IMac :: 2009 27" 2x4GB + 2x2GB (12GB) Modules OK?

Aug 22, 2010

I'd just like to make sure that it'll work just fine with 2x4GB RAM modules as well as 2x2GB RAM modules for a total of 12GB? I don't need to get 16GB do I?

IMac :: RAM Mixing (2x2GB + 2x4GB)?

Oct 27, 2009

I'm going to be getting an iMac 27" when they come out and just get the stock 2x2GB sticks of RAM that come with it. I want to upgrade to 8GB... but I'm doing 2x4GB so that if I ever decided I wanted to do 16GB (I don't see why, but why not at least have half of it?).

My question is, if I do this, should I leave the 2x2GB sticks in with the 2x4GB sticks? Or should I take them out?

There seems to be some conflicting ideas about what RAM to use. I know you're supposed to do it in pairs, but I don't know how the iMac handles having 4 slots.

IMac :: Add 2 X 4gb Modules To Make It 12GB?

So my early 2010 iMac has 8gb of memory (4 x 2GB modules).I happen to have 2 spare 4gb modules that are from a MacBook pro of the same era - i.e they are DD3 1066Mhz and they will fit.So question is - if I take out two of the 2gb modules and replace them with 2 of the 4gb machines - will the machine work and will it see the full 12gb ( 2 x 2gb plus 2 x 4 gb)?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: IMac 3.06 GHz With 12GB Of RAM Running Very Slow

Feb 1, 2012

My late 2010 iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 12gb of ram is running very slow. It takes a very long for the computer to boot with the desktop taking ages to fully load. Applications are also taking an unholy amount of time to load with the spinning wheel always appearing through out use, and they often crash or don't respond and close during use. I'm talking applications like Word taking 3 minutes to load and getting the spinning wheel when font size is tried to be changed and crashing and closing if a large volume of text is attempted to be pasted into a document.The computer is also failing to shut down properly just staying on a blue screen. I recently wiped and completed a fresh install however the issues came back.

IMac :: Using 2 Or 3 Memory Modules?

Nov 18, 2009

While browsing around I've stumbled over a few references to things like "tri-channel memory" and such. From what I understand (not that good with these things) some computer architectures / CPUs are optimized for using 3 memory modules, and some for using pairs (2 or 4).

I just read some benchmark tests of the i7 with different memory configurations, and the 12Gb was is most cases on par or better than all the others when it came to performance, even better than the 16Gb one. Is the new iMac (i7) best suited to use 3 memory modules?

IMac :: Adding Single 4GB Module To Existing Two 2GB Modules?

Apr 16, 2009

I've got a refurb 21.5" iMac 3.06GHz/4GB RAM/500GB HDD arriving soon.I believe it has two 2GB modules installed in two of the four memory slots, with two other slots unused. I have a few questions before I order more RAM for my machine.

Is it advisable to have ALL the RAM modules be of identical brand and size?Can other brands of RAM be added to the two empty slots as long as they are of the same specifications? Do RAM modules need to be added in pairs or is single ok?Can the added RAM modules be of any size (1GB, 2GB, or 4GB) and still work fine with the factory installed 2GB modules?

For example, would there be any performance problem by adding a single 4GB module to the existing two 2GB modules? Or would it be better to add two 2GB modules rather than a single 4GB module?

Mac Pro :: Using 3.2GHz Or 12GB Of Ram?

Aug 9, 2010

While looking through pricing for upgrading RAM for the new Quad Mac Pro... I thought to myself... Should I spend my money upgrading RAM or should I opt in for 3.2GHz?

From the looks of it, if I were to upgrade RAM I would get OWC 12GB (3x4GB) kit, but for similar price (through my company's program) I could get 3.2GHz cpu with 3x2GB from Apple. At the moment, I'm gearing towards upgrading the processor and 6GB of RAM instead of going 12GB of RAM from OWC. My logic is that since I'm stuck with the processor and can't upgrade in future, I'd better get a solid cpu if I'm going to be using for long term purposes, the ram I can upgrade overtime in future.

My main uses are professional photography and average gaming (I'll be getting the 5870). Now my question to you guys is whether or not I'd be better off with the faster processor and little RAM or all out MORE RAM. If it helps, I use LR3 and PS CS3 as my main photo editing tools.

IMac :: Help! IMac 21.5" (Late 2009) Showing Slight Yellowish Tint!

