IMac :: New 20" 2009 IMac - Fan Speeds Normal Or Too Fast?

Apr 27, 2009

Specifically the hard drive fan runs at 1600rpm and the optical fan always runs at 1350 rpms.

Those fans run faster than my 2007 24" 2.4ghz iMac.

Somehow I figured with the cooler running ddr3, 9400M igpu and better cpu architecture that this new 2009 20" iMac would be dead silent because the fans would barely have to run. Or at least be less noisey.

But that's not the case.

Anyone have any fan speeds to report on new iMacs? Particularly the 20" model?

IMac :: Late-2006 20" 2.16 Fast As A Late-2009 21.5" 3.06 IMac?

Nov 15, 2009

It seems that the xBench results for the new 21.5 iMac (base model) are about the same - and maybe a tad bit lower - than my late 2006 20" 2.16 Ghz iMac (score: 140.8) My Geekbench score is lower - c.2900 - it seems, but not by as much as I thought.

Can this be? Is my machine just as fast as the new base models? I've always found that my 2.16 was a bit pokey, sometimes take 15 secs to launch Entourage or Word and 5-10 secs to launch Safari. Opening documents takes a while as well. I was thinking of upgrading, but these speeds are not encouraging.

IMac :: 27" IMac Display - Is This Normal For Led Displays?

Nov 21, 2009

This is my first led-backlit display and the first big glossy display I have used. First of all, the display is amazing because of how accurate it is and I love using it. Then to the question:The display is sort of alive, stick with me i'll try to explain it as best as I can, english is not my native language
It kinda makes this very little brightness pumping that old crt tv's and monitors did. Same kind of effect but in a lot smaller effect, but you can sorta notice it's there. I have had none of those display image disappearance/flicker problems at all, display is working very well but I'm wondering if this kind of effect is normal with LED displays and does the glossy display enhance it/let more through? I'm thinking this might add to eye strain in long use but not sure(just like crt's did).

IMac :: 27" IMac Seagate 1Tb HDD Noise Normal?

Nov 24, 2009

rite as some will already know i have took back my 27" iMac a total of 6 times and now i am on my 7th (4th one had screen issues), after actually accepting the "belly rumbling" "popping" noise and just getting on with the i5 experience, i thought i would actually contact Seagate direct on the actual matter for the rest of people on here who have doubt about there seagate hard drives. So i ring the operator i told him the whole story his first reply was sorry we dont support apple hardware! my response was "respected but the hard drive used is a seagate product"! he then replied saying sorry sir i misunderstood and quickly responded how can i help. I then repeated the problem and he asked for the HDD serial number, i was then very specific on the the noises we are all hearing and he made me repeat what i said a good 3 times so he had a very good understanding (in other words he did take this all seriously) he then said he was going to talk to the relevant person and put me on hold....10 minutes later he's back on the phone and he again asked me a final time! (ffs) to explain the noise he then quickly said in response the hard drive is supposed to make that noise. he named it the barracuda in seagates terms.

IMac :: Windows Aero Not Working In Boot Camp-2009 IMac GT120

I installed this driver with the modded INF to see if it would do anything, but Aero is still not an option. I also have issues playing some games in Fusion, while they work fine in Boot Camp.

IMac :: Help! IMac 21.5" (Late 2009) Showing Slight Yellowish Tint!

Jul 24, 2010

Hey guys! So just a few days ago, I received my iMac, and boy do I love it. A definite upgrade and improvement from my old Acer Aspire 3680.

But despite this, I have noticed that my iMac does have a slight yellowish tint at the bottom to corners. I just arrived at my desk, and the login window (I keep a password lock) had a slight yellowish tint when I woke up my iMac from sleep . I then noticed that the bottom two corners had a slight yellow tint to them. I verified this via the MacRumors Forum post, and I was able to find it out by making my desktop background white. Again, it may not seem noticeable at first, but if you examine it closely, it becomes apparent.

I've already called my local Apple store and one of them said that don't know about this issue (?) and that they could schedule an appointment for me. I declined because I have to have me parents take me and I'm pretty sure that I can't handle the load of carrying a 20lbs. computer w/o dropping it (yikes!).

So here's the big question, should I go to my local Apple store or call the Apple hotline when it's open (currently closed at the time of this thread)? I don't want to sound like a lunatic or someone that just wants to get a better iMac for free. Again, it's slight, but considering that I do movie editing and Photoshop work

OS X :: Ultra Slow DL Speeds On I5 Mac Wireless But PC Is Normal...

Feb 19, 2010

I just got my first Mac last week and I love it to death except for one thing. I can only get D/L speeds of about .7 - 1mbps wirelessly on my Linksys N router but my PC gets the full "advertised speed" (about 5.8) on wireless. This is very annoying and I have no idea what it could be. I don't really know what it does but I did some research and some people in other places recommended clearing the cache and I did. Nothing works, no reboots, no unpluggs, nothing.

