I'm wondering if someone with the latest Time Capsule (announced last week) can post the results of copying a large file (such as your iPhoto library or equivalent - ideally over 500MB) from the HD on your Mac to the HD on the TC over GigE.
Please report the time in seconds for the copy to complete and the size of the file. I'd like to understand if they changed the QoS on transfers to the TC HD.
i have a 1.5 Mbps AT&T DSL connection, and multiple speed tests show a download speed of 1.2 Mbps (and 200 Kbps upload). when i download files, such as software updates from Apple, various podcasts, and even Silverlight from Microshaft, the speed is always between 140 - 160 Kbps. i contacted AT&T, and the rep said it was because of buffering by the servers i was receiving the files from. is this a reasonable explanation? is this an accurate use of the term "buffering"?

After getting help to set it up through Apple, I started noticing that my internet connection would drop EVERY night between 8:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. - signal drops for anywhere from 5 min to 20 min several times. It appears to be okay during the day. I am an ATT user with their modem, a speed stream 5100. The power, ethernet, and dsl light say lit with the internet light flashing. After having this problem for about a month, I called ATT who sent out a technician. He said all was fine. It happened again the same evening. This was in mid-December. I purchase a time capsule as I decided the express may be faulty and didn't have time to return to an apple store. I am having the same problems. Internet fine during the day and drops in the evening. Could my modem be the problem? I have called ATT again as well as Apple and they all think it is hooked up correctly. If modem is bad, what should I buy to work with the time capsule?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a new Time Capsule which I have connected to my existing Modem/Router as an ethernet device, so it is not running as the router itself. However I have set it up to run its own wireless network.
I am trying to do the first backup of my mac mini, with attached external hard drive which has my iTunes library. The size of the backup is about 380gb. I connected the mac mini to the Time Capsule wireless network, and started the backup, but is running quite slowly, at about 5gb per hour. So the full backup will take about 3 or 4 days at this rate. The initial backup of my MacBook Pro (about 18gb) took 2 or 3 hours, so a similar sort of speed. I've disabled Time Machine on the Macbook pro for the time being, until I get the mac mini sorted out.
I understand a backup over ethernet would be quicker, but the time capsule is not the network router, so if I just connect an ethernet cable from the mac mini to the time capsule, is that going to work?
Is my only option to use the Time Capsule as router? Or is there anything else I can try?
I did some experimenting this evening to assess data transfer rates to various storage items in my home network which uses a new Time Capsule as the router/hub.
Connected to the Time Capsule are the following:
- Mac Pro (GigE)
- Vista Machine (GigE)
- MBA (Wifi)
- Raptor Drive (USB 2)
- Time Capsule Drive (Internal)
Transferring a 650MB file between devices yielded the following results:
MP > Vista (GigE) = 288 Mbps
MP > MBA (5GHz) = 52 Mbps
MP > MBA (2.4GHz) = 43 Mbps
MP > Raptor (TC USB) = 38 Mbps
MP > TC Drive (Internal) = 38 Mbps
MBA (5GHz) > TC Drive (Internal) = 22 Mbps
It seems that transferring files to a USB drive or the internal drive on the Time Capsule is painfully slow. It took 2:20 to transfer the 650MB file to the Time Capsule over GigE vs. 0:20 seconds to another machine. What's worse, is that the data transfer speeds to the TC are a function of link speed, the slower your connection, the slower your transfer rates. It's not simply limited by some bottle-neck in the TC. It took 3:45 to transfer the same file to the TC from the MacBook Air over the 5GHz WiFi connection. When I complained about this the other day at the Apple store, the "Genius" said that it's due to QOS built into the router to ensure it doesn't kill my web browsing.
Im using time capsule and MBP trying to watch hd videos on youtube . Its running to slow and wont keep up with the videos. What can I do to make it faster. Or is it my macbook?

I've given the password to a couple of my friends, but their favorite things to do while on my network are Skype, Hulu, and ESPN streaming--leaving me with an unreliable, slow wireless connection.To help with this problem, I want to buy a Time Capsule--I'm really looking forward to using its wireless backup and printer sharing features. My first question is, though, will a Time Capsule be able to handle multiple bandwidth-hogging wireless connections faster and more reliably than my cheapo Belkin router, or will it also choke? (I know for a fact that the problem isn't my university's network, because I get blazing fast download and upload speeds via Ethernet.)

