View 10 RepliesI was wondering if anyone had successfully installed and 2nd hard drive in their iMac?I have a 2 year old 2.8 24'' iMac and the performance just isn't cutting the mustard, it's all hard drive related and I already have a decent 1TB drive in there.I was thinking of perhaps swapping the optical drive with a second hard drive for RAID0, but not too sure if there will be space and was wondering if the optical drive is a standard SATA connector, or if there is some way I could run a SATA+power cables externally?

I have my iMac connected to my TV and am using Plex to watch stuff on the TV.
What I'd like to do is turn my imac screen off without turning off the second monitor output (i.e. tv) as the imac screen is a bit bright/distracting (even on lowest brightness) when watching in the dark.
out of nowhere, my iMac acts all up everytime I connect an USB drive, being a flashdrive or WD 1 TB drive.
Description:
When I plug the device in, the screen dims, and an error message onscreen asks me to reboot the iMac in several languages. If the device is still connected during reboot, the reboot loops (WITH the error screen showing first every loop).
Tried with 3 different devices,... everytime - the screen appears.
I bought a Guardian MAXimus hard drive and it seemed to be working fine for the past few weeks. Now all of sudden when starting my Imac 27 I7 the grey screen takes a long time then it get stuck on the blue screen and stays like that. Some times after being on the blue screen it will goto the main page but it takes 3-5 min if it does. When it gets stuck, if I unplug the firewire from the back of the computer from the hard drive it boots up. Any thoughts, their tech support wants me to send the unit back with out doing any testing at home to see what the problem is, seems like a pain in the butt.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI used a new USB flash drive this morning to transfer my pictures to. It showed it was transferring them then the screen went blue and nothing responded. I shut down the computer and unplugged everything but now when I turn the computer back on it shows my home screen and I can see the mouse icon moving around but I am unable to 'click" on any of my programs and get a response.

View 21 Replies View RelatedI understand these machines burn images into screens sometimes, but they fade back to normal after a while. My issue is that its taking less and less time to burn images into my screen. It's so bad, I avoid using the left side of the screen because simply leaving anything there for a full minute burns the crap out of it. Oddly, this only effects the left third of the screen.
I remember taking it up to an apple store (not fun, considering none are near me. The address their tech support gave me actually went to a pawn shop.) but they simply told me to leave the itunes visualizer running every now and then.
Back then it was just mildly irritating. Now I cant do anything with that side of the screen! Would replacing the LCD resolve this issue?

So I've had my 24" Al iMac ever since November 2007, good and everything until the past couple days, after extended use of the imac, everything is fine, screen is great, but when entering screensaver, its still great, its like a couple minutes or so into the screen saver when the top of my iMac's screen starts to flicker! When I move the mouse to get out of the screen saver, every thing is back to normal. It happens with all screen savers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis may seem odd, but I think my iMac is melting. I started to clean my iMac with a simple cleaning cloth then i realized spots on the screen. The aren't really visible when the screen is on, but you can still kind of see them. Not only that, the quality of the images on my screen seems to be deteriorating. It is only visible under light. I have attached some photos, but i wanted to know if anyones iMac has done this before(regardless of size, but post it in case), and if apple will fix it?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a HITACHI touro desk 3TB external hard dive connected to my iMac OS X version 10.6.8 Every time i start up the system it stays on a grey screen until I unplug the usb of the external hard drive then the system boots up normally. I have tried connecting different usb cables, plug in to different usb ports, and nothing works. I have other external hard drives and they don't give me any problems. is a pain plugging and unplugging the usb cable.

View 6 Replies View RelatedHad a quick question. I'm on my third 27" stock 3.06Ghz imac that was replaced yesterday. The good news is that so far it doesn't seem to have any of the problems of my previous two 27" imac's. There is one thing though. A couple of seconds after pressing the power button to bootup there is a brief mechanical sound from the dvd drive like a quick ejecting sound even though there is no cd in the drive. My first 27" imac dvd drive made the sound but the second imac 27" Imac I had didn't. Is this sound normal? Would be curious to know why two out of the three 27" Imac's I had make that noise.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using a 20" white intel iMac and cannot manage to remove a linux boot disc from the optical drive.At first, the only way that i managed to boot to the linux disc in the first place was from the Startup Disk menu in OSX. I could not even get to the Startup Manager ('opt' at boot) or boot straight to the disc ('C').Now i'm in a position where no matter what i do, the system boots to the linux disc. I cannot even force the startup into OSX to try to eject the disc from there. I've tried holding all of these keys/combinations at startup

The intel iMac was made in late 2006 and the iMac G3 was made in 1999, 1998 or 2000.
Just now I was posting an add on Gumtree trying to sell my iMac, then I went into Dashboard to look at some notes and noticed some black indent- like text, from the Gumtree add. Is this screen burn?
I had a quick search on Google and found out that this happens more in cold environments. My room is very cold at the moment, but I haven't had anything like this happen before.
So, is this something that Apple can fix if I send the iMac in? It's still under AppleCare.

I've swapped my iMac's optical drive twice since it originally failed three months out of warranty. My first replacement was a UJ-875. My latest replacement was a UJ-225 Blu-ray reader. Here's the thing:
When attempting to insert discs, both drives failed to "grab" it and pull it into the iMac. The bezel of the iMac is so thick that I would lose the disc inside without the optical drive actually taking hold and loading the disc. With the tip of a pen I was able to push the disc in another few millimeters and it would grab and load up without issue. Both drives functioned flawlessly once I got the disc in there.
So...What is Apple doing to customize their drives so that they "grab" earlier rather than later? Is this a mechanical adjustment that can be made on the optical drive? I'm rather surprised that I've been unable to find anything like this on the web.
I have ordered a new imac with 2TB hd option. I wanted to know what people are using for a backup drive. I dont intend to partition the internal drive and have a lot of content and thats why i ordered a 2TB drive. To backup i am assuming at least 4TB external drive would be required.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is the image I get on my iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo OSX10.5.4. I have repaired permisions and removed all login items. Once I move the cursor or open up a window the screen clears behind the cursor or window etc... It freezes up at least once or twice a day...
I started up again and attached another screen, the image was normal on both screens. But alone the iMac still starts up with the pixelated screen.
First of all I'm new here so just wanted to say 'Hi', its been great to see all the discussions on these forums and they help a lot with buying tips and troubleshooting so thanks.
Problem #1 I purchased a refurb 24" 2.8GHz imac early May and have been using it since then and so far other than the "normal" gradient issue and a brownish tinge around the edges of the screen it has been good.
Lately I've been using Aperture a lot and first started to notice that in some pictures especially ones with quite a bit of highlights like clouds that there are small hatch like patches in all the pics. I know it isn't the pictures but the imac screen itself as you can see it on the desktop as well. It only seems to be centralized in the upper left hand section of the screen and they seem to be lite purple/blue in color. And like I said its only in patches in certain spots on the screen. Don't know if I'm being over anal about this or is this a problem?
Problem #2 I switched to a solid blue background to check the above problem and notice that there is screen burn in of the top and bottom header in the outline of my firefox window on the blue screen. Between switching windows often and applications very frequently and not leaving the computer at all... what the heck? Not normal for imac screens is it? Heat issue causing burn in? Hasn't been an issue with any other LCD I've ever used.
By the way the imac came in a new white box and was wrapped like new in perfect condition but I popped it open without ever starting it once to make a hard drive swap and the thing was definitely a bit dusty inside so in now way was it just used for a couple weeks before being given back to apple.
My 27inch iMac screen shuts off during screen saver and does not come back on unless restart machine?
