Windows On Mac :: Thinking About Switching To A New Imac?

Jan 18, 2010

A friend of mine currently runs CS4 on a 2GB Windows Vista PC and he is thinking about switching to a new Imac. He has never used Mac OS before and is a bit reluctant to ditch Windows completely. As far as I can see he has a few options, such as using Bootcamp or swapping his Windows version of CS4 for the Mac version.

But I saw a programme called Parallels Switch to Mac which is supposed to migrate his existing Windows set up onto a new Mac.This looks like a good compromise to me, but does anybody run CS4 using Parallels? If so, are there any known issues and does it run at a reasonable speed.

MacBook Pro :: Thinking Of The 2.66 Or 2.8GHz MBP?

Sep 29, 2009

I?m planning on purchasing a 15 inch MacBook Pro, my wife is a teacher so I?ll be purchasing it through the edu site. I was planning on getting the middle 2.66GHz model and upgrading to the 320GB 7200 rpm hard drive. But I see that I can get the 2.8GHz model with the 512 Vram and the same 320GB 7200 rpm hard drive for $160 more. I know for my needs I really don?t need the 2.8GHz, the 2.66GHz model will be fine for me. I was just wondering if it makes sense to spend the extra $160 for the possible extra resale value when I sell it, probably 3 years down the road. Does thinking in those terms make any sense?

Mac :: Way To Trick My MacBook Pro Into Thinking It's On Ethernet?

Jul 8, 2010

I have OnLive, which if you don't know what that means, take a nice read here. [URL]/Anyway, the gist is that you can play almost any game, playable on a mac or no, max settings from another host computer. My MacBook Pro can now play Crysis maximum settings, in OSx. So, to do this you need a minimum of 5mb/s and as you can see by my speed test result, I far exceed this. Here is my speedtest.net results.(yes this was a wifi test)Can I do something with the Terminal, or otherwise to get my MBP or at least OnLive to think I am on Ethernet and avoid this

OS X :: Switching From Windows To Mac?

Feb 8, 2010

I have little to no knowledge of the compatibility of the Macmini to a PC. I currently own a 4 yr old HP Pavilion. There's not much wrong with it, it's slowed a little, but my husband and I have been wanting a Mac. We saw the Mac mini and like what we see, but we don't want to have to buy a new printer and monitor when both work perfectly. The monitor is an HP vs15 and the printer is a HP Photosmart USB. Will these work if we buy the Mac mini?

MacBook Pro :: Graphics Switching In Windows?

Sep 7, 2010

The title is pretty simple, and self explanatory. Will the HD Graphics/330M combo, or the 9400M/9600M GT ever be able to switch back and forth in Windows? And regardless of if it's possible, what is the limitation, drivers, other software, or a physical hardware limitation? It would be a nice way to get more battery life out of Bootcamp.

Windows On Mac :: Switching From Parallels To VMware?

Aug 27, 2007

I am currently using Parallels and I've been fairly satisfied with it.

I have read a lot of good things about VMware and I'm thinking about changing.

My question is this - would I be able to simply 'point' VMware to my existing windows installation (the one that parallels is using)? Or would I have to do a fresh install and lose everything on the Windows side?

OS X :: Will Be Switching Over To A Mac Mini From A Windows Laptop

Jun 21, 2009

Ok, so the charger port on my computer eats up every charger that I plug into it. Instead of constantly taking my laptop apart and having to replace the DC jack every week or so , i want to buy a mac mini. The only problem is though that I do not know what the max resolution of the mac mini is. I am thinking of buying a monitor off of Newegg, and the mini from apple's website. I am going to be upgrading the $600 mini to max ram, keyboard and mouse, and max processor. So it is gonna be a 2.26 GHz mac mini that I will be using...

OS X :: Word Windows Randomly Switching?

My wife is having some issues with her new MacBook and MS Word...

While having multiple windows open she uses expose to switch between them. About 1/3 of the time she clicks on a window, it appears for 1/2 a second, then her original window appears. This makes it very difficult for her to navigate the windows she has open.

There have also been a few times where one word window appears over her current window.

Hardware :: Switching Between PS3 And IMac?

Nov 2, 2010

Im going to be getting a Samsung XL2370, but before I get it I wanted to ask this-

Can I connect it to my PS3 using the HDMI out, and use it as an external with my iMac using the DVI out, switching between them without disconnecting cables?

I was pretty dead set on doing this, because it seems like a pretty reasonable thing to assume a monitor can do, but was never really sure.

If the answer is no, can you recommend me a monitor with the same specs (response time, colors/contrast, and price), or tell me what I need to do to switch between the two without disconnecting everything.

IMac :: Making Loud Whir When Fast Switching Enabled

May 16, 2009

I was watching WWDC 2003(panther intro) this morning, and I only just learned about Fast Account Switching from it. So, right after watching, I went to system preferences and enabled fast switching. However, right after I did this, my iMac made an unusually loud whir, which I assumed was the hard drive loading some files, although I have never heard it do this before. After about a minute of hearing this, I assumed that something was wrong, and I quit all applications other than system preferences, and when it didn't stop, I disabled Fast Switch. The iMac quickly quieted down. After thinking about it, I realized that I only had 1GB of RAM in the machine, which may cause the system to use virtual memory. Would having 2GB or even 4GB make this not happen, or would I need more than that? I never have noticed the iMac lagging in other areas, but would RAM help in general tasks too?

IMac :: Black Smudges On Screen / Switching Between The Hard Drives?

Oct 26, 2009

I have had my iMac for about 4 months, i have been using it as my main desktop since. I have noticed black smudges, kinda like finger prints on the screen that would not go away after cleaning it with a damp cloth. I removed the glass panel and cleaned inside the glass and the problem still remained.

This is not the main issue, i can live it with. I have two iMacs with the same specs, one is in my main home office that i used most of the time while the other is my home that i use not that much. The smudges does annoy me when i watch movies a little bit but its not enough to get me to replace my mac. I was thinking since i used my office iMac more is it possible to switch the hard drives on them so that i get all the info from my office iMac onto my home iMac without complications?

Since i dont use the home iMac as much as the office one i can tolerate a few black smudges more and i would have an iMac in the office that looked new.If i switch the hard drives will it be as if i switch macs and if anyones knows how to fix the black smudges it would be a great help.

MacBook Pro :: Way To Trick Macbook Pro Into Thinking It Deteted A Display?

Dec 9, 2009

I have a Macbook Pro 4,1 and I am trying to connect it to an Insignia HDtv through the VGA port (I have a DVI to VGA adapter). It will detect it as the proper display when I use a short VGA cable with all the pins. But when I use my 15 ft long VGA cable that has 1 pin missing (i'm guessing that the pin is used for detecting displays) it detects is as a "VGA display". when i use the short cable in 1080p it takes up the whole screen as it is supposed to, but when I use the long cable it doesn't take up the whole screen.I connect my macbook pro to the HDtv using the short cable. Then I disconnect the VGA cable from the DVI adapter. Then I connect the long cable to the DVI adapter. problem solved.

Windows On Mac :: IMac I5 27" Windows 7 Bootcamp Display Port Out?

Jan 18, 2010

I have installed Windows 7 on a Bootcamp partition and use VM Fusion as well, I am trying to get my Windows 7 desktop onto my Plasma TV when I have only Windows 7 booted.

I have a mini displayport to DVI adapter (not worried about sound right now) but when boot into Windows I cannot find the TV as a output setting.

It used to be with my old PC I would see the TV as a possible output and I could chose either Dualscreens or simply set the Plasma as the main display.

Could someone please help me achieve this with my iMac? Am I missing a driver or just missing a setting?
