Need help on why Macbook pro 13" 2012 cannot read USB flash drive and CD's(attachment from purchased books). Though these are easily read by PC.
View 1 RepliesI just tried to make the switch from Entourage to Mail, but there is a major bug in Mail's handling of rules that has sent me running back to Entourage.
Mail will NOT apply any rules to messages that appear in your inbox, if you've already read those messages on other devices, such as your iPhone.
If you?ve already read an email on another device (such as your iPhone), then Mail will NOT apply ANY incoming rules to that message when it shows up in your inbox. Every other email program on the planet that I know of ? including Entourage and Outlook ? ALWAYS applies rules to messages that appear in your inbox, whether or not you?ve read those messages on other devices.
I really wish that Apple would fix this bug.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to workaround this in the meantime?
I am using OSX Mail and a me.com address, via O2 broadband in the UK. About once a day, Mail, apparenty randomly, reloads dozens of recently read and deleted messages. So, just now for example, I appear to have 68 new messages, and it's all stuff I've dealt with already, some of it is in the InBox and some is filed in other Mailboxes - doesn't seem to make any difference. So now I'm getting duplicates and probably throwing out items I meant to keep.Â
This is just happening on my desktop iMac and is not replicated on my iPhone or Macbook Air. It feels as if the sync between the iMac and iCloud is somehow corrupting, if that's possible.Â
This has been going on for a few weeks and so isn't getting better on its own (as I have read in other postings). It also doesn't seem to be linked to any other event. The iMac is on all the time, either in use or asleep, and maybe gets restarted once a week.Â
I am wary of deleting things from the Library in case I either lose ALL my mail or it decides to replicate every message in the archive.Â

The drive in my G5 tower will read/write commercial or blank CDs and will read/write blank DVDs, however, it will not read most commercial DVDs. When I insert them it tries to read it then after a few seconds it just spits them back out. Occasionally commercial DVDs will read and mount fine, but this seems to be rare.

I just switched from Snow leopard to Lion and i don't like the way that Lion has the mail preview set up as a 3 column vertical format. I thought in Snow Leopard you could change the set-up so it's either horizontal or vertical, but I can't seem to find that option in Lion. I want to have the list of my email messages in the top, horizontal window and the preview of the selected message in a horizontal window below. Am I missing this option to change the view format from vertical to horizontal somewhere?

View 17 Replies View RelatedTried zapping PRAM and resetting SMC. 3 different cards, 3 different readers with same non-read. Same readers are OK with SD. All 3 readers with all 3 cards read ok on PC. 1 out of 10 times Disk Util sees it, but can't repair. Tried to reformat with Disk Util - 'can't write last block'.

I know this is lame, but I searched and can't find a solution. When I click on a day in ical it says it is a Read-only calendar. I repaired permissions, but it still says read only. The strange part is, in the Get Info screen, it says Read-Write for all the users.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm buying an external hard drive to use as a backup for my MacBook but also as a network drive that all the computers connected to my router (Airport Extreme) can use. There are two MacBooks and two PCs that connect to the network. I only need my MacBook to be able to write to the hard drive but I need the two PCs to be able to access and use the files on the hard drive. I was going to get a 1TB external and give it two partitions. The first partition is going to be the Time Machine backup for my MacBook and the other will be accessed by all computers on the network. What format will the second partition need to be so that both MacBooks and both PCs can view and use the files? Also what external hard drive would you recommend?

I use Paragon HFS+ for Windows which allows me to read and write to my HFS formatted drives. It works great for any external hard drive I use but when I use a flash drive it doesn't work. I format both my external hard drives and flash drives the same way, I use Disk Utility, I format them using Mac Extended Journaled and GUID partition scheme. When plugging in my flashdrive, my Windows 7 PC will not mount them. Disk Manager shows 3 partitions: EFI, Fat32 and some empty space. If I format my flash drives using the Master Boot Record partition scheme they work great.
So, here's what I have so far: External hard drives work fine when formatted with the GUID Partition scheme. (Mac extended journaled) Hard drives also show 3 partitions in Windows Disk Manager: EFI, HFS and empty spaceFlashdrives show 3 partitions but oddly enough the second partition shows as FAT32. But is completely unusable in Windows 7 Flash drives have to be formatted using the Master Boot Record partition scheme when formatting them as HFS+ volumes in order to work on Windows 7Windows 7 supports GUID partition schemes.
What is causing my Macbook Pro to treat an external hard drive differently then a flash drive when formatting them? Experience and common sense tells me that it shouldn't matter whether it's a flash drive or spindle drive, both should format the same. Granted, I could simply use exFat or FAT32 on my flash drives for cross platform compatibility however I prefer to use HFS+ when possible.

