OS X :: How To Protect IP Address In College Network
Apr 1, 2010
I'm running snow leopard on Macbook Pro. My college has free internet access and every hostel has different IP addresses assigned. My hostel has this IP address 10.165.x.x. The students keep changing their IP address and somehow my macbook pro disables me from accessing the internet when a windows OS user in the network uses the same as mine. Somehow windows OS doesn't allow the second user to use if its already taken but my poor mac OS allows it even while m using and I'll be thrown out. I'll have to look out for a new ip address which is not taken already. How I can protect my own IP address?

The college I attend has a wireless network available to students. You don't need a key or anything to join the network, but once you're connected, you need to open a browser that automatically directs you to a website where once you log in, you are granted internet access. Similar to what you get a Starbucks, hotels, airports, etc. This used to work fine, but recently I have had nothing but trouble with it.
I can connect to the network fine, but when I open the browser I cannot get to the page where I need to log in--nothing ever loads and the browser eventually times out. I have tried resetting Safari, using Firefox, turned off pop-up blockers, renewed my DHCP lease, and nothing seems to do anything. I should add that I can complete this process with no issues on my iPhone. Also, I get the same result with 2 different MBP's. Both run Snow Leopard.

I'm moving into a house with 4 friends and we need to setup a home network which I am in charge of. 2 people have Macs and 3 have Windows. I want a central hard drive that everyone can throw their music and videos on to share. We also want wireless N. I was wondering if a Time capsule would be a good way and a good value or what the best way to set this up would be.

I can not seem to sync my mac or enable "back to my mac" because I am being told that "I may have more than one device on my network providing Network Address Translation. Well, this is news to me. I have a Time capsule running my network and an Airport Express with Airtunes dvice and they have been hooked up for more than two years. I have been abloe to sync my network up until recently and I do not recall making any changes to any network configurations so I am clueless as to why things suddenly stopped working in this regard.
THe error message tells me to disable Network Address Translation on one of the devices but does not tell me how to do that. Nor can I find any information related to Network Address Translation on the help database.
Does anyone out there know how to do this?

When I try to connect to a wireless network. It says there is no IP address? I know nothing about computers. The mac shoppe told me I needed to erase everything and re-install my software. I did this, and it still doesn't work. I'm very frustrated because I lost everything when I did this!
When I connect directly to the modem, it works fine.

I have two laptops on the same network. When one of them is on, the other cannot get on because of this IP conflict, and vice versa. How do I change one of the IP addresses so I can get both laptops on the network at the same time? I'm looking to transfer music between two laptops and because they both can't connect to the network at the same time (Mac and PC), I can't transfer the files.

I used to know a command that would show all of the ip address and the name of the devices on your network. I have not use the command in a while and I forgot it.

I just secured the wireless router and network for my roommate the other day. When I got back in town today and tried connecting to the internet, it told me that another device on the network is using your computer's IP address. I have no idea what this means and what I have to do to fix it... any thoughts?

a macbook air and an iMac have both give the error "Another device on the network is using your IP address". They are both using the latest OSX and are both set to use DHCP assigned by my Virgin cable router.the address reported in the popup window is NOT the address that either computer was assigned at the time (the first time, I thought it was odd, and I had an iPad handy and used fing to search my network to see what device had just used that address and I didn't see anything). This time - I was on my iMac and happen to have a terminal open, so I did a quick if config - and my ip address was not the one indicated in the message (it was saying 192.168.0.8) and my address was 192.168.0.12. In fact I think that the other day it was complaining about the same .0.8 address.
I do have 2 devices that have a hard coded ip-address (but they are right at the beginning of the range, and in fact I have instructed the router to skip those addresses and just dish out ip's from .0.3 onwards). All other devices use DHCP.
Info:
iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Can any one tell me how to determine the IP address of a network printer. I have an OKIpage 12i which suddenly can't be seen via Appletalk, so I was going to try to connect to it using IP (which is how I connect to the Xerox Phaser we also have)

Where I work there is a "free, pubic" wireless network. I can access it with my PB G4, and it will show two or three bars of connection. But, I'm informed that my computer is not connected to the internet and when I check the Network control panel I'm it shows that my PB has a self assigned IP address. Meanwhile, someone with a Windows laptop sitting right next to me can connect without issue.

i am trying to extend a network with an airport express but the airport express cannot get a valid IP address and flashes amber.
my setup is as follows: netgear router/modem which handles PPPoE connected via ethernet to time capsule which handles the wireless network.
time capsule is working fine and has a valid IP address but airport express doesn't.
i have checked 'allow this network to be extended' on the TC, and connection sharing is in bridge mode.
i wonder if someone could help me troubleshoot this

Network Section in Finder shows "nstest.tzo.com". I've never used any service at this address or installed any questionable programs. Has anyone ever seen this sort of thing appear in their networks or know could I get rid of it? Spotlight search shows nothing except the google searches I did once I saw the entry.

I have just bought a macbook, my internet connection at home is wireless however it requires the IP address of each computer using the wireless network to be entered into my wireless account, just an extra security measure. My new macbook has never been connected to the internet as I can not find the IP address I have tried applications/utlities/network utility and there is just a blank space where it says IP address. I have also tried System prefences/network and there is no IP address there either.

