After initially installing win 7, and taking a few stabs at the correct driver for the wireless card in my mac pro (apple installed), i got wifi working with a public network.
HOWEVER, i installed windows updates, restarted, and now it's just not working again!
it says that there is not a valid ip address... my macs get on fine...
how to diagnose and fix? the win 7 dianostics do nothing.
Recently I acquired an Airport Extreme base station. I have 2 wifi networks because I am not on cable, it's an adsl service. At the moment the extreme is in bridge mode and its like the 2 networks are fused together, so the PC can access my mac's files and so on.
However, I want to be able to point to opendns' name servers inside my extremes settings, as opposed to individual computers, and wondered that if I got it to share a public ip address, would it bugger up my connectivity in any way? I'm too wuss to try it in case i can't connect.

I also have an old 12" powerbook.
I understand that I can have my new mac pro (Snow Leopard) sleeping, and have my powerbook hooked up to it with ethernet always on... and be able to wake up the mac pro through something called wake on lan?
How do I set this up? How do i set it up in both osx sl and xp pro?
I have a MacBook Pro that I use to stream my iToons Music to an Airport Express that I have plugged into an amplifier to power external speakers. Is there a way that I can plug a microphone with a USB connector into my MAC to use my system as a Public Address?

I am a comitted Mac switcher trying to put my lovely new MacBook onto the office Windows network. I can connect to the office wireless network (WEP key etc) and the little radar Icon in the menu bar lights up. However, I cannot get the MacBook to obtain an IP address via DHCP. I just keep getting the default self assigned address (169.....).
However, when I connect to the network via a cable using the built in ethernet connector, I get the DHCP address just fine and everything works OK.Also, if I assign an IP address manually to the wireless card (checking it is a free address!) it accepts the settings but I cannot network, not even a basic ping of another machine on the local internal network (all our internal machines are using 10.0.0.x addresses and 255.255.255.0 sub net)The DHCP server is not in the wirless router but is a Windows server machine.This is driving me crazy. I have called Apple care and they just dont want to know because there is a Windows machine in the mix. I expected better from them,
So i searched everywhere i could to try and find an answer to this question, because i imagine at least someone on this planet is having this same problem, but i haven't found anything. so here i am, asking you:
Originally i had bought a Time Capsule 1TB and connected it to my internet modem and used it to create a network, then i had a AirPort express that i used solely for AirTunes to my stereo. So i had wireless backup for my MBP, N-Speed wireless internet for computer and iPhone and wireless music in my room, it was awesome.
but i just moved into a condo downtown that we are subleasing. The owner told me it had wifi so that was a selling point for me. but heres my problem, currently i have my TC and AirTunes on one network, for music and backups, but there is no ethernet connection in my condo, so i cannot directly connect it to the internet, so for internet i connect to the public wifi, and have to switch every time i want music in the living room, or want to back up., and i cant do either at the same time as i connect to the internet.
and i cannot extend the wifi in the building since it is not N. so i followed the instructions to connect my TC and AirPort to my existing WiFi, and to my knowledge, they will both connect as clients and be accessible all through my buildings WiFi. But, when i take them off their own network and connect them to the public wifi they just disappear and i have no way of finding them ever again through AirPort Utility unless i reset them.
so i was very troubled with this and it bothered me for ages, and i was just using 2 separate networks, but then i realized that every time a new client connects to the building's wifi it goes to a page where you must click 'ACCEPT" to the terms of use before having access to the network, so on my MBP i can open safari and click accept, but my TC and AirPort cannot click accept.
is this my problem? what do i need to do? can i connect for the first time to the network through ethernet from my MBP to the TC and turn off my wireless card in my mbp then click accept in safari on my mbp? or can i connect my mbp to the wifi and reset my MAC or IP address to the same as my TC or AirPort then click accept, that way the TC's and AirPort's IP and/or MAC are registered on the network and they can continue to connect without being asked to accept the ToU?
I'm on a really slow internet connection when Im on my campus vs at home. My computer trying to backup Time Machine incessantly has been going on long enough. It slows things to a crawl: I need a solution. Is there a way to tell Time Machine to screw off trying to find my Time Capsule when I'm not at home? You'd think this would be a very simple thing to implement, but a google search and a search of the forums has turned up nothing.

I've searched everywhere and have one nagging issue. After I uninstalled Parallels I keep getting two Parallels Virtual Network Connections under Network in System Preferences. It happens every time I restart, I have to redeleate them. Has anyone had this problem after uninstalling Parallels?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI can not seem to sync my mac or enable "back to my mac" because I am being told that "I may have more than one device on my network providing Network Address Translation. Well, this is news to me. I have a Time capsule running my network and an Airport Express with Airtunes dvice and they have been hooked up for more than two years. I have been abloe to sync my network up until recently and I do not recall making any changes to any network configurations so I am clueless as to why things suddenly stopped working in this regard.
THe error message tells me to disable Network Address Translation on one of the devices but does not tell me how to do that. Nor can I find any information related to Network Address Translation on the help database.
Does anyone out there know how to do this?
When I try to connect to a wireless network. It says there is no IP address? I know nothing about computers. The mac shoppe told me I needed to erase everything and re-install my software. I did this, and it still doesn't work. I'm very frustrated because I lost everything when I did this!
When I connect directly to the modem, it works fine.
I have two laptops on the same network. When one of them is on, the other cannot get on because of this IP conflict, and vice versa. How do I change one of the IP addresses so I can get both laptops on the network at the same time? I'm looking to transfer music between two laptops and because they both can't connect to the network at the same time (Mac and PC), I can't transfer the files.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running snow leopard on Macbook Pro. My college has free internet access and every hostel has different IP addresses assigned. My hostel has this IP address 10.165.x.x. The students keep changing their IP address and somehow my macbook pro disables me from accessing the internet when a windows OS user in the network uses the same as mine. Somehow windows OS doesn't allow the second user to use if its already taken but my poor mac OS allows it even while m using and I'll be thrown out. I'll have to look out for a new ip address which is not taken already. How I can protect my own IP address?

