IBook :: Stop G3 Doing Hardware Test Every Time It Starts Up?
Jun 5, 2014
Every time I startup my iBook G3 it makes the bong then it shows the apple the logo but then a black screen with writing appears and does, what I think is, a hardware test. It is very annoying for me and I don't know how to stop it doing this everything it boots up. I have tried restoring the iBook to factory settings and that did nothing.

I've got a 2007 Macbook Pro. It's on its second graphics card (8600M GT), the first one failed on me a year ago. OS X 10.5.7, all firmware updates installed.
I think I have a new graphics card issue, but I can't prove it. In Front Row, after 10-20 minutes, often parts of the screen will start going black. Then it freezes. Sound works fine. It doesn't look like the same kind of wild distortion that I got when my GPU failed the first time, though, it just looks like things have been rendered incorrectly.
When Front Row finally quits, I've had black and white bars across my menu bar a couple of times. Once the computer then totally locked up and I had to reboot.
In Windows XP in boot camp, things are worse. I only use boot camp for games, since they use a lot of graphical power, it made sense that the problems happen there more often. After 15-20 minutes, the screen will start stuttering, then the keyboard/mouse will stop responding. The sound will hiccup a few times too. That lasts about 10 seconds, then everything returns to normal for a while (as little as 10 seconds, or as long as 5 minutes.)
The Apple Hardware Test (short and extended) shows no trouble. Techtool Pro shows no trouble. I ran the very thorough memtest86+, and it showed no memory trouble.
Can anybody give me any tips on definitively diagnosing this problem? Is there any kind of really intensive hardware test I can get (a live CD maybe)?
Second question, has anybody heard of Apple replacing a laptop that has had many faults with a brand new unit?

What's the best way I can test RAM in an old iBook G3? It had a bad module so I replaced it. All seems okay now, but I want to test it to be sure it's all good. Normally I'd just pop in Memtest86+, but Memtest86 doesn't support PPC (obviously).
I don't have any disks for it or anything, so no Apple Hardware Test disk.

I have a Mac mini set up and connected wirelessly to a Orange wireless router and using a online speedtest about 20 times over 3 days get average connection showing of just under 1Mbps.
When i try the same test on my iBook i get around 4Mbps, on my dell mini I also get 4mbps.
So I assumed it was a problem with the wireless reception where the mini is situated, so I connected it via ethernet cable and got... the same result, under 1Mbps.
any suggestions on this as I am cluelsess and dont even know where to start?
the reason all this came to light is I bought a NAS and can stream vidseo fine to everything but the Mini!
Oh also is there a guide anywhere for the best/proper way to set up NAS sharing with macs? just bought a buffalo linkstation and manual isnt that detailed for the mac, and there doesnt seem to be much online.

I have downloaded what I assume is the correct AHT image (iBook Version 1.2.4 [URL]) from Apple Support. After burning it to a CD, using disk Utility, it fails to boot on my late 2004 14" G4 1.33ghz IBook M9627B/A.
Am I doing something wrong or is there another version of AHT that is available as a download that will work?

I have a MAC OS X 10.4.11 IBook G4 1.1. It's acting up on me. Crashes often and freezes as well. The only CD I can find is the Mac OS X Tiger Install DVD. Is this the Hardware test cd as well?
If yes, how do I get the hardware test started. I tried the "restart while holding "C"" and "restart while holding the "option key""... Doesn't work... Don't see a hardware test option. If no, Can I download the application

After 3 days of contact with Apple support they have determined that even though they sold units with defective logic boards and the serial number of our unit falls in the range of units with the problem, Apple is not going to honor the replacement or prorate repair since the program expired in August...I thought only software houses used customers to beta test their products

My son's 17" imac PPC G5 was not booting up. After a trying a couple of things I got it to boot using Disk Warrior and reparing the file directory. At that time I also ran DW's hardware test which said the drive was fine. My son hard restarted it shortly after I fixed it and it wouldn't start up again. Just a gray screen, no apple logo. When I tried to use DW again it told me there were problems with the hard drive and it couldn't fix the problem. I tried to fix the hard drive in target disk mode using Disk Utiltiy and Drive Genius. No luck. So I pulled a working drive out of my Mac Pro and reformatted it and swapped the internal drive of the iMac with it. There were no DIP switches to set. Started up the imac with a Leopard retail disk thinking I would just install a fresh system onto the replaced internal drive of the iMac. Disk Utility on the leopard disk didn't see the hard drive. Now I'm beginning to think it's a logic board problem but I can't find the original disks to do a Hardware test with. Is there some other way to test a logic board? Or some other idea that I'm not thinking of that could be wrong with the machine?

When ever I turn on my Mac it starts up in Utilities and gives me the 4 options to restore from Time Machine, reinstall OS X, contact Apple, or to open Disk Utility. Unfortunately, I had never made any Time Machine backups.
When I try to reinstall the OS it tells me that my hard drive is locked.
Disk Utility tells me that it can't repair Macintosh HD and to back up as many of my files as possible, reformat the disk, and to restore the backed up files.
Since I can't create a Time Machine back up, what can I do to save my files and such if I choose to reformat? Is there possibly a way to unlock my hard drive to reinstall the OS? I guess I'm asking what is the best corse of action in this scenario?

My external disk which I use for Time Machine was replaced and the time machine files on it put onto the replacement disk. However although my computer(Imac intel using Leopard 10.5.6.) recognizes the disk as the back up disk for Time Machine (including the oldest backup dates and latest backup dates in the time machine preferences), it attempts to perform a complete back up of my HD instead of only a small incremental back up of the new files.