IMac :: Making Fast IMac 2.66 HD?

Feb 14, 2010

I have a 20 inch 2.66 aluminum iMac that came with a 320GB HDD. Lately the HD seems to grind for a long time when I launch any programs. The whole computer seems to just be waiting on the HD to catch up. I have 4GB of ram and it never uses all of it but I can hear the drive reading/writing while I wait for apps to load. Most notably safari, cs4, etc. but it does happen on many other programs. I thought that the issue was that it had been going on a year without a reformat, I waited until snow leopard came out and completely wiped the drive and installed 10.6 on it. However the slowness came back and I have since formatted again only to have the same problems. Has anyone else experienced these slow HD's? I have run Drive Genius on it and there is no bad blocks/SMART is verified.

IMac :: How To Reduce Minimum Fan Speeds

Jul 26, 2009

I have a new mid-2009 iMac 24 inch 2.66GHz. I work in a quiet environment and most of the time the computer is idling along. iStat returns the following fan speeds:
CPU 1200
HDD 1600
ODD 800

Even when I drive the iMac a bit harder - 100% CPU for an hour and a half - the temps only rise as follows:
CPU 60 C
Northbridge 68 C
Power Supply 71 C
and the fan speeds do not increase.

I value silence, and it seems to be unnecessary for the fans to running at this speed when they are not needed most of the time - when the computer is not under any load. With the iMac everything is right in front of your face. I heard about iMac Fan Control and installed it, but there is no possibility to set lower-than-standard fan speeds, except for the HD which can be set to 1200 instead of 1600. However, the ODD minimum speed increases to 1000 from 800.

IMac :: What Default Apple Fan Speeds Are?

May 7, 2010

I was having problems with overheating last night in Windows 7 in that a few apps started freezing and I noticed that the top of my iMac was scorchingly hot even when I wasn't doing anything. I downloaded MacFan and used it to up the minimum fan speeds, and it worked as I wanted it to. Upon rebooting into Mac OS X, however, I think the fan speed increase carried over and was excessive, because I can hear my fans going even when I'm not doing anything and the top of my case is barely even warm (whereas before it was somewhere between very hot and painful).

I opened up smcFanControl and it's reporting ODD/HDD/CPU speeds of 2000/2500/1500, but it also has those numbers as the listed minimums on the sliders, so I can't decrease them beyond that. I'm pretty sure I can get around that by hacking the preferences file, but that requires that I actually know what the default Apple fan speeds are. Can someone with an i7 iMac who hasn't messed with their fan speeds open up smcFanControl and tell me what the minimum speeds are?

IMac :: Temperature And Fan Speeds High - Need Newer Upgrades?

Feb 8, 2010

I just recently bought an imac computer and my two friends who know a lot about apple computers thought that the fans and temperature might be a little high. The cpu fan at idle runs at just under 1200 rpm's, the harddrive fan runs at 1100 rpm's and the optical drive fan runs at 1000 rpm's. The temperature itself 40-44C. The other imac that they know of is a year old, so we weren't sure if there were newer upgrades that might be making the difference between our speeds and temperature compared to that one.

IMac :: RPM Speeds Of Fans Increase And Boot Time Doubled

Jun 23, 2009

My iMac seems to be a lot more noisier (a low humming noise, maybe the fans), than it was when I purchased it in a couple of months ago. When I first got it, it was the quietness and boot time which I was impressed with more than anything. Now it's noisier and boot times have doubled. I have noticed that the fans for for HD and CPU constantly spin at 1200rpm or more, with no applications open and as soon as I switch on my iMac.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Isn't IMac Transferring Files Over Network At Wireless-n Speeds

Jun 2, 2012

First of all here's my setup: 30d/4u Charter internet coming in through my Linksys modem, from there to port 1 of my 2006 Intel Xserve running NAT and DHCP, out from port 2 of the Xserve into my AirPort Extreme running in Bridge Mode, and then out to my other devices.

My AirPort setup is as follows: Internet tab-DHCP, address set by Xserve; Wireless tab-Create a wireless network, WPA/WPA 2 Personal; Wireless Options...-5 GHz network name is not checked, Radio mode is set to 802.11a/n-802.11b/g/n (Automatic), both 2.4 and 5 GHz channels are set to Automatic; Network tab-Off (Bridge Mode).

I am transferring 100+ GB of data across the network to my Xserve, but it is only Xferring at 5.5 MB/s, or around 44 Mbps, which isn't even at wireless-g speeds. My iMac is the Mid 2010 27" BTO w/ 2.93 i7 and 8 GB of RAM. It is also wireless-n compatible. The Xserve is wired and they have had gigabit NICs since the G5s.

