I have a new ProMac, and I cannot open mail attachments from my PCfriends that are sent Mime type, or something called powerpoint.What do I need to do, to be able to open these?

So far I have only found out how to change this setting for a single file (e.g. opening a wmv file with VLC instead of Quicktime via "Open with" ) but I've yet to find the place where I can change this setting globally.

I have a question about listening to music online with my sirius satellite radio acct. The page "SIRIUS Player - 100% Commercial-free Music" has content of MIME type "application/x-mplayer2", but you don't have a plug-in installed for this MIME type. Once I have opened the page, it asks me to download it, which I have done, both actually, the "components for the quicktime" and the "wmp version 9". Neither work.

Because you don�t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content can�t be displayed."
I downloaded the flip4mac WMV to see if that would help and there's still no change. I then went into system preferences, under quicktime and in the advanced setting I made sure that streaming, video, audio, MPEG, MP3, and miscellaneous were all checked and enabled (this being under MIME settings). Still I'm not able to preview the ringback audio on alltel's website. Is there something else that I may not be doing right?

I get these WMV files from time-to-time from a friend and I cannot open them. I took sometime and browsed around on the Web and found some great information plenty going on about how wonderful they are on PC"s but very little with regard to converting and or opening and playing these Windows based files in the OSX environment. Any suggestions on a viewer or converter that I can use with my iMAC, that runs transparent? And, that doesn't take an instrument rating to install and run.

Everytime I've opened an Excel (Microsoft for Mac 2011) file today it opens as read-only, and the only way I can save changes is by changing the name of the file, which I don't want to do. I did not have this problem last week when working with the same file. I hit command-I -- I'm listed as read & write and then it said Staff (it's just me -- read-only) -- I just switched it to read & write& did the same for Everyone. Yet it still opened (from the Finder) as Read-Only. P

The drive in my G5 tower will read/write commercial or blank CDs and will read/write blank DVDs, however, it will not read most commercial DVDs. When I insert them it tries to read it then after a few seconds it just spits them back out. Occasionally commercial DVDs will read and mount fine, but this seems to be rare.

I just switched from Snow leopard to Lion and i don't like the way that Lion has the mail preview set up as a 3 column vertical format. I thought in Snow Leopard you could change the set-up so it's either horizontal or vertical, but I can't seem to find that option in Lion. I want to have the list of my email messages in the top, horizontal window and the preview of the selected message in a horizontal window below. Am I missing this option to change the view format from vertical to horizontal somewhere?
