I just received the 2GB ram upgrade I ordered for my home iMac. I already have the factory 2GB. I thought it would have 1 2GB stick alredy, and that I could add another 2GB stick, but a friend just told me it probably has 2 1GB sticks in it...anyone know?

i am just about to buy a 15-inch: 2.8GHz macbook pro, i am wanting to be able to play games like fallout 3, and i was wondering if the 15-inch: 2.8GHz will be comparable to an xbox 360 at all?, as int eh refresh rate and graphics? if it will be and if it runs smoother this will seal me into buying one. also will i be able to play the fallout game using an xbox 360 controller with a wireless pc dongle on a macbook pro? also will playing games such as fallout drain the battery extremly quick on a macbook pro?
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe new 27-inch iMac uses up to 365W vs 280W for the old 24-inch! (going by Apple's published max. power consumption numbers. I doubt they would lie because it isn't exactly favourable for them to put in falsely high numbers in an environmental report).
That means there's some extra beef behind the extra components. Perhaps the ATI 4670 is a bit overclocked and the 4850 runs a bit faster than the old iMacs? Admittedly that 2.8 GHz i7 is going to suck a fair bit of power - the recent 2.8 GHz i7 860 model runs at a 95W TDP, however, the quad core iMac isn't available until November. So it won't be using the i7 860, and my guess it is using another custom processor, something a bit more power efficient, somewhere in between the 55W TDP of the old iMacs and the 95W TDP of the i7 860.
The difference between the power consumption of the two computers is 85W. The old iMac had a 24-watt digital amplifier, this new one has two 17-watt amplifiers. That brings the delta down to 75W. Say the iMac's i7 processor has an 80W TDP. That now brings the delta down to 50W. The new display likely wouldn't increase power consumption because of the LED backlight.
I'm not sure if I'm missing much (OK, two extra RAM chips may use another few watts), but there is still a fairly massive 50W unaccounted for.

I just read some benchmark tests of the i7 with different memory configurations, and the 12Gb was is most cases on par or better than all the others when it came to performance, even better than the 16Gb one. Is the new iMac (i7) best suited to use 3 memory modules?
Hello everyone, I'm currently looking to buy a 27 inch imac and can't decide whether to get a base i3 27 inch or a refurbished i5 quad core 27 inch. With the i3 I can get the student discount and qualify for the ipod, but the i5 is 23% off right now. Which should I get? Also is there a benefit of getting a 5 series graphics card over a 4 series graphics card?

View 12 Replies View RelatedI've got a refurb 21.5" iMac 3.06GHz/4GB RAM/500GB HDD arriving soon.I believe it has two 2GB modules installed in two of the four memory slots, with two other slots unused. I have a few questions before I order more RAM for my machine.
Is it advisable to have ALL the RAM modules be of identical brand and size?Can other brands of RAM be added to the two empty slots as long as they are of the same specifications? Do RAM modules need to be added in pairs or is single ok?Can the added RAM modules be of any size (1GB, 2GB, or 4GB) and still work fine with the factory installed 2GB modules?
For example, would there be any performance problem by adding a single 4GB module to the existing two 2GB modules? Or would it be better to add two 2GB modules rather than a single 4GB module?

I love it so much. I'm really into video editing and HD video, but the problem is that my MBP is running out of harddrive space, and I'm longing for a bigger display and a better processor. Just picked up a 24" iMac on clearance and the Internet seems to hang up and just be a bit slower in general compared to my 4yr old MBP. I can't really get a cable to it so I'm using a Belkin N1 router. Is there anything I can do to see if it's the router or possibly the iMac?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got an iMac 2.8GHz 24", a set of Grado RS 1s, a HeadRoom Ultra Micro amp w/ an Astrodyne power supply ... the connection is to the headphone jack in the iMac; will there be a difference in sound if I add the HeadRoom Ultra Micro DAC? I can't imagine better sound than my current set up, but I keep hearing that a DAC is the way to go.

I've got an old iMac 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 that I love to use for surfing the web etc.
I'm finding that I can't view anything that requires Flash as my system (10.3.9) won't allow me to download the latest Flash or Firefox.
I tried asking in the local Apple store how I could upgrade my OS but the guy said they don't sell the OS upgrade anymore.
Is there anything I can do to upgrade my OS so that I can download newer versions of software like Flash or Firefox?

My iMac won't get past grey screen, I've tried holding down c. I've tried holding cmd+s. I've reset my PRAM etc, I've put back in RAM it came with, and when I turn it on I just get grey screen, apple logo and the spinning thing! Updated it to new snow leopard OSX 10.6.6 and it has a DVD in the drive and I can't even get that out! What can I do?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have put a brand new hard drive in the machine. I took off the plastic bezel to the power cord, to make sure it's plugging in all the way. I turned the computer on while watching the LED's on the logic board. All 3 stayed on, and the 4th never came on.
I have unplugged it, left it unplugged for a few minutes, plugged the cord back in while holding the power, then turned it on (forgot what that was supposed to accomplish). No change.
I have reset the PVRAM (or whatever) 3 times in a row by holding command-option-p-r until I heard 3 chimes after the initial boot. No change.
I can get into open firmware, but have no idea what I could even try in there (other than ejecting the DVD).
I hold down "C" while booting, it chimes, it goes to a blank grey background, then proceeds on to the white screen with the apple. It sits there for a few seconds, then starts spinning the circle for a while, then shuts down. I hear the optical drive spin up, but it does nothing.
I am trying to decide which of these two 27 inch imacs I should buy:
27 inch 3.06 core 2 duo model
27 inch 3.2 I3 model
Is the 27 inch 3.2 ghz I3 model a better value in terms of increased computer and graphics performance and is it better to get the 2nd generation model because of prior issues (i.e. yellow tinge)?

Every few weeks my iMac will suddenly freeze, the screen going black or white or pink etc. The only way I can get the computer back is to hold down the power button to force a shutdown. Then after a restart everything is OK for a few more weeks. Usually it occurs when I am on the internet. I click on something and suddenly the computer is frozen. I am on OS X 10.6.8 and usually use Safari. Ironically when I opened this forum 5 minutes ago there was a similar sounding problem at the top of the list!

I noticed that when I copy/paste images in photoshop cs4 and drag the images, the pasted image usually gets blocky and moves in slow motion when i drag it. My friend has a Mac with a 512mb video card and 4gb of ram and has no such issue. I'm wondering if the difference in VRAm is what is causing my sluggishness in Cs4
My question is: should I have opted for the 512 model graphics card? I have another week or so to return my iMac. Or is this a RAm issue, and should I upgrade to 8gb of ram? I guess I'm wondering how much of a difference video memory makes on system performance. Thanks!!