While it's transferring, i hear some beep, but it's not cyclic, it's like 2 beep then nothing & 1 minute after, 3 beep, then 2 beep and nothing for 2 minutes or 2 beep & 4 beep & 2 beep. So here is my question : I bought this Time Capsule to have more HDD backup & save documents on it. is that a sign of defectual disk? Second question : how can i backup the Time Capsule ? If i go 500Go on it... ? I just don't want to change it, if i get the same bip with all TC when i transfer files on it.

Why does OS-X do that?!
Also, if I have 1 gig of memory left (out of 180 or so) why does it disappear to 0 if I open photoshop? I'm used to a PC running virtual memory and CPU but why does the Mac actually take away my available memory?I'm at my wits end here, it's been driving me up the wall for weeks!
I've just hooked up my 2 Tb time capsule, which is supposed to be the destination for time machine and also have a share folder to share music on the network. Originally I wanted to partition the drive, but since that appears to be such a headache I'll probably make do with one partition.
if time machine will try to overwrite the share folder when it runs out of disc space?
For almost the last year I have been using an Airport Extreme on 2.4b/g and and Airport express in my room to extend my wireless network. I also have a usb hdd configured to back up my macbook using time machine. Well I have a new roommate moving in and he has his own extreme and two expresses.
I have some questions on what would be the best way to consolidate our networking devices. I considered us selling our extremes and getting the new time capsule so both of our macs can use 5ghz while my girlfriends dell uses the 2.4.
Is there a noticeable speed difference between time capsule backup vs hard drive to extreme connected via usb?
I have 1.9TB on one drive, 645GB on another; I want to copy all that data onto a separate 6TB drive....
What's the fastest way to do this? I have already begun w/ 2 cp -pR commands, running in different Terminal windows, but seem to be getting lower disk activity numbers in Activity Monitor than I was with a brief test of a Finder copy... is that possible?
Any suggestions? Also looking for a (relatively) efficient way to verify the copied data after the fact.
I am having another problem transferring some larger folders from my old MacBook to my new MacBook. I am trying to move some very large folders and individual files from my old Mac to my new Mac, both running the latest Lion. I have tried this with both USB Flash drives and with external hard drives. Whenever I drag and drop from Finder to either the flash drive or the hard drive, the copying begins, but always gets stuck with the pinwheel at almost exactly 4.17GB. At first I thought that the formatting of the flash drive might be the culprit, but it also happens on the external hard drive that is formatted for Apple Extended.
A very "time and effort" intensive workaround is possible if I just copy fewer than 4 GB at a time, which is what I have been resorting to. But this won't allow me to transfer my Windows 7 Parallel virtual machine, since that one file is over 90GB. As additional information, it appears that Time Machine isn't bothered by this limitation, since I can backup and restore these huge files from a backup. Unfortunately, Migration Assistant doesnt seem to permit the granularity of restoring just one file. why the system hangs at 4.17GB of transfer? By the way, this happened with Snow Lion too. It didn't just start with Lion.

Apple on Tuesday afternoon pushed out another private beta of Mac OS X 10.6.3, asking its developer community to test font compatibility and stability alongside a handful of other components that have been in need of evaluation for the past several weeks.
Those other components include iCal, QuickTime and graphics drivers, according to people familiar with the beta software. The last private beta, distributed March 5th and labeled build 10D567, also listed those components as focus areas, in addition to Rosetta and third party printer drivers.
When it's released later this month, Mac OS X 10.6.3 will bundle an update to QuickTime X that improves security and compatibility while also enhancing overall reliability of the media software.
The Snow Leopard update will also include tweaks that enhance the performance of Apple's 64-bit Logic pro audio suite and deliver better compatibility with third-party printers and OpenGL-grounded applications.
Other fixes baked into the release target issues with mail messages displaying the incorrect background color and problems copying files to a shared Windows volume.

