours) so good.Should I be looking at a hardware issue

IMac PPC :: G3 Randomly Shuts Off

When I first got it, it seemed to work perfectly in every way, but the hard disk wasn't very big so I tried to install a new (larger) one. Everything seemed to go fine, but after the upgrade, the computer would only stay powered on for about 10 minutes before shutting itself off. I assumed that it was a problem with the hard disk, so I put the old one back, but the problem persisted. It will only stay powered on for a maximum of about 20 minutes before blinking off and then it has to sit for a while before I can get another 20 miutes out of it

MacBook Pro :: Hot CPU Freezes Its Forcing Hard Restart

Jun 20, 2012

My MacBook Pro early 2011 13" freezes, requiring a hard restart when the CPU temperature stays in the 195 F (as measured by iStat nano) range for more than a few minutes.  The fans run appropriately.  I am running 16 GB of RAM, most of which is not being used during these 'hot' episodes (according to Activity Monitor).  Typically they happen when Mail is trying to connect to iCloud and can't seem to do it.  Then the spinning beach ball.  Can't force quit or restart from the Apple menu.  I'm using 10.7.4 on a dual core i7, 2.7 GHz unit.

IMac :: Started Freezing Randomly ?

Dec 8, 2010

I purchased a 24" iMac in fall of '07 and up until have had no problems at all. Let me describe the problems I'm having now and maybe someone can tell me what to do to remedy them.

A couple weeks ago it started freezing randomly. The mouse will switch to the beach ball and just spins endlessly. I can move it around but can't really do anything other than that. I have to do a hard reset to get it back to normal. Sometimes a couple programs are open, and sometimes none. It seems like it happens often when I quick switch from one user to another. It will switch, work for awhile, then freeze.

Now, no big deal, annoying, but whatever. But, the other day after doing a hard reset it revolted into a white screen with a flashing folder with a question mark. I did some research and found that I needed to repair the startup disc using the snow leopard disc. I did that and it allowed me to boot it back up normaly but didn't really solve the freeze up issue.

So, that just happened again, so I'll have to boot it up with the disc again and repair the startup disc when I get a chance. It's really beyond frustrating now.

I have repaired all permissions, updated all firmware, made sure the drive isn't full, pretty much everything short of backing up and wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS. Is that what I need ro do now? I mean, I know I need to, but is there something I can do to remedy until I can get around to doing that?