This is a rather bizarre issue and I will try to explain the best I can. First off, I did a search, and found nothing recent that could help me with this issue.

there my mac for some time has not been able to play dvds. It will attempt to read them, but then just spit it out after some time, if I try a bunch of times 6-8, I can sometimes get it to work, however, this rarely does.

It Wont read them, just makes a strange noise, Im guessing searching for it, and then either stops, ejects itself, or posts a error saying it isn't readable.
From the tech speck it should be, they are CD-R. I have put in and burnt lots of DVD's etc so there is no problem with that.
I have a late 2008 macbook pro 15 in.. my cd drive stopped working.. where can I find a new replacement one.Also, one of my usb drives (the one closest to me) gets power but it never picks up my iphone any more.. is there a way to reformat it?

First, my MacBook is a little more than a year old and is no longer covered under warranty, so I would like to try any possible fixes (like cleaning the drive) before having to buy a new drive. Here's my problem: when I put a CD or DVD into the drive, it spins around and clicks a lot but never seems to really catch, and after about a minute or so of this, it ejects itself. It never shows up on my desktop, so the computer is unable to read anything from the CD or DVD. I know the problem is not the CD or DVD, because I've tried the same discs on other machines and they work fine. This problem came up on me gradually. It started happening a few months ago, and maybe only 1 out of 10 or 20 discs would it do this. Then it became a third of the time, then half of the time, and now it's about 99% of the time I try to insert a disc. I was able to get one disc to work a few days ago, but when I ejected it and reinserted it, it didn't work the second time.

On my macbook pro laptop, I can only read. It will not let me write or erase anything to the drive. Does this have to do with the drives formatting? View 4 Replies View RelatedI have the early 2006 17" first intel Macbook pro , My DVD drive stopped reading any Drive i put into , I've noticed that a couple of weeks back, but it would read them after a while.
Today I've tried installing SL on it and the drive keeps on spinning and spinning and the it would be ejected out , I've tried several times to no avail , tried switching users and it read the install DVD, pressed on install and it started installing , it required rebooting when the computer rebooted it stopped reading the drive!
Tried remote disk method to no avail, it cannot read other disk drives on the same network while the other computers read its drive, I've made sure that the share DVD option from the sharing pane in system preferences was enabled on both machines...
So I have an external drive that I want to be able to copy some files to. I use it for my Windows PC, and i have some of it set up for time machine too. When I plug it in, Documents, Pictures stuff show up. I can drag files off onto OS X but I cant drop other files on it. It says I only have READ permissions. How do I change this? Fully updated OS X SL.

i just bought a mac mini and everything seems to be running great. however, i plugged in a 2TB drive i used on my Windows 7 laptop and whenever i try to delete or add a file i get an error saying the drive is 'read only'. i've plugged in a USB thumb drive and this works fine. is there anything i can do?Â
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have an external Transcend HD, which has been working perfectly fine for around 5 months now. It is NTFS, and I use NTFS-3g and Macfuse. Been running fine. Was able to read and write. Suddenly I am only able to read though. I go into the "Get Info" pane and the option to choose whether I want to read and write, or read only is gone, and all that it says is "You can read only". getting this back to read and write is really appreciated. I really need this disk.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just got hit with a double whammy. :Imac running Panther did something odd to the it's external drive. That was formatted fat 32. I plan to see if anyone in the nearby computer repair class can recover those files, but in the meantime (days!) the gremlin also hit the macbook, putting it in range of a spill. So now the only backups I have are on the second external drive formatted with a mac format on the macbook. This one was done with 2 partitions, one for Time Machine, one for the stuff I was yanking over from the other hard drive.
So now I find that Imac can't even SEE the second drive. (Not that I expected it to see or recognize Time Machine, just the other part.) My macbook is on downtime until it gets checkup/cleaning (with all mac places nearby apparently closed thru New Years and classes I need it for starting right after) Does anyone know a way to get "Ye Old Imac" to see the other drive? Is there a driver or something? I know it's very hard to find older software (most online sites don't go back past Tiger), but it is a mac format for goodness sake! I can't even be 100% sure if it's something to do with a newer mac format for the external drive or "Ye Old Imac" is just being grumpy. It seems to see the other USB stuff but it has been known to lose touch with them.
I have an external drive that is still formatted for OSX journaled and I need to read it on my XP system. I used macdrive in the past but the demo expired and it will not let me try it again. Is there any free software out there that will let me do this? I do not want to pay $50 for software I will only use once.