Things I've tried: In Wireless Options... I tried turning Radio Mode to 802.11a/n-802.11b/g and leaving 5 GHz network name unchecked, but the speeds were down in the 2 MB/s range. Again in Wireless Options... I checked the box for 5 GHz network name, and left Radio Mode in Auto, joined the 5 GHz network on my iMac, tried again, but again only 2 MB/s or less. In Wireless Options... again, I checked the 5 GHz network name box, and set Radio Mode to a/n-b/g, but ocne again, it ran at 2 MB/s or less. The AirPort Extreme is model A1354, which is obviously 802.11n compatible, and the iMac is also 802.11n compatible.

IMac :: Early 2009 IMac 24" & 30" Apple Cinema Display?

Oct 9, 2009

About 5 months ago I had my Mid 2006 iMac replaced with an Early 2009 iMac and on the whole I am very pleased with it except for one thing ... the glossy display. As our youngest has now commandeered my office I am now resigned to using the dining room which is fine except the only area for all my equipment is the wall opposite the window. The reflection during the afternoon and early evening when the sun comes through is driving me crazy. We have had blinds fitted which now help but still cast a lot of reflections and glare on the screen making reading difficult. I didn?t have this problem with the old matte iMac.An option would be to use a matte screen as a second monitor or even better a 30" Apple Cinema Display thus I can move the iMac out of the way.

Mac Pro :: 2009 2.66 Quad - Is This Temp Normal?

Mar 17, 2009

I wanted to see how hot my temps would get at max so I ran handbrake for 30 minutes and Cinebench simultaneously over and over. This room does not have A/C. As soon as Cinebench started running the multi core render for a while the machine was at max temp.

CPU A 157 Fahrenheit Northbridge 126 Fahrenheit

Remember, I set the temps to display in Fahrenheit and not Celsius. So I would assume CPU A was maxed out at 70 Celsius.

Is this okay/normal when pushing the machine to a max temp? And what in the world is the Northbridge temp? It just looked important so I listed it. lol

Also how can you tell the temp of the GPU?

Desktops :: CRT IMac Battery - Failing Fast

Jul 13, 2010

the PRAM battery clearly is failing fast. After two assurances from a large local computer seller/repairer (Best Buy) that they could indeed go to her apartment, and after acquiring the correct battery for her, I have now found out that they won't go to her apartment because the computer is more than six years old. Dead end there! Does anyone know of a place in New York City (or an individual) that would both visit her apartment and be sufficiently conversant with the innards of such an old Mac that there would be a good chance that the battery will be replaced without harming the computer? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it besides the failing PRAM battery, but Barbara is willing to pay handsomely to have her baby fixed, even if it means having the person go over it with a fine-tooth comb and charging accordingly. The computer is extremely heavy, or I'd take it in to the Best Buy store myself, and though we could get it into a taxi (with help from a doorman), there is the problem of getting it into the store and downstairs, where the repair area is. I'm strong but probably, not strong enough to do it, and we don't know anyone who could help. Any thoughts? There are multitudes of repair places and individual repairers in NYC, and many who visit people's apartments, but we clearly need someone who knows very old iMacs intimately and is not afraid to approach the problem.

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Really Slow/how To Make Fast?

Just as i started typing in the title for this tread, it gave me a beachball. This computer is not that old so it should still be running smoothly.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

btw: I have 1GB of RAM, but it still operate really slow when I only have a few application open.

Also, no matter what it open, Now there's two! You know how the root application reports crashes? Well, apparently it's reporting millions. It's using 70%-100% of my CPU too! A bunch of other root programs are taking 20%-30%, so that totals up to over 250% of my CPU!

Windows On Mac :: XP On IMac - Making Fast Performance

Apr 19, 2010

iMac, late 2006 Generation

XP info:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service pack 3

Computer:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
T7400 @ 2.16GHz
2.16GHz, 2.98 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

Leopard info:
Version 10.5.8, same hardware.

I've installed XP via Boot Camp. The internal drive in the mac is 230gb (total), and I allocated 60gb to XP. I formatted the partition to NTFS (not quick), and completed the rest of the setup. I then inserted the Leopard DVD and installed the boot camp drivers. Then I downloaded all available updates for XP, and the only other thing I've installed is Mozilla Firefox. I've also made changes to the system using an optimization guide (link below), and the performance seems to be the same before and after.

[URL] - I've only done as far as number 20.

The performance is very sluggish. It shows most while scrolling. It's not smooth and jitters a lot. On previous installations of XP on this computer, I've run audio software (Pro Tools/Cubase) and the performance is terrible. It can't handle even the simplest of tasks.

On the Mac OSX side of the machine, however, performance is fine. Everything runs smoothly.

As far as I know, the specs of the computer are pretty good. I can't understand why performance wouldn't be up to scratch

So, I'm just wondering if anybody has any ideas on what's going on? Is this normal, or am I missing something? It seems like Windows isn't using the full power of the hardware.