My iBook charger has stopped working, the iBook is well out of warranty by now, and i cant find any replacement chargers for it. Instead of just buying another one, will apple replace my current one? It was sparking on the cable that plugs into the computer and it looks like its been burnt, which is probobly why it doesn't work anymore, is this a defect with apples chargers and will they replace it even though my iBook is out of warranty?

if you recall a thread I started trying to get help on why the Mac Pro was crashing... I finally narrowed it down. After speaking to about 4 different people at apple.... they had me run the Apple Hardware Test off the boot CD.I took out EVERYTHING except the 2nd DVD burner (Apple Branded Superdrive from my old 2.5 Dual G5)... and ran the test. The Hardware Test ACTUALLY FROZE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RAM TEST.I thought I had bad aftermarket ram... as it wasn't playing nice with the Apple ram when I added them together.Looks like I had fine aftermarket ram... the Apple ram was bad.I REPLACED the Apple Ram with the Aftermarket Ram... and the Hardware Test completed fine. So, now I'm going to be calling them again in the morning and letting them know what happened. I wonder if they'll just let me RMA the bad ram, or if I'm going to have to lug this dang thing down to an apple store.I WONT BE HAPPY IF I HAVE TO DO THAT.Oh, and no more lockups since switching out the ram... and all the other quirks (not able to burn CDs in Windows, sloooow Internet page draws, etc...) are all but gone now.

I'm wondering if someone with the latest Time Capsule (announced last week) can post the results of copying a large file (such as your iPhoto library or equivalent - ideally over 500MB) from the HD on your Mac to the HD on the TC over GigE.
Please report the time in seconds for the copy to complete and the size of the file. I'd like to understand if they changed the QoS on transfers to the TC HD.

I have a 17" unibody MBP (early 2009, specs below). It was running hotter than usual the other day, so I F2 booted into AHT to run a diagnostic. The status box within AHT showed 1 second into the 1st pass, and never got beyond that. Several seconds after that status message was displayed, the cursor froze. The time counter never advanced after that, and although I waited a long time, nothing happened. The test froze.
I've tried it several times more. It once worked, but every other time has frozen. Checking the "extended test" box, or trying to run in loop mode has made no difference - still freezes at "1 second".
I've had this machine for 3 years, OS's Leopard through Lion, and this has never happened before. I last ran a test, successfully, in January. I've not changed any components or suffered any damage since then. Memtest (ver 4.22) says my RAM is fine. (I ran this because the first portion of the AHT is the RAM component.) Aside from the aforementioned overheating episode, which disappeared, my machine's been fine.

I just bought an external hard drive [LaCcie Grand 1TB]...and before using it says, the manual says create a back up in case you don't want you're information erased - cause, apparently, that what happens when you first apply a "partition" to you EHD. So, I decide to back up my data in my new EHD...with Time Machine, which I have never used before since I have had this MacBook Pro (2 years). Seems pretty straight forward. I turn on TM, start backing up. Everything seems to be going fine. I had ~75 GB on my main hard drive, and that seemed to have been backing up, until started reaching 75.1 GB...then 100.1 GB! So I stop it and I notice it has created a "inprogress" document in the EHD.
So I continue backing up, and still...it won't stop. It is like space(volume) keeps on expanding. So will TM just back up my whole hard drive? 250 GB? This how it looks like the third time I started the process [URL]. The "white" part just stays the same, while "17.76 GB of 17.76 GB" becomes "17.90 GB of 17.90 GB", "19.20 GB of 19.20 GB", "21.12 GB of 21.12 GB"...and so on. Is this normal? Should I keep it running till it stops? Am I doing the right thing by choosing my EHD as my back up disk? Even before "partitioning it"? Should I be safe if I transfer data manually to the EHD? before partitioning (is it optional)? Can I delete the "inprogress" document? I'm using a Mac OS X 10.5.8

Just today I've noticed that the time machine icon in my menu bar won't stop spinning. Finally, I clicked it and it says that it has been "preparing backup" all day long. I stopped the backup just to see if it was a one-time glitch. One hour later, the same thing happened. I gave it thirty minutes and the entire time it said it was "preparing backup"
How can I fix this? I already tried turning TM on and off, that didn't do the trick.

I have this annoying problem with my iMac in the same room as my Apple TV and whenever I use my Apple TV Remote, it also turns on a movie on my iMac and that bugs me. Sure I could turn down the sound so I don't hear it but that does not solve the problem.
Is there a way to pair these remotes, I have one for my iMac and 1 for my ATV, and whenever I play something on my ATV it also starts a movie on my apple, usually a different movie. Can they be paired separately somehow so they are controlling only the unit they are suppose to be with?

I am using 10.6.8 but I created a Lion partition on the same disk. I am trying out Lion and I do not want Time Machine to back it up. I was able to exclude the Lion volume until I encrypted the Lion partition using Filevault 2. Now when I'm using Snow Leopard, there doesn't seem to be a way of preventing Time Machine from backing up the Lion partition.

I have 3 email accounts that I have added to my Mac Mail. It seems to have chosen my school email account as the default email so every time I send an email, it says it's coming from this school account. I have a primary gmail account that I would like to use as a default. Is there a way to stop this automatic selection every time I compose a message? Even if I select the account I want to use when I compose a new email message, it still sends it out showing the wrong account as the sender.