I think I have found a bug in Finder where I cannot copy large files from a bus powered USB external. I get this error:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "..." could not be read or written (Error code -36)"
I think I have eliminated hardware as an issue:
1. The problem is repeatable (and always happens) on my Intel Macbook Pro, Intel Mac Mini and G4 Mac Mini
2. The problem happens whether I have formatted the external as HFS+ or NTFS (I can't use FAT32 for files over 4GB, e.g. VMWare disk images)
3. I can copy the files off the external with my Windows Vista machine (mostly dormant these days) and an XP laptop (I use for work), using Explorer.
4. The same problem happens with two different external enclosures (An Xtatix Portadrive and a Beyond Micro mobile Disk). I have also tried 3 different 2.5" drives in these enclosures.
5. If I boot my Macbook Pro into Vista using Bootcamp, I CAN successfully copy the files using Explorer.
6. I CAN also copy the files OK if I use Terminal and the 'cp' command (it works for all 3 machines)
7. I have NO problems with large files and Finder if I use a powered external with 3.5" drives via USB or Firewire (HFS+ or NTFS) on any of the Macs.
As you see, I think I've been pretty thorough. It seems as though Finder must be at fault when used with a bus powered USB external.
I should also mention that all 3 of my Macs are on Leopard 10.5.3, though I did also boot a my Intel Mac Mini into Tiger with the same result (Finder failed, 'cp' worked).
I have reported the problem to Apple, but wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue...and hey, a solution would be a great bonus!
I recently picked up a USB Hard Disk, I plan on copying large files to it (for example 20gb VMs), I am wondering whether or not finder can copy files as large as 20gb one at a time because the last time I tried to do this on a USB Stick, the file transfer would either freeze or would end up taking way too long to transfer and in the end I had to pull it out and having to reformat it. DOes anyone here know if such things will happen again copying these files?

Is there a way I can set up the copy so that if it gets interrupted I can resume the transfer? At the moment the I just know X of 100 GB has been transferred. On the destination drive you can't see any of the files being transferred across until the entire operation is complete (on a pc you can normally see the files that have been transferred immediately) ... I'm a bit worried that if I turn my laptop off or I have any network issues the transfer will fail..

The issue comes if I try to connect a windows XP PC to my time capsule as a file server. I can connect one just fine if its on the local network, but I have been unable to do so for one remotely. Every indication I've seen online says that it should be possible to connect to via SMB, but I haven't been able to get it to work. Are there any specific settings that should be chosen either on the time capsule or on the PC to get it to work? Perhaps I'm not connecting to it via the PC correctly. Is connecting to it as a network drive at [URL] not correct? I've come across a few guides related to similar topics, but they all assume that the time capsule is just connected to your local network, and mine is also acting as my router.
does anyone know whether time capsule is able to serve as a file server, so that i can have access to my data when i'm away from home?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been using time capsule for only a few weeks and I have noticed that the file it has created "Elliot Newman's MacBook Pro_001b63936847.sparsebundle" only reads a file size of 95GB, when the disk I am backing up has 148GB used. Does this mean the backup doesn't contain all my files? I have to say it concerns me a little that the backup shows only a single file, is there anyway to see the files that time capsule has backed up? I am updating my MacBook soon with a bigger internal drive and I want to make sure all my files are backed up before I do this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently I bought WD6400AAKS hard drive. I made to partitions (1st for OS and applications, 2nd one for photo files). I also did fresh OS install and loaded basic applications. Strangely I didn't notice any speed boost while booting and to be honest I feel like all applications (photoshop for example) are also starting much slower than on original hdd. Is there any way to test hard drive if it performs as it should be? I also have 2 more older drives installed. is it possible that one of them would slow the system down?

View 6 Replies View Related1. Dual networking. You can run N on 5.0 ghz and at the same time run A/B/G whatever on 2.4 ghz for legacy devices such as the iPhone. No speed hit.
2. Easy to use guest mode which will open up one of the frequencies for use as a password less (optionally you can add a password) access to the net but locking off your computers, printer etc. on the other encrypted frequency. Great for having friends over and getting them on your network without having to open it up to attack or having to give out huge passwords for them to enter.
3. If you have MobileMe then the new Time Capsule FILE SHARES EVERYTHING OFF THE ENTIRE DRIVE TO THE NET!