a macbook air and an iMac have both give the error "Another device on the network is using your IP address". They are both using the latest OSX and are both set to use DHCP assigned by my Virgin cable router.the address reported in the popup window is NOT the address that either computer was assigned at the time (the first time, I thought it was odd, and I had an iPad handy and used fing to search my network to see what device had just used that address and I didn't see anything). This time - I was on my iMac and happen to have a terminal open, so I did a quick if config - and my ip address was not the one indicated in the message (it was saying 192.168.0.8) and my address was 192.168.0.12. In fact I think that the other day it was complaining about the same .0.8 address.
I do have 2 devices that have a hard coded ip-address (but they are right at the beginning of the range, and in fact I have instructed the router to skip those addresses and just dish out ip's from .0.3 onwards). All other devices use DHCP.

View 11 Replies View RelatedWhere I work there is a "free, pubic" wireless network. I can access it with my PB G4, and it will show two or three bars of connection. But, I'm informed that my computer is not connected to the internet and when I check the Network control panel I'm it shows that my PB has a self assigned IP address. Meanwhile, someone with a Windows laptop sitting right next to me can connect without issue.

my setup is as follows: netgear router/modem which handles PPPoE connected via ethernet to time capsule which handles the wireless network.
time capsule is working fine and has a valid IP address but airport express doesn't.
i have checked 'allow this network to be extended' on the TC, and connection sharing is in bridge mode.
i wonder if someone could help me troubleshoot this
Network Section in Finder shows "nstest.tzo.com". I've never used any service at this address or installed any questionable programs. Has anyone ever seen this sort of thing appear in their networks or know could I get rid of it? Spotlight search shows nothing except the google searches I did once I saw the entry.

My new macbook has never been connected to the internet as I can not find the IP address I have tried applications/utlities/network utility and there is just a blank space where it says IP address. I have also tried System prefences/network and there is no IP address there either.

Now when I try printing again through either textedt or another program all I get is this message: "Network host 'XXX.XXX.X.XXX' is busy; will retry in 5 seconds". View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Windows vista using going through parallels because my bootcamp failed a while ago. This partition also acts as my bootcamp. Well The internet on parallels works fine because it is using osx network, but when i boot into bootcamp the network drivers seem to be missing. I cant figure it out, but it says the ethernet and network drivers are not there. I cant find the drivers on the internet anywhere and when i use the vista disk i have it still does not want to install them.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just ordered a Mac for work, which I'll be adding to a PC-based network all running under Windows Small Business Server. I know I can add the Mac ok, but I just wondered what will happen when I then add Parallels. If the Mac is properly set up and attached to a domain, will the "Virtual Windows" machine by definition be part of the same network and work ok, or is it better to think of the virtual machine as a completely new entity in the network?
Perhaps it'll all become blindingly obvious when I start, but I just wondered if there was anything I need to know so I go into this with my admittedly non-techie eyes open!

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup an XP virtual machine with its own IP address on the iMac so I can remote into it from my laptop. I have tried both VMWare Fusion and Parallels to do this. But the VM only sees the network in Shared mode (called Bridged mode in VMWare). But in that mode, the VM gets a random IP address not in the same subdomain as my local network.
When I change the networking mode to Bridged (called NAT in VMWare) the VM gets an IP in the correct sub domain (192.168.0.xxx) and it gets the auto configured Gateway (192.168.0.1) and DNS Server (192.168.0.1) but I can't see any machines on the network. I can't even ping the router (192.168.0.1). The only thing I can see (Ping) is the host iMac (192.168.0.3). But I can't see any other machines or connect to the internet.
I am getting identical behavior in both Parallels and VMWare fusion which makes me think I am doing something wrong.
I am trying to make a PPTP VPN connection to a Windows server. This connection used to work, but I changed my router DHCP address. Now when I make a VPN connection (and it does connect), the IP address (under System Preferences, Network, VPN) shows 192.168.210.104. This is an address in the old router's DHCP configuration. The new configuration should be a 192.168.200.x address. My Ethernet (and Airport) IP addresses are in the new range - 192.168.200.x. How do I force my PPTP configuration to 'forget' the old address and use the new one? I've deleted the PPTP configuration and created a new one

Here is the situation
We are organizing our static ip address list.
For open spots, we are moving people with higher addresses up into the new addresses to fill in gaps.
Did a physical check of all addresses being used.
Ping open addresses, nothing comes back.
Go to change a computers address to that open spot, and it says it is already in use.
Question---Is there a way to boot that ip address out, since it is not being used, and give the address to the computer we want to use it?