I am a comitted Mac switcher trying to put my lovely new MacBook onto the office Windows network. I can connect to the office wireless network (WEP key etc) and the little radar Icon in the menu bar lights up. However, I cannot get the MacBook to obtain an IP address via DHCP. I just keep getting the default self assigned address (169.....).
However, when I connect to the network via a cable using the built in ethernet connector, I get the DHCP address just fine and everything works OK.Also, if I assign an IP address manually to the wireless card (checking it is a free address!) it accepts the settings but I cannot network, not even a basic ping of another machine on the local internal network (all our internal machines are using 10.0.0.x addresses and 255.255.255.0 sub net)The DHCP server is not in the wirless router but is a Windows server machine. This is driving me crazy. I have called Apple care and they just dont want to know because there is a Windows machine in the mix. I expected better from them,

I tried installing my fujistu printer through IP address, which was successful. I tied printing the first time through textedit and it worked perfectly. Now when I try printing again through either textedt or another program all I get is this message: "Network host 'XXX.XXX.X.XXX' is busy; will retry in 5 seconds". The amount of time keeps increasing.

We have been a Mac family for a little over 2 years. We have 2 iMacs and one MBP (eldest dd's). We are ready to buy another MBP for our next child who is heading off to college. In this day of trying to pinch every penny, I am wondering if it is ok to buy #1, or do we not worry about another $250 and get #2.
He is going to study journalism/broadcasting---I know the field of study can make a difference on what to get.

so I've been looking to purchase a new laptop for a while now, and have decided that a mac would be the best choice. However, I'm having a problem deciding between the macbook or the macbook pro and what configurations would be best. Aside from writing essays, spreadsheets and presentations, I'd primarily use my laptop for internet surfing and instant messaging. I have a ton of music and photos and will be doing light photo editing. I already have a 200gb external hard drive so I shouldn't be needing any extra space. I also tend to run a lot of programs at the same time. Which mac and which configuration makes most sense for me?

I'm trying to find the best software to use to take notes in college. I've searched google but I couldn't neccesarily find one that allows me to download PDF lecture slides and to be able to edit them and write notes on them. Anyone have any suggestions on what application can accomplish this? I've heard that Evernote, Devonthink, Omnioutliner etc are good but I'm not sure if they allow you to edit PDF lectures slide files as if a word document lecture file would allow. example--I currently use word to take notes in class but my professor puts up PDF files of lectures slides (the ones that have 3 slides on a page along with lines next to the slides) so I was looking for a way to just write on those lines next to the slides(on the pdf file) instead of opening up word to write whats on the slide plus my extra clarification/ notes.

I've decided I'm going to get a MacBook Air for college, but I want to make sure it's the best possible for my four years as an undergraduate so I don't have to get a new one over this time period. For the processor: how much of a speed difference will there be between the i5 and i7? I'm thinking the i7 will be a better choice, but I really don't know what the difference will be. For RAM: 4gb should be plenty for four years, right? Right now I have a late 2008 aluminum MacBook with only 2gb of RAM and only recently did I notice it to start getting slow. Storage: My biggest concern. Will 256gb last me four years? I will be bringing an external hard drive, but I plan on only really using that for Time Machine backups and storage for photos. Should I make the jump to 512gb?

My college blocks iTunes sharing over their network. What solutions can you think of that would enable me and my dorm-mates to have a networked iTunes library that everyone can use (upload, download, browse) from any computer. I'm thinking of networking a mac mini and using it just for iTunes sharing. If iTunes won't work, can you think of any media sharing alternatives? Not file sharing.

So those campuses running Cisco Clean Access Agent for their wi-fi access and having many freshman coming to class with OS 10.6. What are you doing to let these Macs on the network? The College I am at, Clean Access Agent 4.1.3.1 runs fine on OS 10.6, I just get an error when I try to login and it says "Clean Access Agent is having a problem contacting the server, the operating system is not supported."
Funny 10.5.8 fixed all the airport issues with Cisco networks. Now 10.6 is just not a supported OS, the application works in 10.6. So is it just an update that needs applied to the network or can they just allow 10.6 to connect and deem it an acceptable OS? What are some college campuses doing with this wi-fi application and Snow Leopard?

I am studying for a year in South Africa and using internet behind a college proxy. Beyond the annoyances of only having 300 MB/month of internet, I am especially frustrated because I can't use skype, ichat, or google talk to stay in touch with people back home. I've tried everything; With skype, i downloaded authoxy, which corrects for the fact that skype takes its proxy settings from the network settings (I'm not a computer expert so I may have that wrong, but regardless, I followed the directions and tinkered with it some more and it failed). Then I downloaded the beta version of the latest skype, per customer support directions, and still no luck--i can't even sign on.
The same goes for iChat. Even google talk, which operates within the browser, will only allow text chat. When I try voice or video, it fails. None of this happens to students with a pc.

I'll be starting college this fall. I'm not a major gamer. The extent of my gaming is The Sims series. I also enjoy a good free online flash game here and there. I love surfing YouTube, using iTunes, uploading my photos to iPhoto, using Skype, etc. Basic computer tasks. Now that I'm heading off to school, I'm ready to switch computers. I've had a MacBook Pro my last four years of high school (the Core Duo model). It has been a tried and true workhorse. I rarely moved it around, though when I had to, it was a cumbersome addition to my ever-growing book bag.Am I a fool for truly considering the air? An iPad isn't going to cut if for college (I don't want an iPad and a Mac laptop) and would love something ultra-portable that's easy to pull out on the desk and have another piece of paper to the side. I don't mind using Bootcamp for virtualization.
Are there still quality issues with the Air like the revision A? I wouldn't touch one of those with a 5-foot stick. It's been a long time since I played around with one. The lack of CD-drive does not bother me at all. Basically, I want a reliable machine (e price-point of the Air is fine) that doesn't stutter on YouTube, will last my 4 years of college surfing the web and doing Microsoft Office apps like my MacBook Pro Core Duo has, and is an overall portable machine. I envision taking this machine across the globe with me. Yes, I have big dreams.