Jul 24, 2010

Hey guys! So just a few days ago, I received my iMac, and boy do I love it. A definite upgrade and improvement from my old Acer Aspire 3680.

But despite this, I have noticed that my iMac does have a slight yellowish tint at the bottom to corners. I just arrived at my desk, and the login window (I keep a password lock) had a slight yellowish tint when I woke up my iMac from sleep . I then noticed that the bottom two corners had a slight yellow tint to them. I verified this via the MacRumors Forum post, and I was able to find it out by making my desktop background white. Again, it may not seem noticeable at first, but if you examine it closely, it becomes apparent.

I've already called my local Apple store and one of them said that don't know about this issue (?) and that they could schedule an appointment for me. I declined because I have to have me parents take me and I'm pretty sure that I can't handle the load of carrying a 20lbs. computer w/o dropping it (yikes!).

So here's the big question, should I go to my local Apple store or call the Apple hotline when it's open (currently closed at the time of this thread)? I don't want to sound like a lunatic or someone that just wants to get a better iMac for free. Again, it's slight, but considering that I do movie editing and Photoshop work

IMac :: New 20" 2009 IMac - Fan Speeds Normal Or Too Fast?

Apr 27, 2009

Specifically the hard drive fan runs at 1600rpm and the optical fan always runs at 1350 rpms.

Those fans run faster than my 2007 24" 2.4ghz iMac.

Somehow I figured with the cooler running ddr3, 9400M igpu and better cpu architecture that this new 2009 20" iMac would be dead silent because the fans would barely have to run. Or at least be less noisey.

But that's not the case.

Anyone have any fan speeds to report on new iMacs? Particularly the 20" model?

MacBook Pro :: Kingston Ddr3 1066 8gb (2x4gb) Work On 13" Unibody?

Dec 31, 2010

I purchased a brand new Macbook Pro from Best Buy a few months back, it is the 13" unibody with a 2.26 ghz dual core processor and came with 2gb of memory installed. I just bought the two sticks of memory from [URL] which were Kingston DDR3 1066 204-pins, 4gb each. My friend told me that my Macbook Pro will only support up to 6gb, but my manual says that it supports up to 8gb. He also said that people have been having trouble with their motherboards by installing too much (8gb) of memory. I've done some research and looks like I'm good to go, but just want some reassurance before I install the new memory. One last thing, he also told me that 8gb is only supported on the i7 processors?

IMac :: 2009 I7 Vs. 2010 I5

Nov 20, 2010

I have an opportunity to get a Late 2009 27" i7 (2.8 Ghz) for $1699. I've been looking at the $1999 i5 (also 2.8 Ghz). I know it has a 1Gb Video Card, compared to the 512 MB one on the 2009 i7.

My basic question is, is the i7 worth the lesser video card and cheaper price, compared to the i5 with a stronger video card?

I do a lot of work in Photoshop and iMovie, as well as Illustrator and inDesign. I also will be playing TF2 heavily, and heard that the i7 was great for video and gaming. I'm in the market for an iMac since my Late 2006 Macbook Pro is on the verge of death.

Mac Pro :: Can't The QPI Fetch From Any 3 Of The 4 Modules At Once

Jul 30, 2010

I know the newer Intel QPI processors have three main-memory channels, and I've seen much discussion and several complaints on these threads that Apple didn't expand their memory risers to squeeze in six DRAM sockets instead of four, so that the module count on each riser could be a multiple of 3. (And also that they should have done this for the 2009 Nehalems).

Here's my question: what kind of performance would I be losing and why if I got one of these new Westmere machines, discarded Apple's stock memory and replaced it with 4--rather than 3--OWC 4GB sticks? What I specifically don't understand is, can't the QPI fetch from any 3 of the 4 modules at once?

IMac :: Early 2009 IMac 24" & 30" Apple Cinema Display?

Oct 9, 2009

About 5 months ago I had my Mid 2006 iMac replaced with an Early 2009 iMac and on the whole I am very pleased with it except for one thing ... the glossy display.As our youngest has now commandeered my office I am now resigned to using the dining room which is fine except the only area for all my equipment is the wall opposite the window. The reflection during the afternoon and early evening when the sun comes through is driving me crazy. We have had blinds fitted which now help but still cast a lot of reflections and glare on the screen making reading difficult. I didn?t have this problem with the old matte iMac.An option would be to use a matte screen as a second monitor or even better a 30" Apple Cinema Display thus I can move the iMac out of the way.
